All these are signs of 'aatthiram'
Of course nothing to do with 'aanthiram' :D
(not referring to what is happening at Telingana :D

2008 season @ music academy , after a lec-dem , Sri.TRS stood up to offer his comments . As he started talking , the mike was switched off and he was not audible . Everyone started shouting " mike mike mike ... "

Sri.TRS then switched on the mike and said " idhu nanmaikkA ?? illa thEEmaikkA ? "

Heard a nice pUrvikalyANi by Sikkil Gurucharan today... Just tried other facets(?!) of the rAgA...

1. If sung in a neat manner it is pure-vikalyani.. :)
2. If vocalist sings great pidis it is (uLLE)-pUr-vikalyani..
3. If alap is sober, pUrvikal-yawny... :|
4. If it is worst, poor-vikal-aaNi.. ;(
5. If sung with most number of apa&anya swarams, pUrvikalyANiyAnee... :^)

6. If you sing riding a fine horse it is 'puravi kalyani'
7. If you are not careful it can be 'pure kalyani'
8. If you ar in sacred Orissa it can be 'pUri kalyani'
9. If you are careless it can become 'puriyAtha kalyani'
10. you can certainly relish poori and kalyani

Krishna,
For someone so young, you are timeless! kaDalai mAvu chutni is classic stuff and suits your style--though CML might remind us that both pUri and chana flour chutni came to the south from the north.
VKR,
Krishna's choice might just be right on amAvAsya for some, but going along with modern times when we eat out, particularly after listening toan evening concert in the season, anything goes, even for those who observe dietary rules :)
Funny, how we cannot stop talking about food when we discuss music and when we joke around too.
Long live laughter and music--and yes, food glorious food ;)

Bhagavathar was telling a friend 'naan manamirangaillaiya enra pattai padum pothu audience ellorum azha aarambithu vittargal'.. The friend replied' praobably the audience was feeling inda pattai ippadi kolai pannugirare'
For those who don't know tamil, the translation is like this, though it may lose its charm.
Bhagavathar was telling his friend when I sang the song entreating oh ! God have you no mercy on me, the audience was in tears. The friend replied 'probably they were feeling how cruelly this song is murdered by the bhagavathar gobilalitha

Trust you are not training those felines to purr during the violin practice.
The meowing may go better with all ragas including purrvikalyani.
cheers...
Yes arasi! Food goes with music
But then music 'goes' when food goes in :D

And imagine the plight of the vidvAn who is a gourmand and is 'gros' and has trouble with his breathing and cannot muster the sound from his nAbhi!
As for season concert goers, whether the slim or hefty performers sing Ahiri or not, most nights they face a closed canteen or just crumbs to feed on :)

I'm sure chana flour was from the north. The puri could have also evolved in the south. There are reference of fried food items in sanga tamizh mAlai 4000.

My version is good for both amAvAsai and paurNami and in between. :P

Food and music reminds me of an ancedote about a mahAvidvAn (from the late 19th - early 20th cent.), used to eat some 2 dozen idlis for breakfast! I'm not sure whether it was pUchi or tiger who did it. We have spoken about this before though.

But then music 'goes' when food goes - especially delicious payasam goes in, music comes out. This is a custom in brahmin sadhyas for wedding and kovil.

(few minutes ago...) comedy in net class: dEi, when I teach you, the class becomes so divine...

"eppadi saar?"

when i ask you to sing the lesson with thALam, you lift your hands above your ear level... when I ask you to keep the leg flat, to the level of floor you always lift your knees and when I ask you to keep a pleasant face, you do it otherwise...

so, i am reminded of elephant lifting its trunk (piLLaiyAr), lifted knees - aiyappan and keeping face - AnjanEyar... :)

Read a good hilarity recently....
Vid|| S Rajam was once asked as to who he thought were the best violinists.
He said there were two... one chevuDiah (euphemism for Chowdiah who of course was not deaf) and the second kuruDiah (Dwaram who was blind) :D

UKS sir told us this. During his younger days at kumbakonam , a big shot of that area , apparently came to his house to see his father , Dr.Kasi Visvanatha Iyer.. Dr KVI then asked UKS sir to come and play in front of that big shot. After playing for about 10 mins during which the big shot nodded his head vigorously , Dr.KVI asked him " paiyyan eppdi vAsikkaran ?"

To which that fellow replied " idhellam namakku enganga puriyidhu ??

Semmu,
What the big shot said might have come out of my (small fry that I am) mouth too, as intrigued as I am by the intricacies of what all the mrudangam can 'sing'. Yet, unlike him, I can enjoy listening to all that's beyond me sometimes :)

what was this all about "After playing for about 10 mins during which the big shot nodded his head vigorously" - does this mean this big shot was loosening his neck with all the nods so he could sleep well?

Once in a temple festival a well-known Tavil vidwaan from TN was playing very vigorously and animatedly. A VIP from Kerala who attended said : " koRacchu payya vaasikkaan paRayaNam". The vidwaan felt somewhat ashamed and handed over the Tavil to the little boy attending him assuming that he was insulted comparing him to a little boy. What the VIP meant was : ask him to play a little bit slow (payya) :D
