It was a good concert. All the kritis were rendered very well. The renditions bared the stamp of her lineage, the DKP/DKJ bANi. The AlApanais were very very elaborate, the neraval svarams were also pretty elaborate and long. The violinst was good and gave fitting replies all through. The mridangist was very good and played very appropriately for all the pieces. His accompanying for the neraval and svarams were awesome too. The tani was great.

Varalakshmi's AIR concert was broadcast at 8.45 this morning(18-11-09).
She gave a mind blowing concert with so much confidence and exuberance. Over a period of time so much maurity is seen in her presentation. Good amount of speed, with a balance of weight and measured swaras marked her concert today.
A really good artist in the CM camp.

I happened to hear her AIR concert yesterday. She is highly talented with a beautiful voice taht has both sweetness & azhutham justifying to the school she belongs.
Her raga essays of Mohanam & Bhairavi were of the top order and Bharathiyar's Asaimukham marandhupoche was icing on the cake.Raksha bettare was sung soulfully. An artist of her calibre is still not promoted to the prime slot in MA is really heartening.
Dr.M.Narmada's violin accompaniment was noteworthy as she played purely on her own manodharmam stepping out totally from her parur style.A welcome change indeed !
The vocalist has to improve her diction in kannada IMHO since I couldn't understand a word of the Mohanam kriti.

Ofcourse, as long as subtle put-downs such as the one quoted exist, this will be the bane of all musicians, and the reason why mridangists are given short shrift

On a separate note, why are mridangists "accompanyists" - a legacy "trademark" in many ways but burdensome nevertheless - while keyboard players, pianists, saxophone folks, chitraveena et al are considered "collaborators".

Mahesh3,
What put down?
While I was happy to see Ram being mentioned, it occured to me that in many instances pakka vAdyam artistes do not get any mention. I am all for the artistes who contribute to a concert along with the vocalist.
Sorry, you have quoted me correctly but have misconstrued my intent.
May I say you seem to be more tolerant of negative posters than of me? Please correct me if I am reading you wrong

Arasi, I am not intolerant of you. Every thread I read has to have a post by you, and this has been going on for so many years ...not an issue with me, but just pointing out that I am not intolerant:)!
I dont know if I am more or less tolerant of negative posters.....one can be meaningfully negative if one has a point!

Let me try to fix this communication breakdown here. It is quite confusing as to what you two are talking about, it looks like instead of clarifying one point another point is made that requires a clarification.
Mahesh, See if this is what you are trying to say.
- You are not accusing Arasi of putting down accompanying musicians, subtle or otherwise, ( since she was the one who was pointing out the omissions ) but rather you are referring to the subtle put downs in reviews by not naming those musicians
(- And less importantly, you are not making mild fun about anyone's posting frequency but rather welcome them as a fan? )
There is enough ambiguity in your statements, so I understand the cause of the confusion. Hope this resolves it. If not, may be you two should consider taking it offline.

AE: There is no purposeful obfuscation. in post 11, I clearly pointed out Arasi's subtle put-down!
In post 14, I merely pointed out that while I stand by observation, it is not because I am intolerant of Arasi. Nor am I more tolerant of negative posters...if anything I am more tolerant of Arasi
. Thats it. I am not responding more.

Mahesh, I then completely take back my interpretation. I was 100% wrong.
I do not know what subtle put-downs you are perceiving in that quoted sentence from Arasi. In fact I read the opposite.
Anyway, this kind of dancing with words and meanings on your part, purpose obfuscation or not, in not the purpose of this thread.
Let us move on!!
