Ms Shantala Subramaniam presented a very neat, aesthetically refined, gayaki style flute concert under the auspices of Mylapore Arts Academy for their ongoing music series at Dakshinamurthy Auditorium, P S High School, Mylapore yestarday. She was very well supported by the experienced Ganesh Prasad on the violin, highly talented Anand Ananthakrishnan on the Mridangam and the the ever supportive Dr Karthik on the Ghatam. Though I missed the earlier concerts in this series which is being held till 29th Nov, this was a very satisfactory concert. For any artist coming under the shade of a giant (Shantala is the younger sister of Maestro Shashank), it becomes that much more tougher to make a mark for oneself , for, the bench mark is that much higher. Fortunately Shantala was able to get over that syndrome and was able to prove herself as a very good artist with neat presentation. After the initial numbers(varnam was taken up in Chaturasram and Tisram Melkalam) Kannadagowla was taken up for elaborate treatment. I have not heard detailed alapana of Kannadagowla in the recent past. It is to be appreciated that Shantala was able to take it up and gave a neat picture of KG, with the raga progressing slowly, in all sthayis. It was a treat to hear. Ganesh Prasad responded nicely and brought out the nuances of the raga ably. Pantuvarali was the main item and the raga elaboration was developed aesthetically covering all the facets of Pantuvarali in a leisurely manner. Ganesh Prasad was equally aesthetic in his version. Anand was very supportive and his strokes was a laya buff's delight. The tani with Dr Karthik was good. It was a change that Shantala presented Naadu Pai as the last item instead of the usual 'Pavamana'. Overall it was a nice concert and the young artist with sound sense of aesthetics, laya gnanam and musical sense, has all the makings of a great artist in the years to come

It is sad to see when people make such comments as above for another artiste.anote wrote:Shanthala can in no way be compared to her illustrious brother Shashank - has the talent but doubt if she can ever get close.
It only makes me wish a 1000 times that Shantala ji would surpass every accomplished flute genius.
