Sorry for the belated post. Main reason for this is his main of Anand bharavi varNam.

What's wrong with an anandabhairavi main?! How many 5Gs can one hear?!
Many great composers such as Veenai Kuppaiyar have composed varnams almost exclusively and maining their varnams gives them their due position. That said, varnams have extremely long vowels, and are a little too small a challenge for a neraval. But that way, apart from perhaps kana kana ruchira, the pancharatnas are too fast for sensible neraval too.
The sahana alapanai had many lovely phrases and was worth the general slow development.
The padam appeared to have some structure for the first time!
latAngi was done interestingly, the neraval and swarams were very refreshing, in particular.
The Anandabhairavi alapanai again had many lovely phrases and was worthier of the main status.
Was there any mention by the organisers before the concert that it's a Thyagaraja month celebration? Or are you just making it up?
Vande Mataram was torturously slow!

krishna's version of the bharatiyar padal stops with "maruva kaadhal konden"... the poet, however, continues with "saathiram pesugiraai kannamma...." - too delicate to be mauled with chittaswaras. indeed, krishna exercised remarkable restraint when he sang this at his concert for Rasika Ranjana Sabha (Kolkata) last week.

It was a good concert. The AlApanais of sahAnA and Anandabhairavi were both very elaborate and very enjoyable filled with lots of classical phrases. The latAngi was crisp and left one longing for more of it. The accompanists were very good and provided excellent support to the main artist. The concert was overall good.
There werent (m)any fast songs in the concert. Even the krupajUcuTaku and aparAdamula were rendered a tad slower than normal, one felt. I wasnt surprised at his choice of padam/varNam for the sub-main/main as one these expects him to do such things regularly rather than the traditional format of concerts.
I particularly dont like or dislike such choices, it depends on my mood during the particular concert that makes me like/dislike such deviations from 'tradition'. On this particular day, i was expecting something of this kind and couldnt actually control my laugh at one point of time, for i was able to guess what was going to happen very correctly. as the sahana alapanai was going, i felt it would be moratOpu and with Anandabhairavi again, something was telling me it will be something different, either another padam or the varnam. and the varnam came. i felt bad for laughing (though not loud) so obviously, but couldnt help it

Many people here seem to have certain expectations of a concert and I wonder if that affects their ability to enjoy the performance.
I like to go into a concert and just listen to what the artist is going to sing rather than have ridiculous panic scales as some sort of pre-requisite of a good concert.
Was there neraval and swaram in the varnam? Was this done in 2 kalai or did he do it in madhyamakalam?

do you imply that entertainment should not aim to fulfill audience expectations? for a diverse audience the expectations would indeed be many! if they are met during the course of the performance, i'm ok with it. if they are not, i would choose not to be similarly entertained in the future. magicians use diversion - a device to manipulate / challenge audience expectations. movie buffs will concede that Alfred Hitchcock was a master in this regard!!Rasika911 wrote:

I think you have misunderstood the "panic" metric. tmk was fantastic in singing the moratopu seyyaka padam of kestragnya. star performers like tmk must sing these rare padams at least less freequently.many beautiful padams hav become obsolete .and are disappearing frm concert platform. so instead of singing the same giripai or e vasudha or even rama ika nannu,moratopu was a great choice.

I should have phrased myself differently. This was the first time I saw the mridangist reasonably active during the padam.srikant, the padams always have a structure, it is prolly that you were able to get the hang of it only now.
