Swathi Sangeethotsavam 2010 got off to a solemn start on 6 Jan 2010. Princess of the Travancore royal family made a short opening speech which was devoted to paying homage to veena vidwan Shri R. Venkataraman. Shri Rama Varma introduced the artistes of the day.

Sanjay Subramaniam (Vocal)
Nagai Muralidharan (Violin)
Pathri Satheesh Kumar (Mridangam)
Manjoor Unnikrishnan (Ghatam)
Payyanur Govindaprasad (Morsing)

The concert part started with the melodious strains of Reetigowla - Pari Paalayamaam. Next was a not-so-frequently-heard kriti in Nalinakanthi - Paalaya Sadhaa. Yet another Pari Paalaya figured after a detailed rendition of Pantuvarali raaga. The kriti had comprehensive dose of neraval and swarams. A second submain piece was presented in the form of Pari Paahi in Mohanam which too was embellished with copious neraval and swarams. The interlude before the main piece featured Aanandhavalli in Neelambari. Sanjay chose Saarasa sama mrudhu in Gowrimanohari as the main piece. The not-so-well-trained listeners had some difficulty because of the ambiguity in the alapana when shades of Kharaharapriya peeped in. Their doubts were unequivocally set at rest by Nagai Muralidharan's version of the alapana. I could hear some in the neighboring seats whispering "I told you so - that it is Gowrimanohari". Sanjay wisely avoided neraval for the kriti. The tani was brilliantly executed - the Kerala based Ghatam and Morsing artistes matched beat for beat everything offered by the seasoned Satishkumar. The concert was rounded off with Reena madaanuta in Behag and a thillana in Anandabhairavi.

Sanjay's voice did not show much of a damage from the volume of work in December. Some of us were happy hearing Nagai after a long gap. This year we could see a larger proportion of Westerners in the audience, all of them serious listeners.

Gowrimanohari main is rare.I have heard only thrice GM as main by

KVN - Sastry hall - 1985-86

NSG - Mayurvihar,N.Delhi - 1989

Ravikiran - Tatvaloka - 2008 Dec.(RTP)

Just for information the diff.between GM and Kar.Priya is only Ni and there are distinct phrases for both.During NSG's prog,I saw some people thinking it Keeravani, where the diff.is Dha.Anyway if U keep listening such confusions will vanish.

rajeshnat:

Panthuvarali and Mohanam earlier had a fairly heavy dose of neraval. Sanjay wanted to indulge in a complex sequence of adaippu swarams in gowrimanohari. With mridangam, ghatam and morsing, sufficient time had to be allotted for tani. Shri Rama Varma had promised the Westerners in the audience that they will enjoy the myriad sounds being created out of a simple clay pot without any active element to control the shruti. Public transport system in Trivandrum being poor, the concert had to be finished by 8.45 or 9 PM. I felt that Sanjay's decision was based on an optimizing algorithm under the above constraints. Hence I felt it was wise.

Shri Rama Varma is not active in the forum nowadays. I feel that it would be nice if the artists @ Swathi Sangeethotsavam are told to sing thanam for the main piece to the accompaniment of mridangam a la Navaratri mantapam concerts. Unlike the navaratri scheme, the choice of the main piece of course can be left to the artist.

Ganeshkant Sir,

Do you remember what song KVN Mama sang in gowrimanohari in that Sastri Hall concert?

Thanks,
Anil
