The concert started very late at 07:30 pm and ended exactly at 09:30pm.Over the years ,mallAdi brothers have a right sense of distribution within both of them , in the sense it is never a case of one dominating the other. Also incidentally they share very likely the first half where ravi takes a lead , and then shriram takes from the main atleast in terms of rAga alApanai . Also rAgas like todi is typically taken by sriram , so in a sense even rAga rotation is also fairly fixed between brothers. To that extent as with many dual singers the energy quotient is typically high which is because of the load factor.

Ravi started with a brief alApanai and the rAga contours stayed away from his cousin bahudAri and I latched it quite early, the krithi and swaras were well done. Huseni , a nadaswara piDi was always omnipresent from the rAga contours to the krithi and swaras it was gripping with the right speed . The traditional and most favourite submain in poorvikalyAni popped out with a nice alApanai and swaras , I would have preferred for them to cut loose more in neraval , kind of bit short.

The fast cAyatharangini was quite well done , but the yk kAmbOdhi contrast was much better. The main was leisurely as the krithi demands to an extent and they sang with a nice drop of neraval and swara sequence , incidentally the neraval was again bit shorter , but being a kamalAmbA krithi usually the neraval is not as expansive as a typical todi krithi of a shivan or a thyagarAja krithi(would love if some body breaks the artificial ceiling which is been there for century ). The alApanai of todi was handled by shriram.

Tukkadas were all well done ,the thamizh krithi is usually dropped by mallAdi as a post main tukkadA , the marubAri had a nice alankaram with ,,,. The one no that stood out the best was shriram's emotive slokham of this beautiful vaidehi sahitam both mohanam and kApi were top class. The sindhubhairavi tukkadA was just good .

Ganesh Prasad play was consistent with a lovely nAdham and his sense of proportion of violin returns were perfect. The doyen UKS was in full form in the tani with some beautiful strokes and lively exchange with EMS . The krithi play of UKS was not the best of best of UKS , but nevertheless still great. EMS did provide a very good support

Few short comings:
----------------
1. At times the malladi's pack with a little more voice power and it was quite loud , it would make sense if they moved little away from mike that too for power krithis like cayatharangini

2. The concert was for KVN anniversary, would have been little more appropriate if numbers of KVN popularized ones were taken . I am assuming KVN has sung nAgaswarali , this yk kAMbOdhi, but I am not sure if KVN is known that much to sing this particular tOdi,also KVN was known as neraval nararyanaswami, but there was not much neraval by the brothers . In short I would love any musician to give the right glimpse to inspire and educate the rasikas with more specifics of the dedicated artist.

But However the above 2 is minor

The biggest crib is the concert started at 07:30 pm , after a delayed start , ashok leyland seshasayee spoke and also UKS spoke , also anuradha (KVN's daughter) took away 10 minutes by reading few mails of few dignataries who could not come to this concert (like MS swaminathan's letter stating that he was not available because of his rome trip that he is undergoing now ), in short speech ate the concert.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours , the classicism was well exhibited :) . Kutcheri season is approaching so 2 hours is the norm

Rajesh,
As usual, enjoyed reading your review.
In kamalAmbikE, kamalAlaya tIrtha vaibhavE SivE (seems to me at least), is more apt as a neraval line. A few words but the line is meaningful and it makes room for 'savistAramAna' neraval.
Incidentally, I have heard KVN sing it, I think.
I am glad the PS song was not nAn oru viLAiyAttu bommaiyA!
UKS's super play AND a speech. I would be happy with just the former :)

his speech was also excellent as usual .. his base voice , impeccable language , his memories with kvn sir etc, etc.. unfortunately i came in late (but fortunate enough to listen to the full concert though ) only when he was telling how during winter season , the skin of the mrudangam artistes will get ( i dont know the term in english , but in tamil it is " veral lam vedichi poidum " ). But for kvn sir , he told " avarukku thAlam pottu veral lam vedichi poidum " .. such was his control and involvement over laya , and the " krishnA nEE bEganE " episode , which he has told us ...

Arvind ..
