Vidwan R S Kesha Murthy (1903 -1982) was one more eminent musician from the celebrated Rudrapatna lineage. His forefathers were known for their vedic scholarship and veena playing. After initial training from his uncle
Veena Venkataramanayya, nineteen (19) year old Keshavamurthy moved to Mysore and trained under Bhakshi Subbanna (Veena Subbanna), and became his most recognized disciple.

He is credited with developing the Gayathri Veena which has 24 strings.

In his earlier days, Keshava Murthy had performed in northern India as well. Veena Subbanna, in his final days, gifted his most favourite disciple with his highly ornate Veena and blessed him.

Vidwan Keshava Murthy had earned laurels from many sabhas with titles such as Vainika Praveena and Ganakala Ratna.

His sons R K Srinivasa Murthy and R K Surya Narayana have carried on the family legacy and earned reputation. His other sons, R K Padmanabha (not to be mistaken with the other well recognized vocalist), R K Raghavan and R K Prakash are all performing artistes carrying on the veena tradition.
Vidwan H S Krishna Murthy, a well respected teacher in Hanumanta Nagar, Bangalore was another disciple of Sri Keshava Murthy.

I have heard that Vidwan R K Prakash in Bangalore has some recording of Sri. Keshava Murthy's renditions on a tape. It would be a valuable effort to contact Sri. Prakash to get that music and get it digitized and published to the rasikas.

Sreeni Rajarao- "His sons R K Srinivasa Murthy and R K Surya Narayana have carried on the family legacy and earned reputation."

Srinivasa Murthy is the eldest among his sons is it not ?

RK Surya Narayana is no more, any news abt. the former ??

In Karnataka, Sankethi's have kept the family legacy.

Vid RK Venkatarama Shastry & His brothers . Vid. RK Srikantan tops the list. They are also from Rudrapatnam. Rudrapatnam Brothers & RS Ramakanth continue the tradition.

I was delighted to stumble upon this video recording of Sri. R S Keshava Murthy on YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MCHWzPs ... re=related

I would guess this recording is from the 1970s (could be 1960s). It is most likely his sons performing along with him in this video. I know it is not Sri. R K Srinivasamurthy or Sri. R K Suryanarayana seen in this video. It is perhaps his other sons R K Prakash, R K Padmanabha (not to be mistaken with the vocalist), R K Raghavan who are in this video.

I will try to get more information on this recording and write again.

Thank you for that rare recording. The information about the accompanists is right there under the youtube screen:
Vainika Praveena Asthana Vidwan Sri R.S.KeshavaMurthy is rendering the Sri Thyagaraja's kriti Mokshamugalada in raga Saramati with his sons.
R.K.Raghavan on Veena,
R.K.Chandrashekhar on Violin,
R.K.Prakash on Veena,
R.K.PrasannaKumar on Mridangam,
R.K.Padmanabha on Veena.

Perhaps his sons have more video recordings of this amazing maestro. If we can see them on youtube it would be a real education, to watch the unique fingering technique that enabled him to achieve fantastic speeds.

Notice also the elegant formal bandh-gala sported by the sons playing the veena. The Mysore vidwans always maintained some formality in their dress. Doreswamy Iyengar would always be in the kacche-panche (panchkaccha veshti) with a neat jubba. Perhaps the palace formal tradition continued with the senior vidwans?

This is at Swami Ganapathy Satchidananda's ashram, I think - they showed a brief clip of the swamiji enjoying the music.
