Sanjay Subrahmanyan with Varadarajan on Violin and Neyveli Venkatesh on Mridangam.
Please feel free to correct my typos or other errors!
1. Evvaremi Bodhana - Sahana varnam - Ata
2. Manavyalakim Charadhate - Nalinakathi - Aadhi
3. Senthamizh thaayai potruvome - Chakravaham - Thishra thriputa
4. Samiki Sari cheppajala velpula - Begada - Roopakam
5. Annai Janaki Vandhale - Saveri - Aadhi
6. Vihaara Maanasa - Kaapi - Misra Chapu with neraval at Purandharadi vinute. I think this is a Swati thirunal song but not sure.. The raagam, swarams were amazing and havent heard such a detailed Kaapi! And I think his voice was at its best with this song!
7. Kadavulai Maravaade - Thandavam - Adi
8. EnnaRakshiso - Shubapanthuvarali - Roopakam
9. RTP in Priyadarshini (thankfully, he announced the raagam before!) and the pallavi was :
Ninnaye Rathi Yendru Ninaikiren Adi - (Aadhi 2 kalai)
with swarams (I think!!) in Kedharam, Huseini, Saama, Anandabhairavi, Janaranjani, Naataikurinji, Vasantha
followed by the full Bharathiyaar song in Baageshri.
The whole RTP was a wonderful experience, the swarams (my favorite of the list being Naataikurinji was so touching!)
10. Uppum Karpooramum virutham followed by Innamum oruthalam - Behaag - Adi
11. Verse in Mohanam, another verse in Kaanada, and another verse in Hamsanandhi and them Bhimplas
(someone, please fill this in - i failed to write it down)..
12. Engum niraindhirukkum - Kurinji
13. Virutham in SindhuBhairvi followed by a Thillana.
14. Mangalam!
Wonderful wonderful concert and as usual great rapport betn the accompanists and Sanjay! Varadarajan produces such beautiful music and Venkatesh always so vibrant!!
But the seats could have been better. I wish it wasnt seats with rows of wooden benches.. Its petty considering the quality of the concert but last years Hickman Hall was so comfy!

Fantastic concert. Actually I really loved the way Varadarajan played - he was phenomenal - in fact in a few instances really floored the audience. Excellent rapport on stage between Venkatesh, Sanjay and Varadarajan. The Kapi alapana by Sanjay was just divine.
#5 Annai JAnaki VandhaLE is by Arunachala Kavi.
Couple of more observations - no MD compositions and Hamsanandi was the only prati madhyama offering. I think the Thillana was Oothukkadu Venkatasubbaiyer's.
Top drawer stuff.

We were at the concert yesterday also. Absolutely divine! He seemed so fresh at the end when he mingled with the rasikas that he could have easily sung for one more hour! He was kind enough to let my son have a picture taken with him. The profile of the crowd was much younger obviously compared to T.V.Sankaranarayanan in October. 4 hours of heaven!

Last I heard, Subhapantuvarali was a prati madhyama raga unless something happened since. The thillana should have been either S. Kalyanaraman's or MDR's. The chance that an oothukkadu composition would have found its way into a Sanjay concert is zero.musicapriya wrote:Fantastic concert. sanjay has already joined the ,Galaxy of Great masters of Music ,Whenever he handles a ,Ghana Raga, or any raga.develops amazingly ,finishes it beautifully you feel the ,Vishwarupadarshana,of theRaga Deavatha. Varadarajan and sanjay are made for each other and Venkatesh too. It is happy, happy combination of ,nadam, and vidwath. of the three artistes.God bless them/

Arasi, A four-hour Sanjay concert does bring lurkers like me out of the woodwork:-) Lucky you, to be in India during the season. Looking forward to your (and others') season chronicles.
@mahesh3: Yes it is, except while practicing music, instead of properly singing the basic exercises the kid wants to sing like Sanjay:-) The cockiness of 6-year olds:-)
@manikand28 : You can try contacting Charsur by email too.

So...a few thoughts, not a review by any means. Sanjay is beyond all this now!
I dont recall all the verses, but there was one engaging verse where Sanjay started with "jalam mel naddakkalAm...."...i wrote it down, will look for it tomorrow. The expression he brought to this particular verse was one of sheer bravado....Sanjay's choices of ragams, compositions, composers, talams and the mood he set right all thru the concert was a dream.
In the past I've agitated/protested about Sanjay singing stuff like oho kaalame after a long alapana of sahana, but in the NY concert he brought out this engaging verse about time, and then sang oho kaalame in the latter part of the concert...it was poignant. So, Sanjay has evolved, yet he's not beyond mischief as he showed by continually expanding the scope of the swaraprastharas he did in Kapi and RTP ...
. I loved it....kept me immersed!
Ninaiye Rathi as a composition is not something I've particularly ever taken to.....and I've somehow personally always objected to the idea of Bharathi "and" Carnatic music...., to me they dont go hand-in-hand....but Sanjay's interpretation was original, creative and well justified! He found a place for Bharathi in the pallavi line, exactly where it can have the desired effect.
We've all heard of MMD, Arunachalam Pillai, PS and Bharathi on their own merit as composers or poets...but to cascade their compositions through a concert and keep everyone hooked is something I have not seen. Sanjay has scaled a peak...
