Nagarajan,
Your humor sparkles (diamond). If only rasikAs--even the tamizh speaking ones :) whole-'heart'edly put their dia'mi(o)nd's to learning more tamizh, they will appreciate your humor even more--you, the one with cle(o)ver words of spee(a)d(e) too ;) .

தென்னவன் மனை ஈந்து தன் பால் கொண்டான் - ஈறோட்டு
மன்னவன் மாநகரின் பெருமை கண்டான்
(இச்)சின்னவன் அது கேட்டு உவகை கொண்டான்

Lord Siva (munnavan) went to Madurai to seek a bride (manai).
King PaaNDiyan (thennavan) gave his daughter to him and kept him there (permanently)
(Our) Erode king visited that glorious city
Hearing that this cmlover (chinnavan) became very happy.

The reason for the happiness is because our Erode is ever blessed by Lord Somasundara and mother Meenakshi!

In a perfortmance , a bhagavathar delighted the audience by singing an elaborate sankarabaranam raaga, the kriti 'ethuta nillachite' with , the apt neravalsand swaraprastaram for nearly an hour. the crowd was mesmerised and clapped merrily. Suddenly a gentleman from the crowd stood up and asked him to sing sankarabaranam. The bhagavathar was perplexed and said ANNA ithanai neram nan athaithane padinen(i sang that only so long.) . the gentleman replied' no i want you to sing the film song 'sankarabaranamu by SPB.. This is language based and somewhat macabre :D

A group of Kerala students visiting chennai stayed at a VIP's house.
The enthusiastic VIP showed them a room and said:
" onga Ur vidvaan intha roomle thaan thUnginaaar.."
The leader of the party translated it to his boys as:
" kETTO! nammuDE naaTTU vidvaan E muRiyilANe thUngi maricchu" ennA paRayunnathu...
The VIP suspected a rat and asked hhim in english what he said..
The fellow repeated " I said that this is the room our vidvaan hanged himself" ..
VIP ... speechless :D

Let us have some more humours arising form such language quirks....

if shows i am here - accompany-meant

corporate shows - a'company'meant

vigour and spicy playing - accompani-mint

apaswaram and out of rhythm -

Once, Shri T.K.Murthy mama was in a hurry to reach academy. He was residing in Mylapore then. B.Sivaraman looked for an auto and the the driver asked Rs.30 for a distance worth Rs.15. Murthy mama was not happy, "ennadaa idhu, double-aa kEkkarAn".

When the auto reached the signal near Nilgiri's, a traffic policeman stopped the auto for the driver was not wearing uniform and charged Rs.120!! Mama said in a louder vioce: into(x) four!! :D

Another Murthy Mama joke personally narrated by him.

Once he wanted to go from the Mylapore Bus Stop(Opposite to the Tank) to Indiranagar.(No performance involved)It was slightly drizzling--he hailed an Auto--the driver demanded Rs.60(usual fare I believe was Rs.30 @that time).TKM asked WHY? The driver replied it was raining(just drizzling)- TKM asked him what would be the normal fare and he said Rs. 30. TKM got into the Auto, sat and told the Driver to wait till the rain stops as he was in no hurry. Even the Auto driver laughed @ TKM's resourcefulness.

TKM jokes and imitations of Vidwans from Naina Pillai to the present day musicians, would fill volumes.

Anybody visiting Chennai should visit him(Madipakkam) and hear his reminiscences. He is as sharp @ 87 as he was when younger!! Chittu as he was affectionately called by all the musicians of his times--MS Mami would not stop laughing once TKM starts .
narrating his jokes. He was the classic court jester amongst musicians and had the "license" to make fun of anybody no matter how much Senior they were.

One of my wishes when I visit Chennai--hopefully in Nov/Dec--would be to visit him and hear/refresh stories(disclosure: my brother learnt under him and played a couple of double Mridangam concerts with him.)

Once in December in the MA outside the concert hall TKM was wandering around leisurely. I saw him and after the usual pranams, congratulated him on getting a Doctorate from some instiitution(I do not remember which one) . He said in Tamil--a rough translation would be:
What can I do!! They were passing the doctorates around like Sundal-I did not want to be left behind so I stuck my neck and hands out and helped myself to a Doctorate..

As you know his imitation of other artists is also legendary! The one person he said he would not subject to his "mimicry" was MMI. He said he had such enormous respect for MMI as a person he just could not bring himself to do it......VKV

Puzzled, I asked, why sir...!!

"mazha peyyaRadhE, adhAn..." :)

Remembered this conversation after thursday's class at music academy. Coming to a conclusion that the showers would not stop, I decided to enjoy the bike ride on a rainy night! I saw a bunch of rasikas at the steps of music academy mini hall, waiting for the rain to stop.

"nagaraj... soukhiyamaa... enna ippadi mazhailayE keLambeettEl...:)" asked one mama.

"nallAr oruvar uLarEl avar poruttu ellArkkum peyyum mazhai-nnu solleerukkE, yArAnum oru nallavarAvadhu andha gouravaththa receive paNNeeNdA dhAne!" :)

aravuk karasarE (king of the snakes)!
tamizh is a rich old language. You are a rich young poet. To translate the nuances of both the language and the writer is not easy. Anyway, CML has given the meaning.
The key word is 'uLar' (are there). If there are good people on earth, it would rain (for the purpose of saving a harvest and feeding the people). With such good humans around, the rain can even be commanded. SuddhAnanda Bharati's 'taruNa mA mazhai', timely rain (in his song aruL purivAi karuNaik kaDalE) comes to mind.
uLarEl=if there are; uLaRal=the act of spouting nonsense. A mellinam vallinam difference in the ra, Ra. So, if one is filled with nallavai (goodness), it cancels out one's uLarRal (mindless spouting) ;)
Nagaraj! How I wish I could go on about the multiple meanings in your hilarities! Tough for me, indeed! Still, a timely (taruNa) post from you

As mentioned above uLar (உளர்) meaning "exist" is coupled with the suffix "El" to get uLarEl (உளரேல்) to give the meaning "if he is there". But uLaRu (உளறு) "speak nonsense" is the root verb. The noun form is uLaRal (உளறல்) meaning "speech or talk without any sense" . While the humor has been going on for ages regarding "uLaREl", (உளறேல்) there is no such Thamizh word ,

SEkkizhAr while describing nandanAr writes, "oppilavar nandanAr ena oruvar uLar AnAr" (there was one peerless person by name nandanAr). It is a great one-liner in the stanza which describes nandanAr (in the trashy slum environs). He could have written "ena oruvar irundArE" but that is what might come to anyone. SekkizhAr was a great poet. He had to choose some extraordinary word in that context,

With all due respects to your scholarship may I point out that this is a Hilarity Thread where
all sorts of liinguistic violations take place (and are permitted) including serious grammatic
violations! if we stick to strict grammar and literary usages then 'fun' (pun as well!)
goes out the window!
