I heard that Prince Sri Rama Varma funded the entire festival initially . Now it is conducted by' Sir Rama Varma Maharaja of Travancore Trust' which accepts donations(from those who don't interfere in the artists' selection) that are exempt under section 80G.

A poor selection of artists with the exception of two programs. Wish Mr. Rama Varma does it better the next time around. There are better artists in the circuit than******!

Also, why should a Sanjay perform every year- no opportunity for others - so many great singers around and also feel Rama Varma being the host, should give up his opportunity for the benefit of brilliant musicians and as well as the nice audience of Trivandrum who ought to experience other artists who are not part of their flock!

The nice people of Trivandrum plus the huge number of people who travel to Kuthiramalika, love their Prince no matter how many times they hear him. :) This is a function which is organised by Rama Varma and there is no doubt that he has been selecting veterans and upcoming musicians and encouraging good talent in all ways possible. We should leave it at that. After all as a Rasika, you have a right not to attend a concert which may not be to your liking.

Cienu is totally right. People like anote would only concentrate on something petty like this forgetting that it is Varmaji
who has virtually singlehandedly conducted this festival for ten years now and offered some mind blowing concerts to us listeners totally free of cost too. I can never forget some of the Ajoy Chakrabarty concerts I have heard there, not to mention junior and senior Malladi Brothers, Balamurali with Palghat Raghu, VVS as soloist and pakkam, Sanjay, Krishna, Nagaraj and Manjunath duets, Ponnammal many times. Since anote mentions Sanjay specifically, I know from my listening experience that Sanjay has given some of his best concerts at navarathri Mandapam and kuthiramalika and hundreds of people like me are eagerly awaiting January 6th. It would be interesting to see who the seven artists would be if anote
was doing the selection as well as financing this year.

Dear anote,

Just a little request. Some basic homework
1. Go to chennai and check out how much tickets cost to listen to some of the stalwarts Varmaji brings to Thiruvananthapuram every year.
2. Check out the halls and venues in which some of the most sublime musicians are forced to perform most of the time.
3. Now check out how many times Varmaji gives concerts in his home town

If you have done the above let us get down to facts

1. Concerts at Navarathri and Kuthiramalika are eagely awaited by rasikas not only in Trivandrum but all over Kerala. Thanks to Varmaji we get to hear some of the best Carnatic musicians in the best of venues - pristine and divine - without paying a penny.

2. Now the line-up of artists. Check out OUtlook , the magazine on December 14, 2009 ( page 65). They have written that HIndustani classical vocalist Pandit Venkatesh Kumar is one of the most gifted musicians in INdia. Thanks to Varmaji he has sung in trivandrum twice and now this year too. IN stead of running after so-called stars of Carnatic music, both Kuthiramalika and Navaratri feature musicians who do justice to music! Vidushi Parassala Ponnammal has been around for years. But until Varmaji brought her to Navaratri Mandapam, not even those in Trivandrum had heard much of her! The list of such gems who electrified the lucky audiences at Kuthiramalika and Navaratri Mandapam is very long.

3. Today there was a programme by Varmaji on Amrita TV. YOu should have heard veteran rasikas who were enthused by Varmaji's golden voice, crisp diction, choice of compositions and manner of presentation. He sings so rarely in TVM that his many many fans long to hear him sing more. His lecture-demonstrations are also much awaited for events.

So please anote, individuals may have their own likes and dislikes but to generalise is wrong! Eagerly waiting for the Kuthiramaliak concerts to listen to prisitine Carnatic music and Hindustani too.

thanks

Varmaji follows certain process in bringing artists; so your comment is based on not knowing the process.

I found this wonderful article in the Friday Review of 'The Hindu' yesterday. It enlightens the reader about the Swathi Sangeethotsavam, the history of the Kuthiramalika palace and Maharaja Swathi Thirunal's greatness as a composer and as a king apart from the proactive role played by Prince Rama Varma in ensuring that the concerts have some new compositions of Maharaja are sung every year. It was simply wonderful to read it.

@ anant

Although you are entitled to find the list 'boring' etc, I would request you to do some research before commenting about prince Varma performing every year. He performs every year, due to the huge number of requests he gets from listeners who come all the way from various places, apart from the Trivandrum audience that rarely gets to hear him perform. And I am sure it is most natural to oblige the majority than to a few people like you! Prince Varma brings some freshness into the Carnatic scene that is filled with boring 'improvisers' and artists who are photocopies of their gurus and even try to sing in the same pitch!!! And as for his selection of artists they are also people who are 'fresh' in the Carnatic scene and have something unique about their singing. It is so nice to find someone who is there encourage new talent as well as give due to veteran musicians like Parassala Ponnamal who would have never come out of the closet, since they do not know the 'trick' of the trade that one needs to possess more than the music itself, to become a 'famous' artiste!!! And, I must confess, that I would prefer hearing Prince Varma sing on all the days, than having him not sing at all! This is because he gives so much importance to each and every concert he gives and tries to make every rendition of his sound new by improvising in such a brilliant way that it is not surprising that I always feel I have not had enough! In short, he is a man who prefers quality to quantity and any rasika who has a similar taste will want to see him perform every year!
