11B. shivaperumAn kripai veNdum - shuruTTi - GKB
12. brief slOkham

Vijay's concert had the usual consistency that he always gives to the audience . Vijay started with a brief slOkham in sAveri , his sedate style suits beautifully the rAgam sAveri and he delivered it very well. Over the years I have noticed vijay's top two rAgas atleast in terms of count till submain are the ragas MukhAri and dhanyAsi. He almost sings these two in many of the concerts that I attended and he prefers this combo . In fact I remember the same mukhari dhanyAsi combo that he gave in kalarasana in the last season

MukhAri had a controlled aggression with a lovely neraval and swaras, but to me the second pick of my day was his meenalOchana fantastic rendtion of the raga alApana and a very sound diction with a right sprinkle of swaras. The pick of the day was for me the jambUPathE not for the krithi but for that lovely 9 minute neraval , he brought extraordinary excellence to the neraval and the replies by RKSK was superb. Between mukhAri and and dhanyAsi there was a rare song kunjitha pAdam ninaindu (googled could not find the composer), his alapana and krithi was excellent

The filler suddasAveri was well done , the kharaharapriyA excellence was more in the first half to an extent his swaras in this major rAga were not that much to my liking, but certainly the evergreen popular krithi gelled out well with the crowd. Vijayshiva's tukkadas are generally more excellent then what he presented in this concert. I liked the Andavan darinsanamE and the the rAgamAlika arunAchala shiva arunAchala , he could have gone little more longer in viruththam but it was quick and short.

Neyveli narayanan played with a very good sense of anticipation ,and I liked him more till the first half.Tani was not his best. The violinist RKSK played very well especially his play for yamunakalyANi neraval and kharaharapriya alapana stood out tall.

Overall the concert was advertised from 06:45 to 09:15 pm, vijay wrapped up by 9 pm after few minutes of garlanding break at the end of main,to an extent that was slightly disappointing . OVerall a very good to excellent concert.

What makes a temple concert special is the unique atmosphere and the mood it sets in the minds of the audience well before the concert starts. And when the concert marks an occasion such as Sivarathri, the audience is eager and receptive to cling on to and savor every sangathi and sahityam presented. In the hands of an expert musician with a soaring voice like Vijay Siva, the experience became transcendent. Even though the concert had a number of songs, popular and rare, the mood that pervaded this part of the world that evening was four words laid bare for all those who care - "Sarva jeeva dayakara Shambho". That exquisite neraval woven using this poignant phrase captured everything that was special about our faith and the message was for all humanity for all time.

I have had the good fortune to hear Sri Vijay Siva sing jambUpatE several times. Each time, the niraval has been riveting and has left me in a deeply meditative state. sureshvv, you have perfectly described the experience of hearing him sing this song.
