SK R. Vedavalli gave a lec dem On Kalyani- sankarabaranam, Arabhi-devagandhari and Sama- kedara gowla on 19th dec at the mini hall.
I attended this session only at the tail end. The hall was full and one could not gain entry as rasikas were seated on the floor besides sizable portion on the dais with more standees .
1. She vividly explained how these ragas are handled by Thyagaraja and MD.
2. Two different padantharam exists as regards to PR keerthani in arabhi.
3. one should concentrate on practical and much importance need not be given to theory initially.
4. She has cases of students securing more marks by mugging up theory w/o any basic knowedge in singing a raga.
5. Dilineation of Ragas do have kalapramanam and that should be adhered too.
6. Too much of speed in rendering raga and swaram will mar the beauty of the raga and kriti.
7. Even rasikas are guru in one aspect. They are quite capable of giving comments for one to correct
8. Short time learning like fast food and getting on the dais will never help. One should learn in the academinc pattern of +2 . Minimum of 12 years of learning CM will make a man little perfect.
9. She expressed her view on releasing CDs and Albums by youngsters.
Prof SRJ and Prof TRS appreciated her efforts in bringing out clearly the true picture of these ragas.SK designate Valayapatty in his concluding speech recollected his memory of accompanying Karukurichi several years before at selam and nadaswaram wizard's rendering of bhiravi ragam with kalapramanam . It is possible to follow dilineation of raga only in tavil. Once PMI after listening to his performance complimented him by saying , his playing of tavil is like listening to mirudangam. He also mentioned that one hour slot will not be sufficient for such valuble dem by R Vedavalli and in future MA should arrange for a seperate lec dem by her. The restless Pappu Rao who found the lec dem exceeding the time limit kept quiet on seeing the enthusiastic rasikas interest. This time more committee members were present including MSG and TVG to name few. As I could not attend from the beginning, a detailed write up from any of our forumites is most welcome.
