a beautiful bhajan. Lyrics are available in gujarati, hopefully you'll find someone to transliterate. If not, I'll give it a try, give me some time. Gujarati has many common words with Hindi.

Keerthi,
You know gujaAti too! You have deep knowledge in many things--is it one of them, or is it just that you are conversant in gujarAti?

i spent an unforgettable three years in a fairytale town in Gujarat, where you got the most divine mangoes, from february to october; and had mango preserves for the remaining months!

As a schoolgoer, I picked up the language, narsinh mehta's poetry, and several friendships, which still endure.

krishnaa,
It is nice to see that you learnt gujarati to learn music (srinathji bhajans). I learnt tamizh mostly from Rangaramanuja Ayyangar (his notations)and AndaL; and telugu mostly from Mancala jagannatha rao (ditto) and of course from tyagaraja!

Keerthi, very nice to read about your knowledge on language... i am also trying to learn tamizh and kannada, but i need help... as for telugu, i can understand Annamacharya's sahityam very well, though i may not be as conversant with the language as yet...

VKR, i will start a new topic with srinathji bhajans... hope the rasikas will enjoy them!

Must be Valsad/Bulsar - the home of former PM Moraji Desai -- a town whose economy is driven by Haafus/Alphonso mangoes for most of the year. Idyllic indeed!

Here's a unique video of a fond winter specialty of the Valsad/Surat region - authentic Umbadiyu - totally rustic, in an earthen pot packed with ratalu, papdi and herbs, a couple of papdis offered to Agni Deva as the inverted pot is left to bake (yes, baked, dum-pukht style - NO water!) with its contents, deep inside a fire-pit in the wilderness. Umbadiyu is a variant, a village cousin if you like, of an all-time favorite dish of mine, Undhiyu. Can imagine the end product to be a very healthy yummy version, veggies stew-baked in their own juices, cooked a la tagine/tajine way. Morocco and Gujarat are not that far apart, really. This rustic fare beats what is showcased on Grammathu Virundhu any day, although Paravai Muniyamma can hold her own with several nAttu samaiyal revelations like chembarathi poo dosai/hibiscus dosai made on earthenware uruli and similar stuff up her apron sleeve.

And now a description from a blogsite.......Enjoy!

"....The umbadiyu is a darker, smoky cousin of undhiyu. Made with wild black papdi from village Bhata, along with yam, sweet potato, brinjal, it is marinated with ginger and chilli paste then baked in a clay pot which is sealed with aromatic leaves of Kaler and Camboi.

This pot is buried in a hole in the ground, covered with hay and cow dung cakes and burnt for about 40 minutes; a small portion of this delicacy is put in an earthen kullad at the mouth of the matka to check when it’s done. This sampler is fondly called a ‘daakan' [witch], Umbadiyu is served with green chutney and buttermilk......"
