It was an extremely welcoming four hour concert for both Gurucharan and for chennai's perennial 2 hours + concert crowd. The event was sponsored by Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha. Gurucharan started with a good vasantA varnam. The Kutcheri achieved an early excellence with the kAnadA krithi and an excellent swaram . My ignorance of mandAri made me think the rAga that was handled as Amrithavarshini and had shades of HamsanAdam . Nevertheless very well sung by Gurucharan

The swarajathi masterpiece was sung quite good , eventhough left me with a feeling that Bhairavi could have been better in the second half. Arabhi was quite good with a good round up of swarams . A rare dandapani desigar's rAgavinOdhini served as a good filler to give a lot of credibility for Gurucharan's repertoire. A very good alApana of NAsikabhooshani followed with an ok krithi.

NeelAmbari was good certainly could have added more alankAram that the rAga intrinsically possess. An excellent KeeravAni followed with a very good neraval in "bAguga shrI raghu rAmuni" and swaram. After a long Tani and nearly 3 hours , Gurucharan 's drop of KAnaVendAmo was brilliant and kept the audience glued.

RTP in KalyANi started little drowsy and stayed throughout drowsy in RAgam. TAnam was outstanding to me , he brought in fairly elaborate rAga Swaroopam of KalyAni. The pallavi line was too long and maybe that being the case the pallavi rendition of KalyAni was little repetitive in manodharmam . However the swarams were very good ,though SooryA following HindOlam was a surprise , bahudAri was excellent .

The KApi was quite good . His viruttam in BehAg was lovely and was in praise of Lord Shiva. As expected the popular GKB krithi was sung. darbAri kAnaDa bhajan was nice . Tillana at the end was the only noticeable dip of the concert .

VaradarAjan's Violin was average till the start of KeeraVAni. KeeravAni was excellent and he played kalyAni quite well . The concert was a success because of the playing of KV Prasad and Vaikom.Their Tani a bit too long was lovely. Overall the concert was very good and Sikkil Gurucharan never looked tired till the end(atleast to me).

Gurucharan is really the new star on the Carnatic music horizon. Excellent voice, good adherence to shruthi, superb control over kaalapramaanam, and a very unassuming and pleasant demeanour. The concert was a great success. I really enjoyed the tempo he set and I am happy that he chooses really quality accompanists like Shri Varadarajan. This helps in really upping the overall standard of the concert.

Sometime ago, I read a very interesting interview with him: his music has so many influences: firstly from his grandmother(s) (The Sikkil Sisters - obviously, one of them is his GM), then from Mala Chandrasekhar (who is his cousin), and then from Radha Viswanathan (his cousin Mala's MIL and of course, Smt MSS's daughter).....
Nice to see that he is doing well!

rshankar Sir,

In my opinion, Charan's mother, Mrs. Mythili Chandrashekar, also is a big infulence for him. She used to teach flute & vocal at Madras Music College at Kotturpuram/Adayar where Smt R Vedavalli was the Prinicipal. I'm Not sure if she continues to do that. His sister also has a great gnyanam. If I remember correctly, she also plays flute.

Also, Mrs. Mala Chandrashekar is his aunt (Mom's Step-Sister!), not his cousin. He doesn't have any cousin's in his mom's side!

I have heard Charan sing from almost 10-12 years ago (with 3-4 years of his concert career). He has come a long way. He has been blessed with a great voice. Kudos to him for including some rare songs and for performing for 4 hours.

rajeshnat Sir,

Was this concert for Sharvani Sangeetha Sabha?

Ksrimech,
I have already mentioned that the concert was sponsored by Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha in the concert. Can you elaborate little more in your question as it is not clear??? YOu don't have to suffix with a Sir in future.
