VKV,
Atomic power! Your wealth in that area cannot be shared by 'brother, spare me a dime' folks like us. Yes, in trivial matters, 'spare me recent memory' does occur among some of us.

Nageswaran,
Very kind of you to host RasikAs Meet One of the season with such eminent folks! I look forward to spending as much time as I can at your place.

Well! I was expecting an hour or two get-together... and the planning of a major event is under way! :)

Thanking all in advance for their efforts --- can I request that the catering includes chai as well as coffee, or else, if I know, I can bring a flask.

Respected Arasi and other Rasikas,

Warm welcome to my residence. If VKV permits, you can listen to my Grand daughter singing the invocation song and if time permits, she can entertain you all with more songs during the lunch interval.

I was going to ask if we could have some live music! Could we set aside some time for this?

If not appropriate for the day under discussion, then perhaps another day --- and it's also time we had another jam session.

(Oh, and thanks for the assurances about the tea!)

Thank you, NAgeswaran. Look forward to your grand daughter's invocation.

Nick,
Though this means missing Parassala Ponnammal's concert at MA and listening to RKS with Ravi Kiran that morning, unlike last year, I can make it to at least one! The one I went to (?) was not there after all! Gopilalitha and his wife were there too, hoping to meet the rest.

I am much more addicted to my tea than she*! :D

Alas, I cannot drink coffee. Much as I love the flavour, it messes with my nervous system. I was a little fearful that, in a situation with considerable cultural input from Mylapore Brahmins and America that coffee might have been the exclusive drink of the day!

*we did once consider investing in a tea shop. I wish we had; it could not possibly have cost as as much as investing in shares did!

30.10.2009.
1) As those Rasikas who followed this thread know we have accepted the very kind & generous offer of Sri.S.Nageswaran & meet in HIS HOUSE on DEC 20TH SUNDAY 9:30 A.M. TO 4:30 P.M. 2) He will provide his Address, Phone Numbers etc in this FORUM.3) The ORIGINAL INTENTION was to discuss the illustrious careers & lives of M.S./T.S. While it will be a FOCUS of this get together it has been extended by requests to cover the two additional areas in particular: The Great
Musicans of the PAST and Carnatic Music in North America & the current leading happening there: Cleveland Aradhana Festival. These three aspects have been chosen because of the need to have a Focussed Discussion as well as the expertise of the panel members chosen. The choice was made by three persons: S.Nageswaran, M.K.Ramasubramanian, & Dr.V.K.Viswanathan(vkv in this forum). We can have further such Forums if others take the initiative.
I will write on behalf of the three of us. I request ALL OF YOU to write your reactions& suggestions so we can make it worthwhile& cover your particular interests as much as possible.
Also because of my lack of EXPERTISE I will break this into several POSTS here. The second post will give the SCHEDULE the three of us have agreed upon. Unfortunately we have to stick to this schedule but what happens within each time period we can discuss & hopefully come up with the best use of time to make it worthwhile. The next post will give the schedule....VKV My email is [email protected] US Phone: 505-6612618; After dec 4th Chennai Cell #: 9566124075

VKV Sir
You are creating a schedule of 'apollo mission to westmambalam' , where you are spearheading with your introduction. Your proactive MC role is welcome and very inspiring(like your mmi celebrations last year at ragasudha) , as in general when more and more people meet and talk ,this agenda will break silos of communication.

Nageshwaran Sir
I will very likely come on that day , only problem is my customer is coming to meet us in our workplace . I may run into few last minute errands. Hope you can invite Shri MSG and shri ramani too

I would appreciate INPUT on what the desireable proportion between technical expertise & Human expertise based on dealing on a human basis shd. be. VKV PL submit what you like discussed/answered & hope you can show up at least part of the time

Dear Rasikas,

As a host for the get together meeting, I would like to know the No. of Rasikas who are definitely attending the meeting on 22.12.2009 for arranging the catering facilities.

Hence I request the Rasikas to confirm the participation for the meeting including the NRIs individually.

NRI Rasikas can also inform their arrival and departure dates [To possibly have another meeting with some of the musicians available for an interactive session with them].

VKV/Nageswaran: I can understand the forumites desire to make it into a symposium-like affair.I look upon his as a pure exchange of experiences/ideas AMONGST Rasikas-I did not envisage Musicians' participation at this juncture(Not that I have anything against inviting artists--but the presence of VKV/Cleveland Sundaram--both very much sought after by artists because of their longstanding patronage of artists in NA--might generate a "stampede" and clamour to attend the event(perhaps I am being delusional about the Rasikas' might!!).Personally let's confine the event to the rasikas-besides Dec 20 is smack in the middle of the season and artists might be too busy and may not show up at all.

Also let's not forget the host's concerns-Nageswaran needs to know how many would attend. Amongst the rasikas we can get a fair idea about attendance ,but we cannot be sure of the artists and this uncertainty might put an unnecessary burden on the host.

If the majority feels differently I have no problem going along!!!

I AGREE WITH BOTH WHAT S.N.& M.K.R. HAVE EXPRESSED. MY VIEW IS THIS IS A MEETING OF NON-PROFESSIONAL RASIKAS & WE SHD. KEEP IT THAT WAY. If by their own intentions some professional musicians show up they would be like every one else attending the meet & not given ANY SPECIAL STATUS etc. Also we should not officially invite musicians for this meeting. As it is the already invited persons have MORE THAN ENOUGH TO COVER. VKV

Respected, VKV, and MRK and Rasikas,

With the initial feedback from few of the Rasikas for the get together meeting, there is request for inviting some musicians also for our meeting.

In my opinion, the first get together should be restricted only for the Rasikas where in we can freely discuss our points.

If further requests are forthcoming from the Rasikas, we may consider having second interactive sessions with the available musicians. This meeting may perhaps be arranged in the first week of Jan 2010 when majority of the musicians may be free.

With your tight schedule, you must be able to find time to attend the meeting along with MKR AND cleaveland Sundaram.

Rasikas can post their views.

Dear S.N,
I CANNOT PROMISE I WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND A SECOND MEETING MYSELF. THE FIRST ONE WE SHD. STICK TO THE SPEAKERS & SCHEDULE WE HAVE AGREED TO I HAVE POSTED. PL SEE POSTS 167TO 169.THERE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH STUFF THAT WILL BE COVERED WHICH MANY MUSICIANS MAY NOT BE PRIVY TOO. I DO NOT WANT TO DILUTE IT WITH TOO MANY COOKS! SO TO REPEAT WE SHD. NOT OFFICIALLY INVITE PROFESSIONSAL MUSICIANS & this meeting will be as described in the AGENDA.THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE TECHNICAL DISCUSSION & WILL COVER A VERY WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS. VKV

Dear Sri Nageswaran:

It will be my pleasure to attend the forum meeting on the 20th and my sincere thanks to you for graciously taking on the burden of hosting all of us. For me, it will an honor to meet the forum members who have contributed so much towards bringing in a very enlightened approach to appreciating Carnatic music. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and getting to know you.

Dear Nick H,
1) Speaking for only myself I intend speaking mostly in English EXCEPT FOR CERTAIN colloquial things especially in the morning where things could be recorded.
2) Also My suggestion(also request) is for you to hang around till end of Violin Concert as I feel it is Worth it; I want to discuss both the violin & Mridhangam sound & tonalty at least with you. This particular Violin-Mridhangam combo is in my opinion is AS GOOD AS IT GETS in carnatic music IN THESE ASPECTS AT LEAST in recent times. VKV

Dear brother-members, S.NAGESHWARAN & munirao2001, Kindly don’t try to further falicitate me for receiving the TTK award from MMA. In fact, I am dead against receiving any awards of any kind or even falicitations of any kind. Even when I was informed to receive this TTK award by Shri Pappu Venugopala rao, Secretary, MMA, whom I know having met him nearly 25 years back, I have refused to receive it. But, he pursuaded me to receive it on behalf of Telugu sect though not as ‘Akella’ and I had to agree with. Later, when I was informed to give a Lec-dem I felt far more happy to speak about what I have been doing for the betterment of our kids in music than receiving this award. I shall be very happy if my methods are well propagated and our kids are benefitted in music than falicitating me further.

In this connection I shall be arriving at Chennai in the morning on 29-12-2009 (Tuesday) to give the Lec-dem on 31-12-2009 from 9.25 am and to receive the award from MMA on 01-01-2010 and start back in the evening on 03-01-2010 (Sunday). There, as usual, I shall stay with my disciple, Chi. Sow. Revathy Krishnan (22434263, 9381043208) at Velachary to be accessible to meet all our Rasikas and friends. My mobile number is 9908822992. amsharma

Dear Rasikas,

The direction to reach my home from Panagal Park is given below for the Rasikas get together meeting on 20.12.2009.

From the Panagal Park, take the Doraisamy road Subway. Most of the vehicles will take a left turn to the Thambia Reddy road. Proceed along the Thambia Reddy road and take the 3 rd right turn to enter Srinivasa Pillai Road. After a few yards, you will see the Sathyanarayana temple on your left. 4th left house after the Sathyanarayanan temple is my home at old NO.21 / NEW nO.12 Srinivasa Pillai Street.

I am yet to get the confirmation of the participation of the get together meeting at my home from Chennai Rasikas and NRI forum members.

Please convey your plans early for me to finalize the catering facilities.

Could you give directions from Saidapet/CIT Nagar*, please? I got rather lost coming that way to Sri Subrmamaniam's home.

I do prefer to avoid the Panagal park traffic, although maybe such precaution is not necessary on a Sunday morning...

*that is, from taking the left turn off Anna Salai just before coming to S. Usman Road

Mr.Nick,

If you want to reach my home from Saidapet route, you have to come to T.Nagar bustand, take a left turn to Madley subway and turn right before Kasi viswanather temple. You have to reach the Mambalam Station road and take a left turn. You will be crossing the Lake view road and you reach Srinivasa Pillai Street after you cross Thambaiyya Reddy road.

I would prefer you to take the route via Panagal park rather than choosing the T.Nagar bus stand-Madley road since the roads are very narrow from Kasi viswanather temple.

Now it is your choice.

(If only Srinivasa Iyer/Iyengar/Pillai had lived far away from each other, all this confusion would not have arisen...but that was not to be. :))

Srinivasan can find his own streets and guide others too, when they say 'appanE SrinivAsA'!

Cienu, do look out for that man if he gets lost (you know him--the one in a vEshTi, kurta, a shoulder bag and no caste mark on his forehead).
