It was not the Music Academy. The chairs were not plush. There were no Bose speakers. The acoustics was barely tolerable. The sound system was second rate. The audience was not bedecked in the finest of silks. But the excellence in the music that flowed that night would have been enviously coveted by any rasika with a ear to go beyond these things. Sangeetha Swaminathan supported by Sanjeev, Poongulam Subramanian and Madipakkam Murali presented a concert that was simultaneously wonderfully lilting and immensely invigorating under the auspices of Rajavinayagar Bhaktha Mandali.

Here is the song list mostly from memory. I found it hard to stop listening long enough to make notes. Welcome any corrections.

1. ??
2. Uncommon tamizh kriti on Vinayakar, Gowlai
3. Nasikabhushani, Sree rama saraswathi, Adi, MD
4. Vazhi maraithirukkudhe, nattaikurinji, M.Chapu, GKB
5. Shanmugapriya, nee daya galguno, adi, GNB
6. Sri janaki manohara, ??, Thyagaraja [S]
8. RTP, Bindumalini, Adi chathusra + khanda nadai
Ragamalika swaras in Dwijavanthi, Sumanesaranjani, Sindhubhairavi
9. Kapi..., Kapi, Ashtapadhi [O]
10. Sonnadhai seidhida sagasama
11. Pahadi Tillana
12. Note swara
13. Pavamana

Observations

1. Sangeetha is gifted with a phenomenal voice that can hold a poignant note at a stretch and then turn around on a dime with a staccato fast brigha for incredible effect.

Aha ! That's the most refreshing beginning to a reivew in a long time.

Indeed SS is a awesome young vocalist with a terrific voice.

6. Is it Thyagaraja or Mysore Vasudevachar. If Mysore Vasudevachar it is in Mand (janaki manoharam bajeham).
"phenomenal voice that can hold a poignant note at a stretch" - you mean nadaswara pidi / bani :)

For atleast GNB's shanmughapriyA (I have heard one of sangeetha swaminathan recording it was very good) and RTP in bindhumAlini it would have been worthwhile concert to attend I guess.

But adambakkam sabhA I dont know how to get there, vazhi marithirukkuDe ;)

Smt.SS is the daughter of vidwan Karur Krishnamurthy and most of you may know that she is a disciple of Smt.SR. and in the states now.

KK was a foreman in Engine Valves Ltd.,Alandur and my brother was his colleague. He used to tell how KK will be goaded by him to sing a Hamsanandhi or Thoranapandhalile in Brindhavana Saranga whenever he used to come to Inspection dept.where my brother was a trainee. He used to tell it will be a delightful sight to see KK negotiate the contours of the ragas with a ring spanner 30x32 in his hand.

My brother went and joined a national bank and is in Pune now.But he always communicates with KK when he comes here.

I don't think it was this one. The raga seemed to be janyam of Mela 15 with pa and dha omitted. May be I am wrong about the composer or even the starting lyrics. Will try to dig more into this.

Just find your way to the Adampakkam Pillayar temple. This hall is just behind the temple. Easiest if you are on foot :)

Following up on my own post, here is a head spinning clip. Just singing the arohanam/avarohanam for this raga appears like doing a handstand and SS goes on a swara binge, octave jump and all.

I don't think this is Isamanohari. May be someone can help,

Rajesh

I haven't been there lately but there are two venues in Adambakkam. One is the Panduranga Temple (which also is a Pillayar temple by the way) and another is a different Vinayakar temple (I think Raja vinayakar or something). Both are walking distance (or enquire and fnd your way distance) from the Adambakkam Police station. Directions to Adambakkam Police Station: From Guindy/ Velachery Main Road enter Vandikkaran Salai/ Cart Track Road. Go until you reach a dead end and turn left. After turning left Keep going straight on this road - you will cross the Adambakkam bus stand and then the lake bund (you will cross a small culvert and should be able to see the lake to your left). Again when you reach a dead end turn to your right and you will find the police station some 100 meters later on your right hand side. Teh sabhs/ temples are somewhere to your left hand side.

Hope this helps and is not too confusing!
