I'm planning of learning Tamil because i don't understand the language because I'm not originally Tamil. carnatic music because i have very little knowledge in this particular area and as bharatanatyam dancer i think it's essential to at least learn the music but would like to know the advantages and disadvantages on this decision.

Admirable idea.
Advantages are many, but the main disadvantage will be the investment of time/effort/resources that is necessary. Of the two, learning/understanding music I think is critical - more so than the language. You can compensate for not knowing a particular language by using a resource person (and since compositions that bharatanATyam can be danced to are in MANY languages, one can't be expected to know all of them), but not understanding music (CM) is I think impractical, for the dance has to flow out of the music.
