Hi,

Request for a word-to-word meaning of the song 'enna tavam sheidanai'.
Lyrics are mentioned below. Got it from one of Lakshman sir's post from an other forum. Thank you.

Radhika - it is a composition of Sri Sivan. I have translated (as padArtha) it for a friend in the past - give me some time to find and post it.

Here is some supplementary information on the song.

This is a song in tribute to YasOdA, the foster-mother of Krishna, glorifying her for her fortune in having to enjoy the pleasure of raising the baby Krishna as well as the power to punish the Lord when she so chose. It is simple in style but has a deep meaning. Usually, the Lord does not have a mother. In this instance, since Krishna was born to Devaki but transported to YasOdA to be raised by her, the implication is she must have earned so much merit to deserve such a boon as to be called "ammA"

Here is what I had provided my friend...I am sure there is a lot of overlap with the other postings:
Just as in the Catholic tradition the Virgin is revered as the mother of the son of God, so too in Hinduism are the mothers of rAma (kauSalya) and krishNa (yaSOdA/dEvaki) considered to be special and very fortunate women; in particular, yaSOdA is considered a very specially fortunate lady because she got to 'mother' the Lord without even giving birth to him. In this deceptively simple composition set to melodious kApi, Sri Sivan pays obeisance to yaSOdA as the supremely blessed one.

Oh pure and holy (punita) lady (mAdE), (what austerities did you perform to) obtain (pera) with effortless ease (eLidil) that which great ascetics like sanaka (sanakAdiya) [5] achieved (sAdhitadai) with great effort and suffering (varundi) after performing (Seidu) austere penance (tava yOgam)?

[1] engum niRai literally means one who is found in abundance (niRai) everywhere (engum)
[2] kayil Endi - carrying (Endi) a baby in one's arms (kayil)
[3] IrEzhu is the product of two (Iru) and seven (Ezhu)

[4] May refer to the episodes of the deluge in gOkul brought about by indra (the gOvardhana episode) and the episode where brahmA hides the cowherds in a cave for a whole year, only to return to gOkul and find that krishNa, through his mAyA had created the illusion that the cowherds were not lost - can make for a lovely sancAri or two in this caraNa
[5] The reference is to the four mind-born (manasija) sons of brahma called the kumAras - the oldest of whom was the sage sanaka, and the others are sanandana, sanAtana, and sanatkumAra, who were sages that performed very severe and austere penance to a formless brahman for many, many years before realizing that their path to salvation was through krishNa, and became one of the first gurus in the vaiSNava tradition - hence the reference to 'varundi sAdhidadai'

I recently bought a new CD by Kunnakudi BMK (Charsur) of Papanasam Sivan on Lord Krishna songs, where I heard this song. What I heard was probably the best rendition I ever heard. The whole CD was fantastic!
