How lucky one rasika can get ? Two great concerts in two successive evenings. A super concert by Bombay Jayashri on 30th and a magnificent one to follow by none other than Sudha. I am starting this post to get input from fellow rasikas.

She was accompanied by:

Embar Kannan - Violin
Neyveli Skanda Subramanian - Mridhangam
R.Raman - Morsing

She sang an excellent Vasaspathi. She squeezed in a RTP after an elaborate multi ragam alapana followed by a kriti. Subramanian and Raman rose to the occasion by tailoring in a delightful tani with time restraint. She sang a couple of more songs including Katrinilae varum geetham and wished the audience a great 2010.

I am sure fellow rasikas will give more details.

Wish all Rasikas of our family a great 2010.

Babu, agreed that it was a fine concert on new years eve. A correction...Raman was not playing (Moharsingh). It was Gopalkrishnan on the ganjira.

Also, what struck me just before the rendering of Chandrachooda was that Sudha spun four raagas which was truly mind boggling -Khamas to Todi to Sunaadavinodini to shankarabharanam...In the pidi in the raaga sunaadavinodini, she sang it exactly like devadideva. I guess it was to let the rasikas know immediately what raaga it was. Its these twists and turns so much within the norms that makes carnatic music so much enjoyable for the rasikas and aspirants alike. My niece who had come down from the US and who is an aspiring carnatic musician was simply overawed and i must say, rather motivated at the capacity..

Another experience that would want to share with the formites here is something simple but what struck me so much.

In the row ahead was a special child accompanied by her mother/guardian. A few rasikas closer were trying to click pictures amidst the concert. The child who seem to be enjoying the music was so agitated when the flash came on that she muttered under her breath. When again the neighbour attempted to click, she held the hand and gesticulated in her own broken communication..a firm and vehement NO. I was quite taken up by the commitment to the music and the discipline that she could maintain, which eludes us at times making us insensitive to the artists on stage. It left some thoughts with me behind...while people in groups get up and go away during thani, here is a lesser endowed being not even wanting to have the lens as distraction.

Thanks Shalu for your input and the correction. I went by the program guide given by the Saba, blindly regarding the artists! The concert was exceptionally good and I enjoyed all her selections, especially Chandrachooda and the RTP. A great concert and will be remembered for a long time.
