Vidushi. Srividya Ramanath - vocal
Vidushi Kanchana Sruthiranjani - violin
vid. Bangalore R. Ramanath - mridangam

Indian Institute of World Culture, Bangalore
04 Oct 09, 6pm

1. sri mahaganapathim - atana - adi - maharaja jayachamrajya wodayar (raga sketch)
2. mAyAtita swarupini - mayamalava gowlai - rupakam - ponnaiah pillai (brief alapana, swaram @ mayatheertha swarupini)
3. bagayanayya - chandrajyothi - adi - thyagaraja (alapana, swara @ bagayanayya)
4. natajana palini nalinakanthi - nalinakanti - adi - thanjavur shankara iyer (alapana, neraval & swara @ paramakrupakari bakthamanohari)
5. upacharamu jesavaru unnarani - bhairavi - rupakam - thyagaraja (alapana, neraval & swara @ srikantha parulenai and tani avarthanam)
6. kanakamaya bhushana - ? - rupakam - ?
7. mangalam kosalendraya & swasti prajabya - surati

Srividya is one of earliest student of Vid. Neyveli Santhanagopalan, and is a popular teacher in bangalore.

For a 1-1/2 hour concert, the presentation was very good and well organized. swarams for mayamalava gowlai were good and classical, had some janta prayogas also. chandrajyothi alapana was refreshing, i haven't heard this raga for some time now. It was a good choice up in the order. Nalinakanthi alapana was done well, vakra swarupa of raga was well made use of - swaras like S G R M G R stood out well. Bhairavi alapana was done leisurely, sancharams in mandhara stayi were done, srividya reached upto mandhara panchamam. Also, the sancharams around tara stayi rishabham is worth mentioning, particularly sangathi like p R n d p, p d n d p. Violinist also rendered the alapana well during her turn, and covered tara stayi quite well, but didn't touch much on mandara stayi. She was little obtrusive during some parts in swara singing, trying to reproduce and follow closely. It is heartening to see that srividya included two neravals for a 1-1/2 concert, in these days, we see just neraval for main or sub-main piece only - even for established artists. Ramanath gave good support in mridangam, and thani was very short.

I left with longing for a longer concert. Not sure, why organizers conduct such short concerts - start at 6.00pm and end at 7.30pm(;- Thank god, no in between speech. Garlanding was complete before concert, and brief vote of thanks was before mangalam.

Hari,
Can't see her face in the picture. Is she the one who played a second tambUri for NSG at his Indranagar concert in February?
bAgAyanayya is making a comeback, I think. Recently, somone sang it in Chennai and I saw it in one of our concert lists.

Hari- U r so much used to attending concerts in B'lore. Let it be any nook & corner u make it a point to attend the concert. U r put up in Marathahalli which is quite far away for almost all the Sabhas but for INDIRANAGAR.

I really envy U!!!

The other day u have come all the way to ISRO Layout to attend RK Srikantan's concert. I felt so bad, i was in the neighbourhood only since I did n't update myself abt this concert i could n't attend. Every FRiday , I will send a mail to u to know Concert updates in B'lore.

Presently Gayana Samaja Annual Conf must be on with NSG on the first day's slot.

Is TMK singing in this conf ?? Pl update.

Thanks, Hari, for the interesting review (as always). p R n d p is indeed a rare phrase in bhairavi! NaLinakAnthi must've been great - an NSG school special!

This is Bangalore R. Ramanath the mridhangam artist in the picture. Thanks for the compliment, if that is what was meant. I am a fan of Sri. Palani Subramania Pillai.
Hope Hari could put the recording online, since he has made a recording of the concert, on the behest of the artists.
