Shri TN Krishnan - Violin
Smt Viji Krishnan - Violin
Shri Guruvayur Dorai - Mrudangam
Shri Vaikom Gopalakrishnan - Ghatam
Shri Srirangam Kannan - Morsing

Date : October 31, 2009
Venue : Narada Gana Sabha Main Hall

1) Viriboni - Bhairavi Ata Tala Varnam - O
2) Niravathi Sukha - Ravichandrika - S
3) Rama Nee Samana - Kharaharapriya - ANS
4) Enduku Peddala - Sankarabharanam - ANST
5) A song in Surutti
6) A song in Madhyamavathi? (Not sure)

It was a wonderful beginning to the Utsav (as Ramanathan later put it in his speech) with the Bhairavi Ata Tala Varnam - a personal favourite. It was played at leisure in all its majesty. A disconcerting occurrence that I can't help but quote. As soon as TNK finished the Mukthayi Swaram and was about to begin the Charanam, the audience started clapping. Now, this can prove to be rather unnerving for an artiste. This is the second time I've seen this happen in Madras, for extremely popular pieces. Sometime back, it was Shri Lokanatha Sarma's concert and the audience applauded even before he could start the Charanam for Vatapi ! People could atleast refrain from clapping if they are in doubt!! Such happenings right at the beginning of a concert could put an artiste off.

Ravichandrika was played at a fast pace. Both the Kharaharapriya and Sankarabharanam Alapanais were handled by the duo very well. Particularly liked the Neraval by TNK at Veda Shastra.

The percussionists gave admirable support. The Tani, led by the veteran Shri Dorai was very good.

I missed the concert unfortunately.

I was shocked to see his lone comment on Shri Dorai and his non-comment on Shri Gopalakrishnan and Shri Kannan.

SVK yet again manages to say nothing in many many words (just my opinion...). Ouch for Sri Dorai - "punitive slaps"!

Sathej, thanks for the review. TNK's enDukku pEDala in a Kerala concert on Sangeethapriya with R, Thanam, N, S, T is magnificent. The way he weaves in folkish senchuruTTi-ish phrases in the kalpanaswaras, his mandra sthayi playing in the raga alapanai are both noteworthy in that piece.

I could not understand the following para from SVK's review:

The way he wielded the gana-naya from his bow contained all the mesmerising touch. Nothing Krishnan played which was not marked by graciousness and unique ease of expression.

Seems like an editorial goof up to me :)

If you are referring to this..

>Nothing Krishnan played which was not marked by graciousness and unique ease of expression.

It is an awkwardly expressed double negative, its equivalent is ( ignoring the spurious 'which' )

Everything Krishnan played was marked by graciousness and unique ease of expression.

Probably if it was written as -'There was nothing that Krishnan played, which was not marked by graciousness and unique ease of expression,'- it would been easier to understand. :)

The 1st of the 2 sentences(?) also has a bad structure. And they don't seem to fit together. Then there is the "spurious which". Something tells me it has been badly transcribed.
