Please pass me the lyrics for Aadal Kaneero classical film song by Dr. MLV and in movie Madurai Veeran.
By listening i understand that there a few stories intertwined in the song on Lord Shiva.
Also i feel that the lyrics for this song maybe there in Rasikas but despite searching with various words am unable to retrive.

The angry king punishes his minister, only to be told in his dream of the true sequence of events. He releases the minister and seeks forgiveness
[6] Story of how a stork, who is a devotee of Siva comes to madurai, seeking release from the cycle of rebirths. He also is grieved that many of his kith and kin are committing the sin of killing another living being when they eat fish from the poTRAmarai kuLam - the pond of the golden lotus. Siva grants salvation to the stork, and decrees that there be no fish or other aquatic life in the poTRAmarai kuLam, so that the stork's kith and kin will no longer be able to commit the sin of killing another living creature

Ravi - I am going edit those lyrics I took off the net - using your text as guide - it is too beautiful a composition to be botched up in any way - your elaborate meaning is so wonderful to look forward to with all the footnotes....I am going to make myself a cup of pudina-ginger black tea, play the song and savor your translation slowly, between sips.....
Kannadasan was a genius - some of his compositions like KalangaLiL avaL vasantham...and many others......are just jewels, timeless tributes to woman and womanhood....life and its myriad dimensions....

Really very very wonderful stories. When i heard this song i was not able to comprehend the meaning and context of the stories. But now thanks to the explanation from rshankar it is very clear.
Somehow am not convinced that Kannadasan has written the lyrics for this song but whoever has penned it, it is a masterpeice composition weaving so many nice stories into a samll song.
Dr MLV has sung this song ever so wonderfully.
Will some of the other reader pl explain the stories not provided by rshankar.
Why these kind of dance pieces are not taken for elaboration in classical dance concerts. This song is not less than a krithi - is it ??

The two missing stories are these:
[8] During the reign of Anantha Guna Pandiyan, some Samana priests performed an evil Yagna from which a monster snake emerged and terrorized Madurai. The king with Shiva's blessings killed it, but its venom engulfed the city. Again the king sought refuge in Shiva who sprinkled some drops of nectar(Amritha) from the moon on his head. This restored the city.

Could # 7 be the dakSiNAmurti aspect of Siva, who explained the matter of the veda-s to munis while remaining silent..?
And #8 - One of the meanings of nAga in SanskRt is elephant (hence naga-swara for the indian trumpet) and if Tamil accepts this meaning, it could refer to Siva killing GajAsura, whose hide he later fashioned into a windcheater..!

This song has been in heavy rotation for me for the past year since this song got in an MLV mixed cd I made. It was easy to see the song is about the various thiruvilayadal stories but this level of detail is going to enhance the listening experience. Ravi, I agree it would be great to watch the video of the song. Please post if and whenever you happen to find it. I will also search.
Earlier this year we visited the AvuDayAr Koil and got the refresher on the mANikkaVachagar stories. Here is a sattelite view of AvuDayAr Koil. It is not that far from the sea.

Vasanthakokilam: The website for AvudyAr kOvil you have given takes one to ThanjAvUr temple. The AvudArkOvil is near Pudukkottai, I believe. I plan to visit the temple on my trip to India coming January 2010. The architecture there is said to be the best in India. How did you find the visit ? How did you get there?

Sundara Rajan, The left hand side may show Tanjore, but the satellite map should show avuDayAr kOil towards the left center edge with the ocean to the right. I just wanted to show that it is close to the ocean. You should be able to zoom out and see the nearby towns and roads
Aranthangi and Pudukkottai are the big towns nearby. We went by a car from Tanjore. Left Tanjore around 7 A.M. and reached there by around 10:30 A.M. I think they close the temple past noon.
Yes, the sculptural work is beyond description. There are just way too many things to observe in terms of rock work and also the murals in the ceilings. If you are deeply interested in all that, it is better to give yourself at least 4 hours.
On the religious side, the mANikkavAchagar is the utsava mUrthy. The priests who do the poojas for the main deity are different from those who do the same for the utsava mUrthy. They are supposed to come from the lineage of the people who were with the 'Guru' during the encounter with mANikkavAchagar.
The darshan at the amman sannidhi is not the usual one. you can only see through some small spaces in an otherwise closed door ( it is not even a door, it is more like a sattam on a window ). There is also something special about the neivedyam they prepare for Shiva. There are also some musical pillars.

Thank you VK for the useful information. I also read that there is no lingam in the sanctum sanctoram (main altar) but only a peetam and that the rays of setting sun fall directly in to the sanctum. It should be an intersting visit for me. Your picture and Neelakanta Sivan's pallavi are praiseworthy. Where else but in India could you see such a sight of a calf suckling, while organized dairy farms use milking machines never giving a chance for the cow to feed its own calf. This is also true of mothers breast feeding their infants except in rural India. I found Ranjani & Gayatri's rendering of the song enjoyable and emotive. I guess it is available in You tube.

If Kannadasan could have penned Ariyadhu Ariyadhu in Kandan Karunai - he could have penned this song too - no need for any doubts - his abilities far exceeded the beautiful lyrics he penned for use in films, if those songs are any indication of his genius.HarishankarK wrote: Somehow am not convinced that Kannadasan has written the lyrics for this song but whoever has penned it, it is a masterpeice composition weaving so many nice stories into a Tamll song............

Keerthi, most of the viLaiyADals in this purANam were conducted either in madurai itself or in the pANDiya dESam, His kingdom. So, I think Rajani's explanation with the snake and poison seem to make sense. I think that madurai is called hAlAsya puram - Sri Chandrasekhara Saraswati in his kAmAkshi suprabhAtam refers to the dEvi as 'tvam viSvanAthasya viSAla nEtra, hAlasya nAthasyanu mIna nEtra, EkAmranAthasyanu kAma nEtra, kAmESa jAyE kuru suprabhatam', and Sri Raghavan in the mInAkshi suprabhAtam says 'hAlasya nAtha iti hanta jagat prasiddhihi patyustavAstu yadi tasya tu nA bhavishyati'.
