Hamirkalyani and Bairavi alapana by SUDHA RAGUNATHAN and Embar.S.Kannan were just outstanding. Hamirkalyani krithi was wonderfully accompanied by Vaidyanathan and Raman. The thani was interesting as well !!

The pallavi had crisp exchanges in 10 ragams between SR and Kannan , one for each avataram name, concluded with a grand korvai in Hindolam.

Overall a wonderful kucheri put up by this extremely talented/experienced team...Kudos to each one of them...

SR will always remain the uncrowned QUEEN of Carnatic Music !

Nice song list though Bowlai and atana are the usual items from her
HK and Dhanyasi are good ragas for submain. Any of these alapana are good.
I think she choose HK. I have heard her once in MA. Thanks for the list.
I read about the ragamalika ragas in another thread. May be you can add the
ragamalika raga list from that thread to here for completion of the list.
Your title is great, from an ardent fan of Sudha

Latha, your title made me smile :)=) you must indeed be a great fan of Sudha Raghunathan but thanks so much for the detailing...all of us go attend, enjoy or get critical and stop with it. Its fora such as these that also give us a responsibility that along with the musicians, we as serious rasikas also need to contribute to the growth and preservation of this divine music form.

Sastrigalji, as per your listing of the Dasavathara ragas under Arunaji's thread, the correct raagas for Krishna - Priyadarshini, Kalki - Sindhu Bhairavi, Dasavatharam - Madhyamvati.

I looked forward very much to this concert because it was Vaikunta Ekadasi and I was curious to see what the artist had to deliver. I dont think I was disappointed at all.

The onset was with Adi Talam, misra nadai, the take off was four matras from samam - matsya kurma, varaha, narasimham vamana mampahi. The Arudhi kaarvai was five. The pallavi line was Parasu srirama baladeva, krishna kalki dasavathara.

Because of the ekadasi fervour, maybe, it was an absolute feeling of sanctification and divinity. Music indeed takes one closer to God and the choices of Sudha Raghunathan for the evening was apt I must say.It was definitely a chaste and pristine rendering. I was only hoping she would not close the concert with the usual Brahmam okkate or vishamakara which all comes in an effort to please in the thukkada section. One would not want that in venues like Academy where we believe we are catered with complete classiscism. Thankfully the musician concluded minus these.

After trikalam, she switched to misra chaapu thalam (viloma chaapu) and then sang swaras at ten different points for the ten different avataras with ten different raagas. It was really commendable that not one went wrong in the speed and tempo with which she took off. Then she did a reverse in the same ten raagas and sang a korvai in hindolam!!!

On CRamas point of any relationship with raaga and avatars, I have a feeling it could be a kind of an affinity to her Gurus Paarkadal alai mele..close to that dasavathara which MLV made immortal!! Especially the shanmugapriya and kedar gowla. If Sudha is accessible or available, I would love to clarify this with her post concert as I am curious about it myself!!

I heard till Bairavi. Lovely rendering of Bowli & Hamirkalyani kritis. I have heard Brinda singing Venkatashaila Vihaara. That is a different experience with some unusual sangatis. I wish leading artists include atleast one or two such Kritis in concerts .
Devi brova Samayamidhe - Chintamani
Jambupathe -Yamunakalyani -Gayatri Venkat sang very well.
Mayamma - Ahiri (You can go on adding)

Probably you have to visit the MA on the day of her concert.
When you ask for ticket, you get only balconies.
When you come for concert, you see Q starting at the third level of the
building (balcony has two floor entrances) and extends to parking lot or beyond
in the ground floor. This is despite the fact that her concert at MA
consists of a purist song list. I somehow feel she has the max
dedicated fans in chennai earned over a period of time compared
to Sanjay, TMK, Aruna, Nithyasree.

rajaglan , Very well said ..

First of all being in the Carnatic music world for almost 30 years is a big thing ... still performing and retaining the #1 spot for almost two decades is her greatest achievement which shows her sincerity and hardwork.

Hats off to this great Vidushi .. We really salute you !

rajaglan/jaysriks - the emphasis (and the crux of the question) I think was on the 'uncrowned' part. :P

Hi,

Yes, why not 'crowned'. For her ardent fans she is crowned queen.

And I only have fav artists' in my list (from MMI to MBMK). So I am not
a fan of any artist and hence unable to explain that part.

May be the sangeetha kalanidhi award is being referred.

Must have been a real treat! Venkata saila vihara is a Subbaraya sastry composition.
Sari Evvaramma is one of my personal favourites. Wonderful songs list!
Even tha Narada gana sabha concert's song list was very good.
Its good to see the updates about Sudha Ragunathan in the forum

Rajaglan, yes, I think Sudha truly is the crowned queen for her fans and rasikas alike. I watched the scene post the Academy concert. She was just surrounded and there was group of 40 students from Erode who could not be accomodated inside for want of space and were waiting outside until she finished and then went beserk when they saw her.

It needs to be commended that there is still so much of interest in the art form and the artist in such tender minds. There were children who had collages of her pictures and paraphernalia and clamouring to get autographs and pictures. Sudha does have tremendous energy to go thro all this post a strenous concert. Long live Carnatic music and may it spread to all corners and may the tribe increase...India's USP indeed!!
