What a mindblowing concert it was !. Great way to start the new year listening to this Artiste.

Smt. Sudha Ragunathan @ Koothambalam, Kalakshetra 6.30 PM - 9.15 PM.

Accompanied by Sri. Embar Kannan on violin , Sri Pathri Satish Kumar on Mridangam, Sri. Raman on Mohrsing the occassion being the Music Festival @ Kalakshetra.

There was a brief introduction about the artiste making the whole atmosphere divine.

She started off with a Dharu Varnam in Khamas (Which is mostly used in the dance schools) and apt at the venue.

The next krithi Raka Sasivadhana in the raga - Tukka was good which was made popular by her grand guru Sri.G N Balasubramanian(GNB). She explained the meaning of this song. Though the krithi is soulful it is GNB who brought this into the kutchery format in the fast tempo.

Next was a very moving piece in Kannada Bangala , Renuka devi samrakshithoyam.

Entharo Mahanubhavu in sri ragam was sung with great bhavam and executed at right pace.

Shubha Panthuvarali aalapana was very soothing and the krithi sung being Sri Sathyanarayanam. She took the neraval at "Matsya koorma varahaathi dasavathara prabhavam".

The Rama Rama Rama Seetha in vasantha was a peppy item.

After a brisk rendition she settled to a relaxed exposition of the mohanam raga and it was brilliantly rendered and the song taken up was Jagadheeshwari Krupai puri. This is the krithi of Tiruvarur Ramaswami pillai and it is very rarely heard in the concert circle nowadays.

Then came the beautiful Javali in Behag Saaramaina of Swati Tirunal. This was rendered with absolute bhavam. She concluded the concert with a Thillana and Mangalam.

The accompanists were accomplished and involved and that made the big difference. Embar Kannan was too good . Percussionist gave a wonderful support and their thani was great.

The audio arrangements @ the auditorium were spectacular and this needs a special mention.

Overall a Wonderful evening of music by this talented artiste blessed with a melodious voice.

The daru varNam in question, mAtE malayadhvaja pANDya sanjAtE, by Sri HKMB is not a staple for dancers - I have seen it a couple of times in a dance performance, but have heard it many more times in vocal concerts - from Smt. Sudha Raghunathan as well - before. PadavarNams are the staple for dancers.
