The Kalyana Vasantham RTP made up for everything. Although the Sankarabaranam was great, it was the K-Vasantham Thanam that stole the show. Sanjay was coughing frequently and that was not a pretty sight for die-hard MASTER fans like me. But to his credit each time he struggled with cough, he came back with some stunning Sangathis.
Vocal: Sanjay Subrahmanyan
Violin: Nagai the great
Mridangam: Mannargudi Sir
Kanjira: Gopalakrishnan
1. Sarasadu Ninne - Saveri - Varnam - Kotthavasal Venkatarama Iyer
2. Abhimaaana Mennedu - Begada - Patnam Subramania Iyer - S
3. Sabapathikku - Aboghi - Gopalakrishna Bharathi - AS
4. Dheena rakshaga Ninnu - Ahiri - Tanjavur Ponnaiah - AS
5. Dakshinamoorthe - Sankarabaranam - Dikshitar (Main) - ANS
6. RTP - Kalyana Vasantham
Pallavi: "Thiru Muruga Gurupara Kumara Guha Vaa" - Ragamalika swarams in Behag, Darbari Kaanada
7. Maalasai - Jhonpuri - Tirupugazh
Overall a good concert, but could have been much more magical if had been a 3 hour concert. Nagai Muralidharan is par excellence. If he teams up with Sanjay it is a bound to be a great concert. His violin playing is magical. Sanjay did some fast paced pallavi singing and altered his talam for successive words of the pallavi and Nagai was always there.

Is he singing Kalyana Vasantham for the first time ?
Thyagaraja is missing. May be manasunilpa for abhogi or enter in to nadaloludai after RTP.
Thank you for the balanced review from the fan.

Sanjay yesterday was in absolute control of the stage and presented his concert with imagination and vaiety with the right emphasis of the emotive content. This concert transported many to an era of old style approach to Carnatic concerts.
His output for Dakhsinamurte in Sankarabharanam is something that will be remembered for a long time to come. Neraval at Sukahdhara pravrutte swaagnaa nanivritte was soaked with emotion and imagination.
Similarly the Taanam was the piece de resistance, Complete madhyamakala, from start to end , presenting a wide range of the multiple combinations in all octaves, absolutely traditional format.
The pallavi was a creative venture with the words spaced out ascending from three , four , five and then descending similarly. The variety of speed variations and the keezhkaalam he sang for the pallavi was high order laya workmanship, but never once was the melody of the phrase lost.

I attended the concert--it was a disappointment but I would "cut"Sanjay some slack!! A voice like his is not designed for a succession of 15/16 concerts over a 2/3 week period' Organisations pressure may have forced him to accept so many engagements.
The concert he gave in NY @ the Flushing Hindu temple was far superior to the MA concert(one of the forumites had reviewed the concert).
On the point about not having a Thygaraja krithi,I fully agree with the general complaint against Sanjay on this issue--three years back @ NGS(I remember Karaikudi mani accompanying him) he scrupulously omitted Thyagaraja kritis and if I remember right he sang one Syama Sastry krithi.
Ofcourse all our laments and caterwauling in this forum do not make any impression on him--I understand that he does not care for much of the critics or reviews.
History over the past 100 years since the trinity passed away tells us that there have been several attempts by many musicians to defy the conventional wisdom(singing the trinity compositions) and establish their own patterns--all of them ended up in failure.
So if Sanjay is trying to send a message to all of us that CM can exist outside of the trinity,he is entitled to his 'crusade" but I doubt if there would be followers!!
None of the above detracts from a musician of extraordinary musical prowess, repertoire(despite the lack ofa proper sustained guru save a few years with Calcutta Krishnamurthy Bhagavathar) and the lack of a not-too-friendly voice.
On this subject of Thyagaraja kritis and the Tamil Isai movement there is a GNB anecote which I will narrate in my next post!!
Getting late for a New Year "bash"!!

It is interesting to see people dra various comments based on one concert. I am sure artists chjoose congs based in audience and it probably was some request from organizers? Another theory I have is he wants to popularize various other composers like he has done in past - mayavaram viswanatha sastrigal, dandapani desigar, tamil rrinity on jaya tv shows etc. Afdter all music is music. I always wonder why e do not have many composers these days. Will there be another thyagaraja in near future?

This fixation with Thyagaraja in a concert list is over rated. So what if there is no T, SS or MD? If there is a Patnam or a Swati or a Tanjore Quartet or a Maha Vaidhyanatha Sivan to compensate, that is fine.
I can understand the outcry if an Academy concert only had unknown contemporary composers. But he sang a concert with just 5 compositions, an RTP and a varnam and the composers he sang included Patnam, Gopalakrishna Bharathi, Tanjore Quartet, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Arunagirinathar. For crying out loud, these are not Madurai Krishna, Madras Venugopal, Delhi Krishnayya, Bangalore Natarajan and Trivandram Omanakutty.
Mind you, I am not being defensive of Sanjay's music. He or his music does not need my defense. I just lament the screwed sense of proportion that some people tend to have on this forum, which I have been reading for a while.
This was an awesome concert with the kalyanavasantham being outstanding. I heard from a musician friend that Sanjay has got the Yogam Award from the Academy for his concert. This is richly deserved for a wonderful concert by a wonderfully talented contemporary musician. The man has got guts and the vidwat to go with it.
Someone in this thread said that through his Academy concert, he thumbed his nose at this forum and his critics. More power to him. I prefer listening to a musician with a view than to one who has been brow-beaten by critics.

Not too sure which concert you were listening to, but the kanjira artist played the pallavi line perfectly every time, especially during the trikalam. Nor did he sit idly, in fact the mrudangist encouraged him to play every other round and during both trikalams (which he basically led as he had managed to grasp the pallavi much better). And the pallavi itself only has tisram and chatusram alternating more or less from the first half to the second half.grsastrigal wrote: Kalyana Vasantham, he tried to put all his efforts to present trikala-pallavi but forgot to communicate with the accompanists. Result-Kanjira vidhwan did not know what to do and sitting idle most of the time turing his rendition. After I returned I played the RTP and found even Sanjay misses talam few times where Nagai got it right. 45 minutes Tani was a treat otherwise.
What 45min tani avartanam are you talking about? The real tani wasn't that long, and if you're implying that the pallavi itself was a tani avartanam, then I think you're way off base and should go check that recording of yours again.

1. Why the fixation with T?
2. I am just appalled at someone trying to take "their desparation" on Sanjay by stating some "fertile imaginery" motivations to Sanjay not singing T songs. In Bhakthi there is no comparison b/w T's Rama Bhakthi and GB's TILLAI Bhakthi.
3. Please understand that a good voice is not a pre-requisite for becoming a great CM singer. Please peep into the past. Sugary voice is infact a bane to CM, since people with sugary voice equate their concerts into Bhajan sessions.
4. Sanjay was unwell and he tried his valiant best to present a good concert and he did deliver. The KV Thanam was just brilliant.
5. The most irritant part of that post was deriding that Sanjay has had no great training (except from Calcutta KS).
6. I would request the person to list out who are his favourite among the current generation. May be we will get some clue.
7. There are people like me who will do anything to attend a Sanjay concert and keep listening to Sanjay, immaterial of whether he sings T or S or D.

Its difficult to do justice to the trinity compositions in a 3 or 3.5 hour concert - forget a 2.5 or 2 hour concert. Atleast attempt should be made to sing compositions of two of them if not three. The influence of the trinity to music is undeniable, and the likes of Dandapani Desikar or Narasimha Bhagwathar are not in the same league (no offense meant).
Its fine if an artist is passionate about promoting tamizh krithis of these composers. But bottomline, only when someone takes up grand compositions of the trinity or even composers like P. Sivam, Muthiah Bhagwathar, etc, justice is done to the raga bhava and evokes the appropriate emotion as intented by the composer. This satisfaction is difficult to be matched and its too much to expect the same from the tier 2 composers

As per all the posters in this thread , sanjay had voice problems and has not given the best, with that information I am surprised with this announcement.chakkaniraja wrote: I heard from a musician friend that Sanjay has got the Yogam Award from the Academy for his concert. We should stop nitpicking and take a broader approach.
This bit about no Tyagaraja song !! He gave a Patnam song , Tyagaraja's sishya !!
Also this thing on voice problems. This weather most of them have cough, artists and others alike. Lets us not get hyper about all this and pick on small issues, like missing the woods for the trees.
Every concert will have a combination of good and average elements. What we all know is that the overall good is what prevails. In that sense, Sanjay's concert had many things to write home about and was in a class of its own. Well deserved Award from the Academy.

I agree with this statement 100%. It is impossible to judge a concert by the list.mohan wrote:I think some people look at lists too much. Looks like Sanjay didn't sing a prati madhyama raga either, but who cares if the concert on the whole sounds good.
I dont think sanjay planned this concert so that could possibly the reason for no thyagaraja krithi.
Sometimes the artist might even take up two allied ragas just as a challenge

Possibly sanjay did plan to sing thyagaraja krithi , possibly an end one , utsava sampradayA . Not singing T krithi is fine but I prefer it always. By the way he ended with pavamAna(or what else he ended) right which is a T krithiNo nitpicking there.sivapriya wrote:We should stop nitpicking and take a broader approach.

When it comes to awards like best performer (that is given to one out of 30 artists), we have to take everything into consideration , approximating that every one has cough because of weather does not resonate with me , overall reading all the posts he was bit way off than his usual best is a key objective viewpoint that has come here. This Award is given where the measuring point is only the window of the concert.Again I am not saying just because one coughs one should not get it. I am coughing non stop for the last few days with a steady century not out temperature

Congrats to all artists who brave the lousy weather and perform non stop.

Sanjay according to me is not a good artiste and i will write down the points in detail and also provide counter arguements for that.
1)Sanjay is not singing raga alapanam these days.hes more like spitting these days thu thu thu thi thu thi and stuff.and that spit is falling on my face.
2)sanjay is trying a lot of brighas and if you listen to them they are more like slipping in tamizh they call it vazhukkindu paadarathu.i understand that brighas don't require seasoned voices(atleast according to what he says)
3)hes saying voice is not important and since last year i believe he was into tanjore kalyanaramans music saying avar appadi paadinaaru ippadi paadinaaru and kalyanaramans only goal in life was that voice culture and voice range must be regarded seriously for carnatic music.is'nt that hypocracy?
4)and most of the time hes gobbling the swaras singing it like giving it a vidwans touch but unfortunately a musician can clearly see that hes just creating a maya for all his listeners thinking hes doing something tough.and we all know he known to do it he sang seethapathe naa malasu naa in one recording of his.
5)about trinity compostions i don't have anything to say.one song would'nt do any bad but however i will let him go scot free on that.
6)hes singing with a cough but he sang well.see this is what comes out of being hardcore fans.they simply cannot accept one criticism or defect about their supposedly cult hero.everybody old and young artists are affected with cough or other maladies associated with this weather.this is not a valid reason.i will not accept this.
all these arguements about sanjay i have posted are my opinion about him and also the opinion of a majority of musicians i have come in contact with.not lisiting their names.
now i see some people have blurted nonsense here in this forum.not attacking them but am going to really point out their errors.
sridirect said sugary voiced people turn their concerts into bhajanas and such utter nonsense.point is good voiced artists like tanjore kalyanaraman, seshagopalan and balaji shankar only sang pure carnatic music which i am sure members would'nt even understand because otherwise such statements would have never been typed here.
chakkaniraja inspite of saying a lot of times that sanjays music does'nt need promotion is actually promoting him further more.and i guess a lot of other members also follow suit.
in the end there are many other artists and even young artists who are actually doing better jobs and maintaining the carnatic music to a reasonable level sanjay was a good singer but now he has become a gimmicks master.if a youngster does something like him everyone will trash him but if whatever sanjay does, says, acts or mimics it would be taken to heart and praised.
i am not accusing my felow forumites or bloggers its just that i am trying to point them about a lot of things they are missing.as a moral i am not anybodys fan i listen to everybody and appreciate the best qualities of everybodys music even sanjays.but i am not a loudmouth and say dumb unnecessary things about music in general or about artists(i am directly referring to what he said about instrumental music need not be followed).if he was quiet and doing all these things i would'nt mind.but he was saying a lot of crappy things.
and thats when i lost my temper.
now for the obvious question why i did not write all these things earlier.a very close friend of mine was not allowing me to write he insisted i leave this issue but when soo much hype hype was created on the net i decided to let the balloon burst thats all.
i also realise that this will be my last post and that i would be kicked out by sanjay fans just like how m.g.r fans did'nt like anything being said about him.last but not the least i would like to thank everybody for providing the space for me to write here in this democracy which i think is turning into hypocracy.thank you.

I agree with one half of the first point and I reject all others. I don't like the THU THI stuff. I wish Sanjay would drop it.
In my opinion, Sanjay is much like Madurai Somu with better clarity of sahitya and bigger repertoire of songs, and I love Madurai Somu. So, I might be biased.
I have great admiration for Sanjay's sincerity in rendering his music, his selections (particularly the number of vivadi ragas he brings out), his creativity, and his expressive singing (bhavam).
Nobody will ever say good voice is not a plus. But, listeners for a whole century have filtered this out in their profound understanding of what is good music. You think MMI had a good voice? You think MDR had a great voice? Did we not look beyond the nasality of SSI? You think Kumara Ghandarva had a good voice? You think Rod Stewart has a clear voice like Billy Joel? Discerning music lovers listen beyond the basic voice, beyond occasional gimmicks, and not criticize whose compositions were missed or what ragams were ignored.
So, let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

This is with reference to the post of Mr Babaji. I am obliged to reply since he had refered to my post.
1. I did say that a sugary voice is NOT at all a pre-requisite for CM. And I stand by that. And when I said that a lot of people with SUGARY voices have turned their concerts into Bhajans I was OBVIOUSLY not refering to stalwarts like TNS and others. I will not bring in names of the artistes, but it is for Mr Babaji to find out.
SANJAY IS A MASTER and he rules - Why ?
1. Sincerity
2. Bhavam
3. A large collection of songs from different composers (look he is not obsessed with T or D or S or any other alphabet)
4. Sanjay does possess a great voice (BTW what is a sweet voice, I dont understand???)
5. His brigas and a few flashy techniques does add a charm to his concert and I go just for that.
6. He has a mind of hiw own and goes by his STRONG conviction
7. He has openly declared that he is comfortable singing Tamizh songs for obvious reasons (being his mother tongue) and what is wrong with that.
8. Open throated singing and not some MUMBLING
9. HE DOES NOT USE A 120-PAGE NOTEBOOK IN FRONT OF HIM TO LOOK AT THE LYRICS AND SING which many of the so called TOP ARTISTES do these days. To understand, memorise and sing many new krithis without any reference monitor is sincerity. HE DOES ALL THIS WITHOUT COMPRIMISING ON THE BHAKTHI BHAVAM.
SANJAY IS A MASTER and he rules - Why ?

sridirect:
you are definitely angry at me because i am finding errors in his music thats why you have put this preposterous 120 page booklet thing here.nobody does that.people use poapers not 120 page booklets.and what is wrong with that.when a guy can memorize a song and come and sing a song like
SEETHAPATHE NAA "MALASU" NAA and get away with it.whats wrong with people using papers to just improve the confidence level of the concert knowing the lyrics are atleast there.
i am now thinking if sridirect or bilahari is actually sanjay in disguise.because i am in a gentlemanly fashion typing just errors of his music.and i have made it particularly clear that it is not an insult it is more of criticism but you people just cannot take it that way.
Dear forumites rasikas musicians and students.for quite sometime no defects have been mentioned without sugarcoating about sanjay and i wanted to make sure that this forum was all about seriousness towards carnatic music.if you think i am just mouthing off don't you think i ghave nothing better to do than this.
nandri and vanakkam to all.
And by the way i never knew my writings had a tone attached to it.in general i am not a very toned person.

its not that i am mouthing off.i just wanted to be right.
Sridirect, sridharan,VK,bilahari.i have no axe against all of you.don't think i am going soft.what i have written stays and am not going to change a word of what i have written.as long as there is truth in it it holds good..
Sanjay was an excellent singer.there are two who are dominating the field right now and i always thought of sanjay as being more to my liking initially because there was a time when gimmicks was less and with his voice he was trying hard and i appreciated that.also the introduction of vivadhi in his concerts is a boon to the ragas itself for the fact that if it gets noticed in a sellout crowd of his more talented youngsters with 2 to 3 is a crowd artists can also try vivadhi.so i appreciate it.
but since say the last three to four years he became something like M.G.R saying whatever he likes but it was not only him there are others who are in line this is hurting a lot of talented artists and also to a musician these things that he does and gets away with and says and goes around with is like crucifixion for musicians.thats why i thought i will set the record straight.nothing personal against the rasikas.i want to make sure that everyone realises that.i know sanjay would be reading this.let his ego take the better of it and leave the worst thats all

Bilahri is NOT Sanjay in disguise since Arasi knows Bilahari and I am not Sanjay. Sanjay does not need any disguise; he is a class apart. We are all die-hard Sanjay fans and we derive "real pure bliss" through his high quality music. PERIOD.
The funniest part of Babaji's latest posting is that he agrees to almost all my points and then either says "everybody does it" or "many stalwarts in the past has done it". So what is he really trying to say, if at all he is trying to say something, other than the main objective being Sanjay bashing.
If according to Babaji, Sanjay is doing something that past stalwarts have done; then it is great.
Babaji's post (as a response to my post) is a classic case of contradictions galore.

as they say in tamil kolaiya tharkolaiya mattharrudhu, the sanjay supersub(sriDirect) has supposedly turned the tables on me i don't really understand what contradiction i did.i was being clear right from the start.
I don't like sanjays music because hes doing e.t.c e.t.c and e.t.cetera.thats what i wrote but our friend immediately replied with typical punchliners for vijays films like naan adicha thanga maate naalu maasam thoonga maate namely
1)sincerity2)bhavam3)bhakthi4)paravasam5)patantharam6)guts7)tamizh vazhga and stuff like that
for which i provided my valuable inputs and even after reading the entire thing i wrote, hes saying i agree with him or i am contradicting myself then ramayanam muzhukka kaettu sitaikku raman chittappa (listening to entire ramayana saying rama is sitas stepfather) madri irrukku.because i have written all the points so that a 5th grader can understand what i have written.
please don't try monkey tricks on me.it won't work if you like to provide real counter arguements to what i did to yours i'll write to your satisfaction otherwise this is just another sanjay rasikar manram issue and this will continue on and on.

i see so you will accept whatever fiction i say is it,because facts about a particular person does'nt concern you.thanks for atleast accepting that they were indeed facts about sanjay.sashtangama kaalla vizharaen.Member_First wrote:babaji,
We do not accept your 'so called' facts. Sanjay is numero uno today and highly talented and that too without any blemish.
sanjay is numero uno i agree not in music but in speaking things without even thinking twice about it.i can only believe it with fans like these.thats what hes good at.see what i mean arasi how many fans and fanatics there are for sanjay promoting him as numero uno and stuff as if others are at the bottom.
without any blemish c'mon you are kidding me.

babaji, I like Sanjay's music but I am not in the same fan league as sridirect and others and in that context a couple of points.. It is fine to talk about your opinions of artists. And I even grant to you that in this forum Sanjay related posts are skewed towards favorable posts ( that does not mean there were never any negative posts ).
Having said that, I think your issue with Sanjay is really not about his music but more about something he said. Let us be clear about it so there is no confusion. Not that you do not have any issues with his music, but it is easy to read that into the under current of your criticism since you have pretty much focussed on that in the last few posts. Now, let us know what is it that he said that was not agreeable to you. Only the public comments that he made and not anything private you may have access to. ( Let us set aside for now the aspects of your criticism regarding his music on stage ).

I would like to add that Babaji's posts will be more readable if they are edited for grammar and punctuation.

Renaming the symptom to "verbal, grammatical and punctuation diarrhoea".
Jokes apart, the real problem with the various posts of babaji is that he had nothing to talk about the academy concert, the merits and demerits of the concert and what he liked and disliked. Instead the very first post started off with bashing Sanjay as a person, what he talks in his interviews, his views on various topics etc etc. The agenda was very clear right from the beginning.
Yes I am die-hard fan of Sanjay but the real point here is this is a thread to discuss the academy concert (its + and -) and not someone's personal "bashing" agenda.

CM has given us the pleasure of listening to the gems composed by M, T, SS, PS, PD, HMB and more. They obviously were the giants and the likes of ARI, SSI, GNB, MMI, KVN, MDR, DKP, DKJ, TNS, LGJ, TNK, Smt Vedavalli gave us the pleasure of listening to this music we love so much. Sanjay has a long way to reach the heights scaled by the above. So lets get some perspective and move on.

quote=Ramasubramanian M.KI attended the concert--it was a disappointment but I would "cut"Sanjay some slack!!
Very true. It sometimes is very sad that senior artistes whose concerts we so much look forward to land themselves up in such health situations. Giving the benefit of doubt on the unannounced throat ailments, they can also ensure safeguarding their voices by not straining themselves and confining themselves to lesser number of concerts so that the output is qualitative and enjoyable. Cos we look so much forward to the 3 hours prioritizing our works wanting it to be the best of experiences with our favourite artistes. The disappointment gets too much.
Jayashree must be really complimented on the way she organizes herself with her concerts taking care of her voice and the expectations.
Mannargudi Sir was absolutely brilliant and such a pleasure to watch, with his amicable body language, instant appreciation of fellow artistes on stage..

Inspite of not including the Trinity compositions and an irritating cough, Sanjay's musicality came shining through. I got value for money and thats what matters. In the RTP, he missed the Trikalam-he apologised to the mridangist, came back and did it again. I admire the humility and confidence of the man!

Dear rasikas and musicians
My intention was not to create any commotion or group wars among rasikas. If my language was poor i apologize and in future i will correct and also connect with the rasikas in their styles.
For most of posts, the material i have written is quite the same with a few elaborations and descriptions here and there. But right from the start my view is clear.
This is not sanjay "bashing" that i am doing. As a matter of fact like i have already mentioned i was a fan of sanjay.I have seen him as a young boy taking turns in singing at the thygaraja vidwat samajam with great interest and "even then" i noticed that he was a very talented musician.
I have been following his music since the late nineties to early 2000.Its just off late i think his direction has some faults which needs some reviewing. The points I have mentioned might not be grammatically written with punctuation because when you are writing to put the exact thoughts you thought, you would hardly worry about grammer because lets all accept the fact that this forum is not intended to be
AN ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION about who has written most eloquently and uniquely.
Its more about Our Music and Our Views. And on that note i would like to finish by saying that i am not promoting sanjay by writing negatively as Sri sureshvv has mentioned.whether i promote him or not he has all his fans and the audience who promote him.Rather i would promote not only sanjay but every other artist both established and up and coming.i will not stick with one artist but encourage everybody and also if the need arises critic everybody.Nobody is exempt from criticism including me.(which i am getting here anyway)
From now on I will take Grammer Medicine and Punctuation tablets so that this forum does not suffer from my verbal diarrhoea.thanks for all the feedback and thanks to sanjay as well.
Nandri vanakkam.

You mean all of those "musicians/noise makers" who are left behind (out of the frame) by BOLT ! I am not surprised at losers' laments !babaji wrote:Sanjay according to me is not a good artiste and i will write down the points in detail and also provide counter arguements for that.
<SNIP>
all these arguements about sanjay i have posted are my opinion about him and also the opinion of a majority of musicians i have come in contact with.not lisiting their names.
