rAdha vishwanathan-aishwaryA @swamy's hall on Jan 07th,2010
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Vocal : rAdha vishwanathan and her granddaughther aishwaryA

violin: amritha murali

mridangam : paramEshwaran

ghatam: guruprasad

1A. om namah pranavAkayah "slokham"
1B. nArayananetheh?? namO namO - ghana pancha raga nAttai to shree - purandaradAsar
2. vA vA muruga vA(Raga sketch) - begaDa - spencer venugOpAl

3. ennAgu rAma bhajana(R N S) - pantuvarAli - BR
neraval in "rAma chinuka rokata vinci prema??"
4. rave himagiri(rAga sketch) - tODi - SS

5. shree chamundEshwari (R N)- bilahari - MV
neraval in rAka nishagara sambhavanE
6. nidhichAla sukhama (R N S T) - kalyAni - T
neraval in "mamtha vandana yutha nara stuthi sukhamA"
6B. tani
* speeches were there after tani by cleveland sundaram and before the start by VK Vishwanathan

I personally have not heard smt radha or Ms in a live concert. Went there to hear till the end of tani and speech.

Few pluses:
--------------

# Smt radhA has the rAga bhavam intact and whatever she tried it came out quite well and her song selections were all weighty. Her voice had the age related crack but still her vidwat was there, no ambiguity of ragas like pantuvarAli vs poorvikalyani etc..

# Aishwarya is just studying in 9th standard, her voice was high pitched and she really sang quite well. It was more like listening to high pitch voice of yesteryears radhA when she accompanied ms ammA. Particularly the first pick of nattai to shri krithi with cittaswaras was the most impressive . God bless aishwarya , even if she makes it as 50% ms amma which itself is a stupendous achievement , it is remarkable.

# ghatam and violin were excelling significantly , the mridangist could have lifted much more it appeared not that adequate.

VKV sir in his trademark style spoke. In his own words two of them have made a big history in the 20th century "first was mahatma gandhi and the next ms subhalakshmi". He said the same words in our nageshwaran's house get together. I wish he speaks today at ragasudha, that there are three who made a big difference , the third is ganAkaladhara madurai mani iyer. ;)

I did not hear the speech of cleveland sundaram , I had few words with another aishu's father, venkatraman. There were two aishwarya's one in the stage and the other in the audience , a juxtaposed reversal of roles than the last violin concert of aishu where aishwarya was in the audience.I left when akhilandeshwari or chetashri in dwijAvanthi was just beginning.

cienu,
I have not heard the first dasar pancha ragamaliga krithi.does ms amma sing that . Also does ms amma sing this begada and bilahari.

Dear Rajesh,

MS Amma has sung this Ragamalika Krithi many times post 1980. It is said to have been jointly composed by Annamacharya and Purandaradasa. Usually sung by other musicians in Behag, this was set to tune by Kadayanallur Venkatraman in 1980. The chittswarams too were composed by him.

Begada Krithi was learnt by my mother from the late DKJ & Bilahari kriti was taught to MS and Radha by Late KVN.
Both these kritis have been sung many times in their concerts.

The father of Suryaprakash (of Sriranjani Trust) said that they were happy beyond measure that Smt Radha had agreed to perform.

A few words about what Sri VKV and Sri Cleveland Sundaram spoke.

VKV spoke before the program - he became quite emotional whle recollecting his reminiscences with MS & Radha during the 1966 & 77 tours of the US. He said that he was one among the privileged few to have witnessed the historic UN concert live along with Radha and Vijaya Rajendran (who was also present for this program).

(Incidentally the Hon PM of India Dr Manmohan Singh while releasing the book "MS & Radha - Saga of Steadfast Devotion" last year in New Delhi used the same words - He said that he was fortunate to have been part of the Indian Delegation to the UN in 1966 and to see with his own eyes the magnetism of the music of MS, as delegates representing the whole world stood to give her a standing ovation post the concert, after being mesemerised by her music.)

VKV also said that Radha's face radiates the same charm inspite of her age and many years of health related issues.

Sri Cleveland Sundaram spoke after the Tani.

He said that those who heard today's concert were truly fortunate. and that he was taken back to an era of 1950's / 60's when MS , vocally supported by Radha was accompanied by Sundaresa Iyer on violin , TKM on Mridangam , Alangudi on Ghatam and Kadayanallur on Tambura !

He said that very few musicians had the Patanthara Shuddham of MS & Radha. He particulary emphasised on the Sruthi Shudham aspect of Radha's concert and said this was a precious heirloom of the MS bani.

He recalled the days of 1977 when MS & Radha performed the benefit concert for the PIttsburgh Venkateswara Temple and said Aishwarya's accompaniment to her grandmother reminded him of Radha's strong support to her mother.

He also praised Amritha Murali, K Parameswaran and Guruprasad for their wonderful accompaniment.

This program was attented among others by Spencer Venugopal & Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar and from our rasikas group by Suryaprakash, Nick, Jeyaraj and Jayshri and Aishu Venkataraman along with her father Sri Vinod Venkataraman. Missed speaking to rajesh as he had left after the Thani.

Rajesh - Ennaganu is a Bhadrachala Ramdas composition.

The post tani song list is as follows:

Chetasri - Dwijavanti - MD
Ninane Paduve - Ugabogha - Hamsanandi
Aathana Paduve - Hamsanandi - Purandaradasa
Petra Thai - Virutham - Nadhanamkriya - Ramalinga Swamigal
Arar Asai Padar - Nadhanamkriya - Muthu Tandavar
Akhiyan , Hari Darasan ki pyasi - Behag - Surdas
Kurai Onrum Illai
Mangalam.

Cienu,
That ragamaliga no is superb, ghana pancha ratna ragas adds a very early kalai kattufying act(musicians of today please bring it up to concerts).
I was curious to know about the DKJ popularized begada and KVN popularized bilahari and I was wondering how ms amma knew that. I have not seen spencer venugOpal yet .

Rajesh/cienu
Many thanks for the descriptions and the superb pictures as well as the historical snippets about the 1966 UN concert. Surprised to learn MMSingh was there too!
In spite of her handicaps we rasikas hope Radha will return to the concert circle and pass on the MS baton to Aishvarya whenever she is ready! God bless her!

Aishwarya sang the Pantuvarali Ragam while Smt Radha sang Bilahari and Kalyani Ragams.
Neraval and Swaras in Ennaganu were shared by the Grandmother/Granddaughter duo.
Bilahari Neraval was sung excusively by Smt Radha.
In Kalyani, Aishwarya joined Smt Radha in Neraval and Swaram.
The Ugabogha and Virutam were sung by Aishwarya.

In the last photo each of them have tejas in their face, with smt radhA radiating right in the centre. THey are happy with the divine carnatic music art . BTW there was a violet pavadA chattai less than 5 year old girl , was that your 2nd daughter.
BTW I have seen navneet in many of the concerts sitting as a rasika, he sang almost all the songs but only to the ears of smt radha and aishwarya.

Great - Thanks. I have been listening to this few times right from this morning!! Awsome rendering by mother-daughter duo; great music tuned by Kadayanallur venkatraman.. Chittaswarams are indeed catchy, and i particularly liked radha mami's little cute sangathis in varali and sri - when MS amma was doing a karvai!! awsome..

rajeshnat,

Since you wanted to see the Petra Thai Virutam sung by MS Amma's disciple(s),please find below the link of Aishwarya singing the same at the Music Academy (paramparaa channel - youtube) on Dec 13th 2008.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ8WSmcIYlg

I am immensely happy that Radha mami who accompanied MS amma for more than 6 decades and absorbed each and every element of her music is back with a bang after years of health related issues, singing with the same gamut & shruthi shudham that she had years ago. I had the pleasure of seeing her sing at the Gayana Samaj on Sep 16th 2009 (MS Amma's 93rd birthday) along with Aishwarya.
Glad that Aishwarya has been trained by her grandmother and sings with the same amount of dedication giving mami excellent vocal support. May God shower his choicest blessings on the duo.

The petra thAi thanai Viruththam by Aishwarya is excellent and well sung. She just lets it out without holding anything back and it suits the viruththam so well.

Thanks that was very good. Did you notice in the exact lines "kaNgaL ninru imapippadu marandAlum ", aishwaryA just closes her eyes at that exact line, musician especially in viruththam /slOkham should get a very high emotional quotient ,so to an extent there is also a bit of visual bhAvam (thanks to youtube).

I particularly like open throated singing and AishwaryA is heading in the right direction, after few years her adolescent voice will slowly and definitely morph into more sustained pitch like :)

I must say that she has imbibed quite alot from her grandmother. It takes back to the days when mami sang viruttams during concerts with MS amma, notably the viruttam "chediyaaya valvinaigal" for the song Srinivasa Thiruvenkata in Hamsanandi.

I had not seen this clip or heard this one before (Cienu did kindly send me their singing of gAnakkuyil from that concert).
Aishwarya surprises me. Viruttam is not a piece of cake even for seasoned singers. Aishwarya pulls it off admirably. Look at Sriramkumar's face in the clip. He is surprised, is happy and is overwhelmed with memories, I think--and the grandmother's pride-filled smile!

It is very unlikely that this kriti was composed by both annamAcharyA (1408-1503) and purandaradAsar (1484-1564). Looking at what is generally known about dAsarvAL....
(At) 30 years of age, he gave away all his wealth to charity and together with his family left his house to lead the life of a wandering minstrel to proselytise religion.
So until 1514, purandaradAsar, then SrInivAsanAyak, was leading a miserly life and had tApa samskAram with vyAsarAyaru later in 1525. There is no chance that he was singing any of his dAsa sAhitya during annamAchAryAr's death in 1503.
According to Prof. Sambamoorthy,[16] Srinivasa had his formal initiation at the hands of Vyasatirtha in 1525 when he was about 40 years old, with the name Purandara Dasa bestowed on him by Satyadharma Teertha, a later occupant of the Vyasatirtha Matha (or Vyasaraya Matha).
IMHO, Kadaiyanallur Mama must have been very eager to make it a ghanarAgamAlikA and added one extra charaNam with dAsarvAL's mudrA and set it to SrI rAgam. If they really sang songs together then why is this the only one famous? I have asked Navaneet Krishnan (Smt Radha's Student) about this before. Any comments from the forum.

The quotations are from wikipedia pages of Annamacharya and Purandara Dasa

I just listened to Aishwarya sing the viruttam and the Song on Lord Shiva. It was excellent. The open throated singing and sruthi shuddham so typical of MS bani is evident from the first syllable. I can see Sri RKSK enjoying her rendering as well. My best wishes to her.

Nods of appreciation from someone stingier, perhaps. :D
