Her music is like her - gentle and elegant. She flowed through the first half with a captivating Dhanyasi and Kamboji Alapanai. I wondered why she sang an elaborate ragam for kamboji to be followed by a small song in Tisra jathi Triputha thalam by Thyagaraja plus no thani? It was all revealed when she sang the scintillating RTP-beautiful ragam and good thanam, great pallavi and she flicked in and out of the various ragams in the KS. Just masterly.
I have heard Embar K play and play well for others but these two bring out the best in each other. He was in fine form (Dhanyasi & Kapi were amazing) and so were the two percussionists who played their thani exceedingly well for the misra nadai. There was perfect balance all around in the main artiste and accompanists plus the acoustics were great. Best concert this season for me!

Yes, clearly the best concert in the season! If there is a best RTP award, it should go to BJ's kApi RTP! The whole concert was just so soulful and serene. Clearly, she is the one of the best artistes today. And, blessed are the ones who attended this best concert. I am sure there will be squabbles for buying the CD when it is released by Charsur and others.

Just because it is normally sung in Ahiri, it is not a crime to sing it in yamunAkalyani. To my ears, the rendition was flawless and fine. How do you know that nArAyana theerthar composed this in Ahiri? Some say he did and some say he did not. Whatever raga it is in, let us learn to appreciate it. I wonder how we appreciate songs like yaaroo ivar yaaroo when sung in bhairavi when the original was composed in sAveri?CRama wrote:Veeksheham is a beautiful composition which is normally sung in the raga ahiri. Many people start from the anupallavi-Sakshath madana koti. I wonder why the raga should be changed in this song. The artiste can show all her manodharmam in the RTP but not by changing the raga of an established song.

Narayana Thirthar belongs to the Bajanai Sampradayam and thousands of Bhagavathars of several generations with more devotion to KRISHNA have sung it in Ahiri before BJ and will continue to sing it in Ahiri after BJ also. To many of us it will be hurting to the eyes and cannot learn to appreciate to see the Lord of Thirumala in the alankaram of Raymond Suits and tie mounted on a Toyota wearing Goggles during the Brahmotsavam. To many of us it will be jarring to the ears to hear Vishnu Sahasranamam set to kharaharapriya though it cannot be labeled as crime. How do you know is a dangerous question and would not find an assertive answer even for Veda Gita or even in matters of paternity in Advanced western societies.
In the interest of our culture it is better not to dabble with bhajanai sampradayam which has started stealing the place of many musical concerts in our Sabhas. Protagonists of Arts for Art’s sake can, aided by their immense widvath and creative urge, compose their own lyrics and sing it in their own way and their ardent fans who shower four times Best in four lines can ensure their eternal transmission to future generations.

The ragas of many songs have undergone changes over a period of time- especially of purandaradas, annamacharya, narayana theertha etc. But to a seasoned rasika whoh has heard music for the entire life, a song in one particular raga is getting registered. If it is sung in another raga it cannot be relished. A tunesmith can take a diferent song, unexplored song and tune to his /her liking. Why to meddle with an existing tune
In this context I would mention that majority of the music listners would not have heard Nanati braduku until MSS sang that in Revathi. Even revathi became popular only after that song. That is the sheer majic of MSS. After that I heard doyen Balamuralikrishna singing that song in Mukhari (Icannot even hear any Mukhari in that version). Fully admitting to his vidwat and his populairty, the mukhari version is not at all enjoyable.

I agree with Karaharapriyam 100% and I also agree that the concert was soulful and pleasing.
I believe we as rasikas, ought to enjoy what is being offered and evaluate how well the piece was presented consistent with the spirit of the composition and not get too wrapped up in the authenticity of the composer!!
Anyway as a person who has held such dogmatic views in my youth I can quite understand WHY some rasikas might feel differently if they believe the composition was "tampered" with!!!!
