murugu - beauty/divinity; therefore, murugA, murugan denotes someone who is (divinely) beautiful/handsome.

He was called murugA because of his beauty.

Thanks Ravi - believe it or not, I am still trying to learn more songs in harikAmbhOji. This rAgA is really stuck in my mind since a few weeks... sheer bliss! :-)

BTW, Ravi - thanks to all your translations, I was able to successfully translate all the words in this song myself, except 'tiru ulAvum' which I was clueless about. That's a small but significant step for me. Thank you!

prashant,
talking of harikambhoji, I remember the raga alapanai of Shri Nedunuri Krishnamoorthy in CFAS a few years back-think it was the sangita kalanidhi series- whatever had to be in the raga was there- he left nothing unsaid(unsung)!Sheer Bliss, as you said!

Oh, what an AlApanA that was... let me see if I can dig it up and post it here. That was in February 2002 - a great three days of music. Back-to-back concerts of Sangita Kalanidhis Shri Nedunuri, Shri TNK and Smt. Vedavalli...
