We should take into account that someone has shared the news with the rasikas along with a few details, when The HIndu's Madras edition is yet to carry an obituary or a news item on this great maestro. Not even in today's Friday Review!

Todays Hindu chennai edition has published the news with his photograph in page 12. Yes it is really a shocking news.
I attended the Sadas on 1st jan.in music academy and saw the awards function.When he was asked to speak on behalh of the awardees he gave a short and sweet acceptance speech what we call Rathinachurukkam.
It is really so cruel snatching him suddenly from so many students and fans. May His Soul Rest in Peace.

I had the privilege to learn couple of songs from Venkataraman Master in 2009. He is an instantaneously appealing Guru.
I was very much looking forward to see Venkataraman Master this year again in Melbourne. I am unable to comprehend on what had happened in such an unexpected way.
IÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ll forever cherish Venkataraman MasterÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã‹Å“s beautiful Veena playing along with the Sahaana and Dharbar he taught me and his kind words.

Jayashree was my childhood friend. We attended high school in Trivandrum together at the Fort Girls' Mission High School. We were best of friends till she left town after her marriage to Raghu, Mr. Venkataraman's student and an accomplished violonist himself. I feel totally shocked and at a loss at the news of her sudden and sad demise. I knew her parents and entire family very well too. My sister, Vidhya learned Violin from Jayashree. I feel terrible that life got in my way and I also never attempted to keep in touch with her. Now I will never be able to tell her my story and introduce her to my family as well as meet her daughters.

If anyone out there has any pictures of Jayashree and her family or some contact information, I would appreciate it very much if you could share with me personally or on this forum. I would like to talk to Raghu or Kannan or Jayashree's sister.

Condolences to his family. I am a great fan of him and I am proud to say that I had the fortune of attending a concert of his, in Raga Sudha hall, some months ago. His 'Ema ninnE' and 'Emi jEsithEnEmi' still echo in my ears. His playing of the behAg jAvali 'sArameina mAtalentho' was the best rendition ever. I am extremely sad as I cannot hear his melodious music any more.

Naada Inbam is Organising a meeting on 24th January @ Raga Sudha Hall in memory of Veena Vidwan Sri Trivandrum Venkatraman.

Sri S V K of Naada Inbam adored the Veena Music of Sangita Kalanidhi Vidwan Sri K S Narayanaswamy. And was greatly fond of Sri Venkatraman , his eminent disciple.

As far as I know, Sri Murali of the Hindu and President of the Music cademy is to preside over the meeting.

It is in the fitness of things, as Sri Venkaraman headed the Veena Dept in the Teacher's College of Music run by the Academy and was also conferred the title of Sangita Kala Acharya this year.

On Jan 1, 2010, The Music Academy honoured Sri Venkataraman Sir with the prestigious "Sangeetha Kala AcharyaÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ recognising his contribution and achievements as a teacher of Carnatic music. We were very fortunate to attend this function and felicitate him on the stage. When we took leave from Sir on the evening of 4th January in Chennai before leaving for Melbourne, Sir was candidly discussing with us the salient features of the veena playing style that he had taught us. He advised that we should keep up the purity of that bhani he had inherited from his gurus which was further enhanced by him. This meeting seemed like a summary round-up of the ten years of our association. Little did we know that it was going to be our last face-to-face with our guru Sri Venkataraman.

It was ten years ago at the music season in Chennai during December 1999 - we had just completed a concert at the Hamsadhwani annual festival, when this gentleman came up to us and said softly ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã‹Å“ I am Veenai Venkatraman. Please come home tomorrowÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢. Thus started our guru-sishya relationship. The coaching and guidance we received also extended to all our senior students ever since Sri Venkataraman Sir first landed in Australia in July 2001. Many a trips were to follow and the music that all of us at Pichumani School of Carnatic music in Melbourne learnt from Venkataraman Sir is a precious gift we would cherish for a life time.

Sir, as we called him, has been a true inspiration and source of strength for us in all our musical endeavours. He treated us more than a sishya and was a like a father figure. He was a perfectionist and would not give up until the student got the left and right hand fingering, the gamakas, the pauses, the meetu and the entire musical phrase correct; approximation was not acceptable to him. He had this great ability to split a gamaka into multiple little oscillations and once the student got each one correctly, he would make the student assemble all of them to produce the desired result. He would also make the student play a particular sangati or a line of a song many times over so that at the end of the class, the song was fully internalised and etched in the studentÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s mind.

Over the years he had helped us formulate a teaching methodology for both vocal and veena to ensure a strong foundation is set for our students. His trips to Australia always included a stay at Perth and Sydney where he has dedicated students for both veena and vocal.

The loss of our guru has created an irreplaceable void in our lives. However we are sure he is still around to continue to shape and guide our musical pursuits.
We pray to God Almighty for bestowing peace to the departed soul.

My condlences to his family and disciples.
He was a great vidwan, great loss to the music world. He always came across as being a humble human being.
Very dissapointed to see small crowds at his carnatica concert- he lacked recognized he deserved. Its fitting that he was honoured by the academy before his passing.
Ramnath Iyer, if you do not mind i hope you can share some recordings for all of us to enjoy and cherish.

Thanks, I think this might be on the other thread from before.

Just very disapointing to see the lack of commercial or other albums avalible. Even sangeethapriya has only one all india radio concert of Trivandrum R Venkatraman.

Such a brilliant artiste. I will never in my life forget the sahana, purvikalyani and shankarabharnam i heard a few years ago. I had just went to the concert with no expectations and i got such a wonderful treat. They sindhubhairavi raga outline had the entire audience expressing spontaneous appreciation.

I hope his music can be preserved and isnt forgotten in the future.

Shri Ramnath Iyer - thanks for the upload.
I do have a question: this version of Saramaina (in Behaag) seems to sound like Hameer kalyani in places. Can you please clarify if this is correct or not. (Or is my observation not on the mark?)

ragam-talam, I am not sure which sangati sounds like Hameer Kalyani ? Sir learnt this from the Swati Tirunal academy; I think this version of the javali is very similar to what KVN used to sing as well.

You might be able to find commercial album(s) for the Venu-Veena-Violin concert(s) with Sri Ramani & Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman. I believe they did a few concerts together way back. I have heard just the one song - Swararagasudha. The veena tanam is superb.

Even I too felt, the first pallavi phrase was more like Hamir Kalyani. I thought the phrase sounded like "Enuyir Thozhi" line in the tamil song sung by Smt P. Suseela (In film Karnan, if I am not wrong). If any mistakes, kindly do correct me.

Behag and Hameerkalyani do have some similar sangathis used. Venkatraman sir is playing saramaina as sns(sara) pm(maina) that little gait is probably causing people to feel like its hameerkalyani. Disclaimer: i dont take responsibility for the accuracy of this post
