It was really a wonderful concert by the Master - the true master that he is . A jampacked music academy including the balcony in the morning at 9:15 am and that too on the second working day of the week. Many vidwans & youngsters (musicians) attended. The Master was seen in full flow in his alapana of purvi kalyani, yadhukula kambodhi and the virutham at the end . In fact the master was so much engrossed and the music was flowing , that Malladi Brothers had to remind him in the last minutes to end the concert when the 2.5 hours duration was over.
In the Nedunuri Garu did mention that this was his 55th concert at the Academy and he was thankful and grateful to all rasikas who had turned up in large numbers and the authorities of Music Academy (in that order) for having given him this opportunity.

I attended this spectacular concert. It is the first time I heard this great musician live. It was such an inspiring experience that I have already taken my New Year's resolution to be more serious about pursuing Carnatic music. I'm hoping that this public promise will help me keep my resolution!

I was fortunate to be there at the concert. It was a sublime concert. I really like the kalpana
swarams in Madhyamavathi.

Perhaps the only veteran who has performed without a break in Music Academy for over 50 years :)
A true genius and a Master. His Madhyamavathi is special!

Semmu86- I too missed this important concert. No way I could have because of working day and it is a morning slot.

No-music-only-work boss is a pain and trouble. If you have no-CMusic-spouse you have double trouble. If your wife is asking "Pattu Pudavai" from Pothys for every concert you attend (otherwise called ransom !!!), you have triple-trouble.

Sometimes, your boss might not object to go for evening concerts. You can at least go to MA where the concert starts only 7 PM (may be for us only!!!).

GRS, what are the chances of getting tickets at MA if one walks in at 7 PM or 6:45ish?

For the concerts in MA most of the tickets are blocked by season ticket holders .They just give tickets just before 07:000pm or preferably give it after few songs to ensure that the seats are vacant, you will get tickets of Rs 100,but be prepared to lose atleast 1 or 3 songs for sure. But if you have 400 bucks with you or more no worries you can get it .

MA is one sabha where rasikas like me who decide in the last one hour is not suited.

sridhar_rang- You have Rs. 75 ticket for Balcony. Though, season tikcet holders block half the portion, you have remaining vacant.

If you are in Chennai, go at 10 AM and get ticket. Rs. 75 ticket for both 4.15 and 7 PM slots. So, you have two Prime time programmes.

On Last saturday, Malladi Brothers (4.15) and priya Sisters (7), the tickets were sold at 11 AM. (I got the ticket at 10.45 AM, he said only 5 tickets were left).

Let me tell you, coming sunday, you have Saketharaman, Gayathri Venkatragavan, TM Krishna- There will be a biq queue like ration shop at 9.30 AM.

You have very good acoustics. So, even balcony, you have better view and listening..

They allow you to sit in the dias, after the programme starts. I don't know the procedures. .....

IF YOU are going at 6.45 PM,, Iam afraid you won't get the ticket. But if you are wise, try either the dias or go to the canteen, tip Rs. 50 for the server, sit in the corner and listen to the concert through the speaker system.. THAT IS THE BEST...

"Saketharaman, Gayathri Venkatragavan, TM Krishna". A small catch here. Here I think saketharaman's will be free admission ie not ticketed.
So with your ticket say Rs 75 (I guess no reserved seat numbers), if you are at saketharaman's concert till he sings mangalam, then you will be asked to
go out of the hall for ticketed evening sessions. Then when you come out, you will find a long queue standing already in Balconi doors. So you may
skip post thani of saketharaman and come out and get to the decent begining of the queue and hence you can manage a good seat. The big problems about
MA is the booked tickets by members (or season pass , not sure) at good view points.

Thanks Rajesh and GRS for those tips...For three years I never attempted to go to MA during the season for fear of being turned away, guess I will try now....it is difficult for me to go there at 10 AM due to work pressures, except on weekends....I will have to choose the 'less pouplar' ones or choose the dais probably.

what are the regular prices for non-balcony seats (front and back rows)? How much does their season pass cost? membership fees?

Returning to the concert itself ...

My impression was that Nedunuri was in such a good mood overall that many small things could easily be overlooked. For example, he used
more notes than I have usually seen him do, and also had quite a few conversations with Ravikumar seated just behind him (not just the end of concert time reminder). This did detract from the overall flow of the concert. The other aspect was that the only neraval, in Madhyamavati, was a bit of a token one.

But much more important was the free flowing music that came through on the day. The Kalyani ragam preceding the varnam and the choice phrasing of the varnam lines made for a great start. I had heard neither E paniko nor adi kadu bhajana and I really appreciate his repertoire of Tyagaraja songs and his desire to sing so many of them. The Yadukula Kambodi ragam was thoughtful and detailed and convincing. Sriram Parasuram played with attention throughout and although he did not get the pallavi line right in the YK song, he contributed a good alapana. At least on one occasion, he was caught by surprise by Nedunuri's choice of phrase in what is usually a cliched and well worn raga. That brings me to why it is so interesting to hear seniors like this. Ultimately, most of the phrases we hear in ragams, especially the weighty ones, are all well known, it is only the judgement and selection and of course, execution that makes it compelling. Singers like Nedunuri and Parasala Ponnamal a couple of days earlier, reflect their years of aesthetic training in selection of phrases which leaves you with a wholesome feel at the end of it.

The jonpuri was as tuneful as always and the Kamas was outstanding. Like I have seen him do it in Modi jesevalara, he seems to have one more trick up his sleeve just when you think he is done with sangatis and variants in these javalis. The Malladi brothers had to watch him constantly in this one as they did not know what was coming up.

During the viruttam, as I could see he was running out of time, I was hoping for his trademark Janaki ramana, which I am willing to listen any number of times. But he actually sung some of those memorable phrases in the viruttam itself and moved on to Sindhubhairavi, which was actually very good also.

Tani was electric and all that a lay listener like me could wish for.

All in all, such a pleasure to listen to this type of unhurried, thoughtful and melodious music (as one nonagenarian in the seats got up and exclaimed after the YK song and had to be shushed down - poor man - and I'm sure many in the audience identified with him!).

Can a regular rasika get a hold of these season passes?
How early do we have to start? And how would you go about buying them from overseas?

Beautifully put. I felt the same way after listening to Smt. Vedavalli yesterday and Smt. Ponnammaltoday.
