[1] The various names of muruga have a meaning that symbolizes a different aspect of him – here are the names used in this composition: murugan (handsome one); vElan (the spear wielder); kandan* (one who has conquered his senses); kumaran (the ever youthful one); SaravaNabhavan/SaravaNan (one who was created/came into being in a thicket of Sara grass); shaNmukh(g)an/Arumug(kh)an (the six-faced one); SivabAlan (son of Siva); guhan (one who exists in the dark cavern of our ignorant souls); kaDamban (one who wears a garland of kadamba flowers); guruparan (the exemplary/supreme preceptor); kArtikEyan (one who was adopted by the 6 kRtikA maidens – kArtkai strIgaL); mayil vAhanan (one who has a peacock for a vehicle/mount)
