Aishwarya Venkatraman @nAgeshwaran's concert on Dec 20th ,2009
-------------------------------------------------------------
Aishwarya the young girl from Los angeles is a disciple of Shri TN Krishnan and she also learns from SRJ. She gave a concert a year back for our rasikas concert . Aishu always has the musical spark and she is getting little more closer to TNK's style and is playing with a lot of confidence and there is lot of sowkhyam in her play.

I went to her personally and said play any number other than what you played for our last concert . She was confident and played all numbers different from what she had played before.Incidentally when one hears a continous talk for 2 hours plus , if the play is bit contemplative and not very assertive it makes a whole lot of difference to me for sure. Aishu went with that contemplative mood.

Her start was in mahaganapathim with a round of alAp all in madhyama kAlam, she played it sweet and never rushed in sangathis and never went fast .The second number was a beauty and the pick of the day for me, mAyamAlvagowlai in meru samAnA was in a kalapramanam some where in between MDR and semmangudi for both speeds she played swaras , very aesthetic . chandrajyothi bhagayanayya was nice and crisp.

The next was some janya of harikAmbOdhi zone , i think kOikaladhwani.Aishu mentioned that yesterday she witnessed Prof TNK playing bilahari in brahma gana sabha and she is taking up bilahari , the meditative tone died after chandrajyothi and tOli Janma was more of a display of violinist virtuosity especially in playing fast sangathis. The alApana the first one in bilahari was crisp and the swaras were very good.

She took tOdi as a main with the most detailed alApana and she demonstrated few TNK mandhira sthayi passages of todi it was nice. The main was endukku dayarAdurA and she played well. The tani for few minutes was played at the end of jagadoDharana , it was very balanced and well done.

I asked for desh but I was told by Aishu she did not know that yet, she instead played a besh besh madura mani Note to end. Aishu's dad venkataraman (sishya of palakkad raghu) played aptly for the whole concert . Overall a very good to excellent concert for 1 hour and 10 minutes.

1. mahAganapathim (R S)- nAttai -md
2.mEru samAna (S)- mmgowlai- T
3.bhAganayya - chandrajyothi - T

4. kokilAdhwani???
5. tOli jaNma (R S)- bilahari - T
6. endukku dayarAdhurA (R) - todi - T

7. jagadOdhArana - hind kApi - PD
8. note- shankarabharanam - hmb

Toli janma, along with paridAna micitE, seems to be delivered briskly in general. I suppose there is a charm in a rapidfire exposition of bilahari, but I always prefer the slow, tranquil versions. Thanks for the review, Rajesh, and keep up the good work, Aishu! The kOkiladhwani might've been toli nEnu, a TNK stock item.

Exactly . I infact remember one TNK concert around 1998-99 , in ayodhya mandapam i think where he played an absolutely out of the world bilahari , the slow and tranquil version ( "smarasadhA mAnasa bAlagopAlam" ) . Its amazing how some musicians make some ragas all their own . I very much liked aishu's bilahari also . She played it really well .

Feel bad that I missed this concert and get together at Nageshwaran's home. And I was in Chennai too. I caught up with Aishwarya today at Ragasudha hall concert. I have posted my review.

Excellent review by Rajeshnat--incidentally it was a pleasure to meet you in person---like so many of MMI fans --several of you who never had an opportunity to hear him live-hopefullly thro these columns and recordings we could create for all fans a true flavor of MMI.
Your comments about Aishu's playing are very apropo.Ofcourse Aishu has to go a long way thro sheer practice but the very fact that she and her dad choose to spend so much time In India despite the logistical difficulites shows her determination. VVS's challenge incidentally is a very innovative challenge(Can we all elect VVS to be President of Music Academy--How does he come up with such bright ideas. He has done yeoman service to CM in NA @ great personal cost and sacrifice .

re; the points about the raga Bilahari-- I had suggested--because of the shortness of the concert to play Na Jeevadara which she told me she is planning to play in one of the future concerts but instead was kind enough to oblige us with Bilahari and played Toli janmamu--which TNK had played the previous day @ Brahma Gana Sabha.
The presence of Dr.Narmada despite her crowded schedule(she also attended Aishu's SAFE concert earlier last week) was heartening and the quiet unobtrusive manner she conducted herself was really commendable and worth emulating.(I regretted I "blabbbered" too long instead of "drawing" her into our rasikas concerns/discussions!!).

Nick, thanks for the pics and your participation. Hope to catch you again "orbiting" the concert circuit!!

Gamakam--I missed meeting you--unless you were too cagey during our intros to reveal your true identity!!!

CMLover I shall continue my narratives or "yarns" as my kids would say after the season is over-Have attended about ten concerts so far and some of them have already been reviewed by forum members--I will try to present an "overarching" view of the whole scene.
Infact here is an idea I am trying to float(perhaps we can open a separate thread)--namely how can this "diverse" group of genuine music lovers can band together as a force to help arrive at a consensus as to How to Spot and codify talent(I know this is subjective to a certain extent and perhaps may not be attainable)--some kind of criteria/template that CM orgs could use and another idea --in pursuance of rajeshnat's comment in one of the posts --How to broaden the listener base for CM given the proliferation of talent/institutions.

Altogether judging from those who were present for the "meet" and the comments from the Nonattendees I am very much heartened and proud to be a member of this group. It is my hope this does not turn out to be an elitist forum and must be inclusive of all--beginners,nonperformers etc.

Sienu--great pics!!
