Help needed-Listening to Concerts and preparing song List
I have been wondering If I could use this forum to look for volunteers to listen to Concerts ,prepare song lists and help me in the process of cataloguing.
These concerts cover almost all the major artists-they include old radio recordings- and were converted in one go (from spools and un-indexed tapes) by a good samaritan .
The volume of work is very huge since the conversions covered more than 300-350 spools and an equal number of tapes.
They were done with a view to preserve the music that would have been otherwise lost.
So it will require a large number of volunteers working on different artists.
Volunteers will not have to make any commitments .
There is no time frame even.
I will ship the recordings if they are in India , and even find ways of moving them if outside.
And I am in the process of sending across another bunch of 150 spools , since the good soul has indicated that he would make one more attempt at conversion...
For the sake of posterity.
any one interested in this activity can mail me at inmech@gmail.com

I have had a few responses already.
some more clarifications.
The concerts will be in tracks of 45 minutes duration if recorded from tapes and 72 minutes if made from spool.
Nothing else is known about the contents , except maybe accompanists and venue.
so the Volunteer will have to listen through and keep jotting the names of songs and raga.Thala and composer if available would be great.
Those who mail me , alos please indicate your favourite artists so that i can make sure you listen to artists whom you like 8)

Chennaibased members are still welcome to respond
Kaumaram .. this is not for conversion of tapes.
This is for listening to tracks -mp3-labelled like say Track1, or 2 or 3 , and listing the krithis rendered.

Dear Coolkarni,
Hope I am not late.
"Kaumaram .. this is not for conversion of tapes.

I understand that you are getting the tapes converted to MP3 initially. Ofcourse, you may be knowing that MP3 is a lossy compression.. It will be better to convert the tapes to wave and then to a lossless format like flac or wavpack. These are like ZIP or RAR format for Datafiles. The compression possible is about half only, but then HDDs and CDR-blanks are so cheap nowadays. At a later date, the files can be converted to the format of choice, like mp3 or mp4 or OGG. Once you have the original audio files in lossless format, processing can be done at a later date by different people to reduce the noise or restore the music. This cannot be done on MP3 etc. Even if you are having the original tapes, it will be difficult to redegitise them. If you have the original files in Lossless format, redegitising from the tapes is not required.
You may be knowing all the above, and you may be doing the same..
I can also undertake the preparation of songlists. I am in Hyderabad.

Dear Coolkarni
I will be more than happy to help with this. Unfortunately it can be only for tapes and not for spools as I do not have a spool player. But do note that I am based in Singapore.
I can ask my father to also help - he will be more than happy and has the time and ability too - he is based in Delhi.
Favourite artists would include (GNB, MMI, SSI, DKJ, TVS, MLV) - but not really constrained by this.
