A nice concert by Sumitra Nitin of Bangalore. It is always heartening to hear a neraval upfront in the concert, i was personally thrilled because it was vara keerthana. subhapantuvarali alapana was very pleasant. Devagandhari keerthana was good, it was kind of new to me. I was writing down the lyrics while sumitra sang it, such was the clarity of singing, and also power of sahitya. Sumitra announced that it was a composition of a contemporary, arasi. Bilahari alapana was having nice sancharams, she touched tara panchamam. There were nice brigas also. Neraval and swaras were done in pallavi line itself, having 3 akshara eduppu. Post tani items were interesting (i request not to call them as tukkada, they can be called so in appropriate concerts, not for concerts like this). There was a ragamalika in madhyama sruthi, and a favorite of mine - arunachala kavi's ramayana ragamalika. Sri raga keerthana was impressive as other keerthanas.

YES!! So was I- although I had to leave for another concert in My;apore-- I guess so did Arasi-Arasi and myself with my wife and Sumitra's Mom Sujatha had a nice conversation over a cup of cofee--all of us including Sujatha thought the concert was @ 2 P.M. only to find that the concert was at 2:30 P.M.- even the Indian Fine Arts canteen guy was not ready to serve cofee as he explained he does not get many rasikas this early!!

Unfortunately the audience was thin to put it mildly. Sumitra(I have known her since she was a little kid) sang beautifuly with Bhavam--the hemavathy piece of Dikshithar(not Sreekanthimathim)was excellent.

None other than Semmangudi mama had commented and complimented Sumitra and her sister Nandu for their gnanam and sharpness in learning.

Need I add more!!

Sorry folks I was referring to Sumitra's IFA concert--my mistake--did not attend the BGS concert!!

kmrasika,
Sri gOdA nAyaki's composer is unknown, though it has been sung in Sumitra's family from her great grandmother's time or even from earlier times. It could have been someone in the family or from the village of SrivillipputtUr and of course, it is about ANDAL (gOdA) of the celebrated temple there.

CML,
Yes, I was there. I liked this concert the best of the ones I heard, but then again, I cannot make up my mind because her Krishna Gans Sabha concert was appealing in its own way. The Hemavathy she sang at IFA that Ramesh mentions was lovely too. She sang ADippADi dinam alaindirundAl-my rAgamAlikai at KGS. unnai ninaindE in NGS before I had reached Chennai.

Did any of DRS's compositions make it at any of the concerts this season?

To the best of my knowledge , I dont think DRS compositions have not been sung. I did see in the hindu , TS Sathyavati was mentioned , but did not find any DRS reference there.

CML,
I hope they are starting to sing his krutis in Karnataka now. His CDs came out just a few months ago. Performers take time. They do not venture into new krutis that easily. I hope Karnataka based singers who sing during the next season make it a point to include them in their concerts. I am sure once they try them out in the home terrain, they will feel confident to bring them elsewhere.
