A few of my (non-Indian) college friends have never heard of or heard CM and want me to send them a clip or two (audio recording or Youtube video). What clip(s), in your opinion, best demonstrate(s) the essence of CM?

Semmangudi, IMHO, is most representative recorded artiste as far as CM is concerned. You may want to go for TMK to make it more accessible to newbies

Bilahari, Not sure what's appropriate for your friends to watch.

Here are some of the videos I like to watch:

Abhishek's recent Shanumughapriya on DD to me has had the most recent impact. (Recent memory is always Extra vivid, so its my #1)

Others after that in no particular order:

Balamurali and Bhimsen's Jugalbandhi is a video I just never tire of. I like the Sanjay videos of Bhogindra Sayinam and Chalamelara, notable for the catchy kunthalavarali & Margahindolam swarams....though I think it has been removed from youtube. Another video, where Sanjay/Nagai play a song in raga thandavam. KVN's sogasuga is beautiful. MLV's muralidhara song, with Sudha Raghunathan. "Harishankar strikes again" is a video I watch I think everyday, though its not vocal. And many of the others from the user "vintageaudio54". I love to watch Shashank's Vande Mataram. TMK's swarams always provide a firecracker!

I have shared Mandolin Srinivas CD with a friend, who is quite aware of world music in general and he loved it. Then I gave him MSS' Annamacharya Krithis which too was a hit. Others he has liked are Jayanthi Kumaresh's Tillana CD and BMK's tillana CD.

Thank you, Sri VKR, Vijay, Mahesh, and Rajeeram for your suggestions. I will incorporate them. One of my friends is a Western violinist, so I initially sent him Youtube clips of TNK/MSG/Madras Quartet, and he fell in love with MSG's subramaNyEna. He has long been a fan of Ravi Shankar, and he said that there was a relatable Hindusthani element in MSG's music... I will send them vocal clips per your suggestions, but maybe not SSI right away!
