In the recent floods in Andhra Pradesh, the holy town of Mantralayam at the banks of river Thungabadra was the worst hit. Many important buildings of the mutt and the houses of the staff were severely damaged. Lot of shops in the vicinity were washed away. The estimated amount to rehabilitate touches an amount of Rs.70 crores.
On 18th November 2009, a programme was arranged at Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Mahaswamigal Hall, Vani Mahal, T.Nagar jointly by Dakshina Mantralaya, Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam Rasikas Trust and Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha for the benefit of relief and rehabilitation work at Mantralayam.
It began with a namasankirthanam programme by Udayalur Kalyanarama Bhagavathar who gave an enchanting bhajan programme that filled the hearts of everyone present there with bhakthi. He also appealed to contribute to this cause and announced a purse of Rs.25,000/- on behalf of all bhagavathas for the relief work.
Following this was a lilting performance on the violin by Lalgui G J R Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi. Their main rendering of Bhairavi - a favourite raga of Guru Raghavendra Swami was a sumptuous treat with a combination of bhakthi and melody.
In his splendid performance Shri O S Thiagarajan started with Endhuku nirdaya - an apt song questioning God why he went merciless. The main item Nidhi Chala Sukhama and the niraval at Sumathi Thiagaraja were captivating.
The concluding concert was a group rendering by nearly 50 artistes singing Saint Thiagaraja’s vintage masterpieces - the pancharathna krithis followed by Sri Raghavendra Swami’s divine composition Indu Enage Govinda . The group singing was led by veteran vocalists - Shri T K Govinda Rao and Shri P S Naryanaswamy.
In between the concerts video presentations explained the rage of Thungabadra and the magnitude of the damage in the holy town.
If the music filled the hearts of rasikas there, the video presentation filled everyone’s eyes with tears.
The organisers announced that the day's collections touched Rs. 4 lakhs which were received only by cheques favouring "SRS Mutt Flood Rehabilitation Account"
