It was a concert of simple, chaste music. The teacher-student, uncle-nephew duo of D. Balakrishna and Vamshidhar gave a very good veena-venu concert devoid of ostentation.

The main artistes, Shri. D. Balakrishna (son of Mysore V. Doreswamy Iyengar) and Shri. Vamshidhar (grandson of V. Desikachar who was the brother of Shri Doreswamy Iyengar) made an excellent duo. They complimented each other very well. Vamshidhar is a solo flautist of good merit himself.

The concert began with the popular navarAgamAlikA varnam of patnam subramanya iyer. A very brief outline of purvikalyani was next followed by mAnava janma doDDadu. The darbAr alapana that came next was a fast-paced one by Shri. D. Balakrishna. The kalpana swaras for darbar were played by both the artistes. A quick marugelarA was a filler between darbar and begada. The begada ragam was a sedate rendering by Vid. D. Balakrishna followed by sankari nIvE . Vamshidhar played an excellent abheri ragam for bhajare re manasa.

The next was a pristine and majestic kalyani for RTP in chatusra jaati triputa talam , 2 kalai. For me, tanam sounds best when rendered on the veena and this was proved once more in the excellent tanam played by Shri Balakrishna. There was also a ragamalika tanam played for a few minutes. This was followed by a very good thani by the percussion artists. Though I could not understand the intricacies of the tani, it was apparent that there were extremely mathematical calculations. Shri. Sudeendra appreciated the percussion artistes in his address that they played the sankeerna nadai, which is not very often played, excellently in their tani. parulanna mAta was rendered last at the request of Shri. Sudeendra.

The percussion artistes , Shri. Jayachandra Rao (disciple of Shri Palghat Rajamani) and Shri Omkar (disciple of Shri. T.A.S Mani) provided excellent support to the artistes. Their anticipation and accompaniment to the songs was very good.

It was nice to read your review. I was not aware of Sri. Vamshidhar's lineage.
Thanks for posting!
