3 is probably Sanathana Parama Pavana in Phalamanjari? And maybe 4 is Marivere in Lathangi by Patnam.

Yes. Item 3 is "Sanathana Parama Pavana" and item 4 is "Marivere Dhikkevaru".

WOW! Just when I was wondering if they'd ever go back to playing the violin!! Interesting to note that there was no abhang in the song list!

It is a good idea for the sisters to give viloin concerts also, lest they become "out of touch" with their "beginnings"

I used to enjoy the sisters' violin playing tremendously, and I still feel that the quality of their vocal music [at least in the concerts of theirs that I have heard] is nowhere near the standard set by their performances as violinists [both as a duo and as accompanying artistes]. This is wonderful news and I hope Smt. Ranjani and Smt. Gayathri will resume giving violin concerts at least intermittently.

If I am right, this concert was advertised as a vocal concert, possibly because they were not feeling well they converted it into a violin concert. 2 years before too in mfac, they did the same there were few eyebrows raised then .I guess it is one of the best ways to get a violin concert in evening slot.

Whoa, really? If this is true, it's incredible, given how brilliant their vocal concerts usually are ... Can someone point me to a recording?

I find this incredible too ... a solo violin concert is no joking matter and certainly no easier than a vocal concert, especially if you're feeling under the weather (unless it's a directly voice related issue like a sore throat) ... In fact, it's amazing enough that they should even be in 'concert' shape as violinists to pull off a last minute switch like that! Besides, would you just the send home the originally scheduled accompanying violinist?

I guess you could chalk it down to my questionable tastes in music, but I have never found anything remotely brilliant about any vocal concert of theirs that I have attended, at least 10 performances. They have always been competent - never mediocre, but hardly revelatory.

On the other hand, I have always enjoyed their style of violin playing, especially when they were frontline accompanying artistes in the 90s.

The same could be argued of MS Amma.

Anyhow, I think they have very well trained voices (esp. Gayatri). As regards their creativity - I would rate their AlApanai high but not so their neraval and kalpanAswaram. RTP would be much lower.

But their Sahitya rendering is very good and the latter half of their concerts is better than most others (viruttham, thukkudAs, abhangs/bhajans etc.).

They have a lot of potential and I'm sure will get better with time.

Well, no accounting for taste, I suppose ... :) I must confess I've never been a great fan of the modern female voice until I heard them, unless you're talking about a Vedavalli or an MLV.

Off the top of my head, here are some strong points:

1. Perfect sruthi balance and extremely pliant voices (something that even 'frontline' male artists like TMK and Sanjay lack)

2. Amazing mudippu (finishing) of sangathis, especially Gayathri. On many an occasion, I've been blown away by how she brings out the beauty of the raga in these finishing touches.

3. Weighty concerts almost always containing an RTP, multiple neravals and engaging swarams.

4. Beautiful viruthams, as someone as already pointed out.

Prashant, I guess you could consider these to be my very questionable opinions!

newyorker,

There are many good female vocalists, though perhaps they find it hard to make it to New York.

I don't like elongating mudippus too much. I think that lightens the music, rather than let the weight of the song itself be felt.

I'm not a big fan of viruthams either.
