Violin: S.Varadarajan

1. Varnam - Kanada, Ata, S
2. Sri Kanchi Nayike - Asaveri, Rupakam, Subbaraya Sastry
3. Maravadiru Maname - Kedaram, Desadi, Koteeswara Iyer, RS
4. Kalyana Gopalam - Pantuvarali, Kanda chapu, Narayana Theerthar, RNS
5. Edayya Gati - Chalanattai, Adi, Koteeswara Iyer
6. Kori Sevimparare - Karaharapriya, Adi, Thyagaraja, RS, Tani
7. Pada Vendume - Hamsanadam, Rupakam, M.M.Dandapani Desikar
8. RTP - Rasali, Adi, 1 kalai, "Karuninchara Lokadara"
Ragamaligai svarams in Kamas, Hamsadvani, Bahudari, Varali, Salaga Bhairavi, Nalinakanthi, Surutti
9. Nadi thedi - Bagesri, Tisra Ekam, Thiruppugazh
10. Managalam

A very satisfying concert with everything I was hoping for in a concert (except maybe tisram, trikalam in RTP). The teamwork was wonderful. It was nice to listen to Rasali, which I haven't heard much.

# Sri kAnchi nAyikE is by annaswami sAstri
# rtp in rasaali should have been very nice ,in this year festival I heard once by TNS who started with a krithi in that raga.

Yes, indeed. The organizers were pushing to finish, but Sanjay had to already stretch his limit by 10 minutes......

Difficult to sing 3 ragas and have time for RTP as well. At the risk of offending Sanjay fans, this concert was just average (proof being the thani got the biggest applause of the evening). Varadarajan's accompaniment was nice.

rasali (janya of vanaspathi)in my opinion was popularized by Lalgudi jayaraman sir , there is a krithi aparAdhamula nOrva which is the reference krithi of this rAga. Melakartha 1 to 4 and its janyas have a special charm.

There is a popular number tuned by illayaraja , my memory slips now , will let you know later.

The Thyagaraja Kriti - Aparadhamulanorva in Rasali - had been sung and popularized by Sri. Madurai Mani Iyer. So is by LGJ. The concert was very good - except for the time restriction due to the next programme

that is availabe in sangeethapriya.

What was noteworthy about the RTP was the ragamalika part.

Sanjay creatively embedded the swarams of popular kritis' pallavi and anupallavi and then sang the RTP pallavi in same tune as the pallavi of original kriti. For instance, the swarams for nalinakanthi embedded the swaras for 'mana vyalakin's pallavi and anupallavi qnd then he sang the 'karuninchara lokadhara' in same tune as 'mana vyalakin'. Same was the case with bahudhari - brova bhaarama. salaa bhairavi was padavini. That was very wonderfully done.

A concert to remember.
The PantuvarALi and RasALi (name of a special kind of bananas too--is it still around?).
The kharaharapriya was a treat. It was particularly so since it was far superior to the one he sang last season (same kOri sEvimpa) at VAni Mahal last season.
varada venkatEsa (muzhavu) combination with Murali lifted the concert.

Arasi: It is Rasthali not rasali--by the way nice to be bumping into each other mostly at the eateries in the various sabhas==either we both have similar musical tastes(that drives us out to the eateries) or the timing of our "gustatory urges" are similar!!!

Wasn't Sumi enchanting @ the German Hall-- pity I had to leave early as my concert-hopping spree demanded it!!
Hope to see each other in the remainder of the season and compare notes.

RMK,
There is rastALi and also rasALi (andhrA speciality?). Anyway, it is fun bumping into you and Nirmala at eateries. While you folks eschew sweets, I go for the old-fashioned sweets that only sabha canteens seem to offer these days. Other eateries are flooded with the northern milk and cream based sweets! Well, you have established that I'm a gourmand too!
Yes, Sumitra Nitin sang very well in all her concerts this season that I heard--my team mate...

Coming back to Sanjay, that kharaharapriyA was indeed a treat--hope a fellow-member who questioned why I was not floored by the one he sang last year sees this: 'This' was a kharaharapriyA I haven't heard rendered this richly in many years...

I attended this concert. I somehow felt Sanjay was not at his best in the first part of the concert but from Karahapriya alapana onwards he came into his self. Thani was very good.

Overall certainly not his best concert...

Sorry to digress from the topic: We really enjoyed Pal Kozhukattai after the concert....!
