Dr.Subhashini Parthasarathy-Govindarajan-Mannarkoil J Balaji

Post by mridhangam »

The concert was organised by Sruthi Arts Academy at Madurai on 28th March 2010. Dr.Subhashini Parthasarathy sang the following at this concert which went on for nearly 2 hours 35 mins.

Varnam---vasanta--ninnukori---adi
gajavadana--- sriranjani--- papanasam sivan
kshirasagara----- devagandhari--- tygaraja
Parandamavati---- dharmavati(also sloka from Soundarya lahari)---- M.dikshitar
Varuvaro--- sama--- gopalakrishna bharati
Vannamadangal----- ragamalika----- divya prabandham
kappaduve---- ananda bhairavi----- tanjore quartette
sarojadalanetri----- sankarabharanam---- syama sastri
smarasundaranguni---- pharaz javali---- dharmapuri subbarayar
ninnai charanadainden----- sumanesa ranjani----- subramanya bharati
theruvil varano----- khamas---- muthu tandavar
viruttam------------- murugane
followed by pazhani nindra---- kapi----- periaswami thooran.

She has a very pleasing voice and she produced some very nice and enjoyable brinda-muktha Pidis ...
The audience turnout was fairly good and the concert was organised at TVS Lakshmi Higher Secondary School, Palanganatham, TVS Nagar, Madurai.

Shri.Govindarajan on the violin supported the main artiste very well and on his turns he excelled very well.

Balaji,
Thank you for the review. I haven' heard of her before. Has DR. Subhashini a doctorate in music or is she a medical doctor?
I like the way you space each line in the list. Easy to read, it seems.
The venue was pazhangA nattam (as I know it from ages ago).

Subhashini is a scholar and a mature artiste who has a great variety of repertoire. This list indeed is proof of that.
Was there no tani?
arasi! I guess she has a doctorate in Music...

Ah...pazhangaanattam - where for four years I would change buses to go to college. And miss the first hour of class on 2 out of 5 days in the week or sheepishly walk in a good 20 minutes late if the Prof was a friendly one...those were the days!

Has DR. Subhashini a doctorate in music or is she a medical doctor?

[quote]

Dr. Subhashini Parthasarathy has a Ph D in Music. I believe her thesis was on padams and their development in Tamil and Telugu countries.

Her mother Nirmala Sundararajan has her Ph D in Music too. She trained for a long time under the legendary Brinda.

Together, they present lec-dems on padams during the December season. One can hear more than a dozen padams in the space of an hour or so.

Very scholarly and of course very much under-estimated by the crowd that wants to hear abhangs and bhajans. And also ignored by those who pontificate on this forum about how we are losing padams!

Thanks, CML and Harimau for educating me. Shows how much more ignorant I am than I think I am! Two names I ought to have paid attention to, but haven't. Hope I get a chance to listen to them this season.
Sridhar,
As someone who knew Madurai, I can't forget pazhangA nattam and the way I used to wonder how the name came about. nattam being a village, was it pazhangAla nattam or puzhangA nattam or something else!
