Dear Rasikas,

Today is Tyagaraja Aradhana. Let us all join together in remembering the Great Trinity of Carnatic Music.

Indeed the Glory of his compositions is described as

Pallavi :

Ganarasa Murthi Tyagaraja Patalu, Tenela Tetalu |

( The songs of Ganarasamurti Tyagaraja are sweeter than Honey )

Anupallavi :

Aa Naluvakaina Tarama vaNi sogasulella pogadaga |

( Even the great Brahma would find in an auderous task to describe their ( songs ) beauty )

Charanam :

Manasuloni Nastika Bhavamulanu Marapinchu Bhaktiki Racha batalu|
Chanavuna Mudhulakaina sangeeta saramulu telupu muddu matalu ||

chanubalirugadala dolakanadedu Saraswatiki Aatalapodotalu |
Munulunuganani Sri Ramuni Manakanula gattinchu garadi aatalu ||

( The songs can indeed take us along the Rama marga, by driving away the atheistic feelings in us.
His pretty words can appeal even to the ignorant, and bring him into the fold of devine music.

Indeed his songs are like the milk flowing from Goddess Saraswati, and are the gardens where She enjoys.

His songs are capable of making the listener to actually see Lord Rama, whom even the Rishi's have difficulty in sighting )

This song was regularly being sung in Bidaram Mandiram during 1940-50's during Ramanavami and other festivities. It was a favourite of Shri Bidaram Krishnappa.

The song is in Raga KedaraGowla and set to vilamba Adi. Composed by Sangeeta Kalanidhi Rallapalli
Anantha Krishna Sarma.

Those of you who want to listen to the song , it can be heard here

I am glad to join the group of elite gana rasikas of the world. In a world where classical and traditional art is fast loosing popularity and sub standard fare often passes for genuine art , it is hertening to find that thousands of rasikas do still exist in the world and that they are actively engaged in exploring the intricacies of ganakala!

'Ganarasa Murthi Tyagaraja Patalu, Tenela Tetalu' is an excellent tribute to Tyagaraja Swami. Thanks metnanda for sharing the audio. I request musicians to propagate this mighty composition.

The song is just soaked in the Vidwat of Sri R Ananthakrishna Sarma and his devotion to the composer. I presume the voice in the audio is his. Pl confirm.

A similar tribute has been paid by Sri M D Ramanathan in his Kedaram Kriti 'Tyagaraja gurum Aaashraye' in Rupaka Talam.

Thyagaraja’s descendents
In the various biographies of Thygaraja it is mentioned that there are no direct descendents.
Recently I had met a purOhit, SrI. Pasupati, at Madurai, who informed me that he is related to the descendents of saint tyAgarAjA. The information he gave is as below.
tyAgarAjA’s gOtram is bharadvAja. He married pArvati @ sItAlaksmamma who died without any issues. He married her younger sister kanakAmba @ kamalamma, who begot a daughter who was named as sItamma. She married kuppuswami of kounDiNya gOtram. They had a son who was named as tyAgarAjan. He married guruvamma. They had a son, subrahmanya jOsier. He had a son sundaramayyar, whose wife was lalitAmbAL. They had four sons, natarAjan, rAmamUrti, subrahmanya ayyar and tyAgarAja ayyar. It is that the last person as the present caretaker of the house in which tyAgarAja was born at ThiruvArUr.
He also informed me that the vigrahams which were worshipped by tyAgarAja are with one of his relatives at tanjAvUr.

It is a beautiful song and a fine rendition indeed! The voice in the audio is of Sri. R A Phani Shayi, son of Sri. Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma.

Nandan, thanks for uploading!

Dear rasikas,

Thanks sreeni and sivaramakrishnan for your comments. Indeed the song is rendered by Prof R A Phani Shayi, son of Rallapalli sarma. Till now we had not been able to get any audio recording of Rallapalli Sarma. However, thanks to the efforts of one of our rasikas, keerti, I have been able to get a 45 min record of Rallapalli, where he has demonstrated a fw songs.

I hope to upload these for the benefit of rasikas.

it is our fortune, that with the meagre technology available, our elders have recorded at least some of the music of their times.. It is the miracle of current technologies, that we can share these treasures at close to no cost, and are able to preserve them..

I am equally delighted by this find, and look forward to the upload, and the subsequent discussion..
