Carnatic music kutcheri season and cricket matches have one thing in common, at times just like how tailender batsmen score more runs , similiarly when the seaon nearly ends , the slog over concerts are exceptional. I wanted to hear this musician for one main reason, he was given a slot in academy despite he being not in concert circuit . I know for sure he is based out of US (i think memphis, some one can confirm)

This concert was organized by bhagwan ramanar trust , shriram sang with ramana maharishi in mind where he sang few numbers and this was my first concert of him .Shriram has semmangudish touch , sangathis come very easily and he sang almost all numbers except one in a consistently high quality.

The start was sparkling with a very brief alApanai , the hueness of mm gowlai in a little expressive krithi was a aha experience as his music just began to flow. I am personally a swara centric singer and shriram appears as a swara centric singer . The next dinamani was like semmangudi mama , i did not anticipate the neraval in this line and he sang entirely well.

A rare ramanar krithi (shriram told it was andavan picci or something and he was not sure )was the submain with a lovely spread of swaras . The quality dipped bit steeply in atana, slight slip in layam .The days best was his pallavi , a very very expressive style of packing sangathis in alApana was noteworthy and shriram sang beautifully, tAnam was metered with mridangam and shriram sang in a pure madhyama kAla fashion, pallavi was nice with another great round of swaras . The tukkadas were just two and both were very good

Sanjeev played well and lifted the concert, his play for the harikAmbOdhi was the best. The mridangist b . sivaraman was not perfect , his anticipation and speed needs to be much more , when shriram sang it was felt more, though for violin returns he picks up well. Overall sivaraman has to work on the speed .tani was brief .

Overall salem shriram (sishya of calcutta s krishnamurthi)is indeed a great singer , no second opinions. I and an elderly vidushi walked out , we both felt shriram can be little more open throated , he at times is holding his mouth bit too closed . But overall classicism is intense and sangathi quotient is very high and densely packed and timely delivered like a FEDEX ;) courier. This concert started 25 minutes late as another concert spilled over. I did hear rajna swaminathan playing mrudangam, donot know the names of the vocalist and violinist before.

Overall a very good to excellent concert for 1 hour and 45 minutes. It is india's loss that this musician has settled in US.

Nice review Rajeshnat. The Ramanar keerthanai and RTP in Gaurimanohari sound appealing...

Yes. The last I knew, Salem Sriram was based out of Memphis, TN.

Very apt analogy RajeshNat, as Memphis, TN is the headquarters for FEDEX.
