On every pradosham (twice a month) one concert is being given by various artists at Tiruvanmiyur. It is observed that good crowd gather there to listen to the singers mostly upcoming artists.

Any of our members would be attending the conert today(29/12/2009) and I have not come across any reviww by our members earlier.

The temple has good nAda surroundings.

I believe once a month the pradosham concert is held and not twice a month.

any updates on the 12/01/2010 (pradosham) concert?

I believe, only once a month a concert is being held at temple premises. Not sure, it would be an ideal place to perform, though in a temple, consindering the pradosham crowd and tamil tirumurai singining

Sorry for the late posting. Back from Mumbai only this morning.

I had been longing to visit this temple, specially for the PradhOsham concerts and it is once a month only. I happended to attend the concert and my notings are:

Date : 12/01/2010 Venue - Marundeeswarar Temple
Artists : Piranmalai V.Annasamy - Vocal (not seen/heard before)
R.Raghul -Violin
VT Srinivasan - Mrudangam (not seen/heard before)

Here are the song list by PVA.
1) GajAnanayutham - ChakravAham - Adi - Deekshidhar - Niraval at Kunjara Bhanjana + swaras
2) Naada thanum anisham - Chittaranjini - Adi - Tyagarajar
3) SaRTE villagi - PoorvikalyANi - Roopakam - GKB (R, N & swaras at naTRavam puriyum)
4a) kAdhalAy kasindhu - virutham in AbhOgi ( expanded version)
4b) SabhApathikku - AbhOgi-Roopakam-GKB (Niraval & swaras @ krupA nidhi), followed by tani.

..

After that I left the temple.

The concert organized by Kunnakudy School of Music and it was 250th PradOsham concert, commendable effort.

The concert started at 6.40 pm. Hopefully it went upto 8.30 pm.

First of all, I liked the selection of songs and the presentation. The voice of main artist was 70% melodious. The violinst was following meticulously like a shadow of the main artist.

Later, if the main artist had accommodated one SS kriti, then, it is a very balanced list/

More tamil/ GKB songs may be b'coz of sivan temple, that may be justified. It was more like hearing a concert at Tamil Isai MandRam.

ChakravAham kriti had a rare niraval and it was refreshing at that fast phase. PVA managed very nicely with swaras too, well supported by violinist.

Second song was only sung as a kriti. I expected some swaras & disappointed.

PoorvikalyANi rAgam was very good ( at panchamam PVA produced some good varieties) and niraval at a special, different place, followed by good round of swaras.

Then the pick of the day was a very long, soothing virutham in AbhOgi. It had valaji resemblence at some places, not sure though. Especially I liked the usages of OduvAr, kaNNIr malgi OduvAr, kasindhu... kAdalAy kasindu, kaNNIr malgi OduvAr and its repeats with varous combinations.

Followed by GKB's famous kriti. Niraval & swaras were interchanged between vocalist & violinst very well.
Surely, AbhOgi was ringing that evening. The responses by the violist was very good. Tani was good ( I expected more !!)

The crowd was very thin. People were busy with PradhOsham poojAs. In between OduvArs were singing tEvArams. May be the artist chose to recite a thEvAram (kAdalAy kasindhu) as a competition :D :D

I also felt that the atmosphere ( artists had no stage) though was serene, with not much of crowd and noise around, I could not actually enjoy. Different venue, the effect would be surely better.

Over all I had a different, unique experience. I could not sit thru and I had to leave for Trichy at 8 pm on that day.

I know, the review is long enough - I think it deserves, making me feel PVA needs more opportunity to perform.

2 rAgs, 3 Niravlals & as many swaras.. I could not have asked for more from a free concert that too within 1 hour 20 minutes from a new artist.

Of the team, Violinist R.Raghul was only young (looks like MC's disciple) and has a very good future ahead.

Good that R.Raghul, MC's disciple is being talked about nicely. He is an upcoming talented artist.

Good one. 'beginner' - does not look a (literal) beginner of concert review.

Thanks for that very detailed and erudite review, Beginner (very un-beginner like!). I must make it a point to attend these concerts when I visit next.

I do have a question about the stage - isn't there a proper stage in the outer prAkAram, near the temple tank. I seem to remember seeing it when I went to the temple last. These temple concerts always take me back to the ones that used to be held in the kapAliSvarar temple in Mylapore - those were blissful.

I've never been actually inside the temple, but there is a venue very near by, and on one of the mada streets close to the tank.

But you probably all knew that <Blush>
