Arudhara Darshanam thats what we got. Another divine performance.
She started off with Ma kelara in ravichandrika, This was followed by Kedaram, Chidambara nataraja by Muthuswamy Dikshitar. A very soothing feeling and you are transported to Chidambaram.
"oru tharam siva chidambaram endree sonnal poodume... by hearing vijayalakshmy's, neraval in the Aboghi raga krithi sabapathi ke would give you salvation. This was the intensity of expression. The Aboghi raga alapana was simply outstanding.
Only in Vijayalakshmy's concert do you get to hear rare koteeshswara iyer kritis. This time it was the Salagam kriti Ganamudam. True to here guru' Shri S. Rajam.
The Vangum Ennuku in Kambodhi seem to be hers. Very well presented with all the bhava of kambodhi engulfing the hall along with the mild camphor fragrance in KGS. Simply divine.
We were treated to another Muthuswamy Dikshithar krithi in Hemavathi. The raga alapana was really breathtaking and so was the rendering of Sri Kanthimathim.
The concert was concluded by a Bhajan Rama Govida Hari in Purya Dhanashree. One of Vijayalakshmi's speciality is her Bhajans, very lilting and authentic.
She was accompanied by
Usha Rajagopal on the violin.. She brought out the very same mood that Vijayalakshmy had created in her raga alapana. Very well done.
Melakaveri Balaji on the mirudangam blended in very well
Siva Ramakrishnan was supporting on the Ghatam
An excellent beginning to 2010.
Happy New Year to all

smt. Vijalayakshmi has a glorious voice which can scale all the octaves beutifully. Her grip on laya is effortless with breathtaking swaras not missing a beat even once. The diction in thyagaraja and sastri kritis is best I have listened. Whenever my arthritis is troubling I listen to her Thodi which will always bring relief. Nobody can sing aunthetically like her the Diksitar kritis with her great imbibing from RajamS. It is shame only the Music Academy is promoting her grand music. The other sabhas are all biased and favouring young upstarts. It is a shame that Hindu paper is giving so much space to ordinary sinigers like TMKRisna, Gayatri venkatragavan, sikkil Gurucharan and not even printing her photo in the review.

Hi Jujahuli,
Agreed that news papers or media give prominence to only a Top few musicians and give more ( or repeated) coverage to them. Also agreed that Smt. Vijayalakshmi is a great musician with a very good voice. But please do not classify Smt.Gayathri Venkatraghavan or for that matter any other musician as ordinary. It takes tremendous amount of practice and dedication and lots of sacrifice to reach a stage where they are.
In fact there are many musicians like Smt.Vijayalakshmi who are not getting enough visibility due to the narrow minded thinking of major sahbas. I think rasikas should represent this in various forums to get the attention of the organizers or the media.

It is very wrong of the newspapers to exhibit such a bias. Good music and good talent fail to receive appropriate recognition because of this. Smt. Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam is one of the best examples for this. The public mind also gets inclined to only listening to those who are seen regularly in the papers. This further reduces any encouragement sabhas give artists since they are only interested in promoting large crowds and full halls.

* Rasikas should refrain from making comparisons. Let us not hinder the good relationship &mutual respect they have for each other .(In the Marghazhi utsav while singing together &solo prog she was given the deserving centrestage by the other two who are in the same slot as per current ratings)
* I find VS has not been just the type to always sing for the gallery.
* She has a unique, innovative uncompromising style with a wide spectrum of repertoire be it MD, Koti or PS.( That perhaps explains as to why she does not rest on past laurels of her popular nos/ requests .)Why she must take up such a complicated pallavi on the Alatoor day with the hall filled up with hardly a few dozens of rasikas?
* How many of us are familiar with all vivadi melas she is handling(R N S) in the process of popularising Koti kritis?
* with all her speciality in making more than atleast three GNB exclusives I can recollect during last few months I find she is not a part of the mega centenary celebration which is going to start. When I asked her about this she said she has nothing to mistake ,she also said the events are going to be there throughout the year &she may perform if given a chance to.
* For her rasikas going up in arms for her not getting enough recognition is a welcome paradigm shift in two ways in that 1.Listeners have started looking at her music seriously.2.VS , I observe,in her part has, of late started making a healthy trade off between her policy of not repeating the kritis (despite popular requests)in successive concerts ,making scholarly presentation discernible only to panditha and becoming more rasika friendly in implementing their constructive feedbacks .
*Getting popularity/recognition is something different. As Dr.VKV has observed elsewhere she has the NIDANAM (I think patience&confidence) to wait till things ripen.
We may not require a moderator to regulate our language .

"How many of us are familiar with all vivadi melas she is handling(R N S) in the process of popularising Koti kritis?"
Sir i am not trying to bring any controversy here ...but is not sanjay singing one unfamiliar or rare raga be it vivadhi or otherwise in each and every one of his concerts ? If Vijayalakshmi or other artistes sing why should this question arise ? why double standards ?

Its not about just rare ragas either. She has been making an effort to introduce many rare songs into the mainstream as well. We have equally enjoyed her renditions of well known kritis such as Saroja Dala Nethri and Sri Krishnam Bhaja Manasa. The concerts are always very balanced and have a good mix of the familiar and the relatively new. I would think that is her U.S.P.

inspite of the small audience academy is promoting her. what more you want? all other sabhas should also put her in big halls and fill only first 2 rows? if newspaper sings praises suddenly housefull will happen? read papers regularly. nitiasri, jaisri, sudha, aruna are all blasted in reviews. nobody is stopping to come. reverse will also be true for vij.sub. her music is the same in big and mini hall. go wherever she sings and enjoy.SugarCube wrote:It is very wrong of the newspapers to exhibit such a bias.
