In this lovely composition, Sri Kalki pays homage to Sri Bharati as THE MAN who woke the people of TN from their torpid stupor and indifference to the British occupation of India and transformed them into a force for freedom.

caraNam 1
deiva tamizh nATTinilE veNNilAvE nAngaL dhIram inri pEdaiyarppOl vAzhndirundOm
Edum sheivadariyAdirunda pOdinilE oru singa nAdam kETTezhundOm veNNilAvE

In this divine (deiva) land (nATTilE) of the tamizhs, Oh beautiful, white moon (veNNilAvE), we (nAngaL) lived/existed (vAzhdirundOm) as (pOl) ignorant simpletons (pEdaiyar) [1], without (inri) valor (dhIram). In this state/time (pOdinilE) of helplessness when we did not know (ariyAdirunda) what (Edum) to do (Seivadu), we heard (kETTu) the roar (nAdam) of a (oru) lion (singa) and came alive/rose-up (ezhundOm) all at once.

caraNam 2
iruL aDainda nADidenru evarO shonnAr anda izivum oru perumai enru eNNi vAzhndOm
nalla arivoLiyAl iruL aghaTra oruvar vandAr idai amara nADenr-arindOm veNNilAvE

Some foolish person (evarO) declared (SonnAr) that (enru) this (idu) land of ours was a land (nADu) steeped (aDainda) in darkness (iruL), and we lived on (vAzhdOm) vacuously considering (eNNi) that (anda) insult/disgrace (izhivum) as a (oru) sentiment to be proud of (perumai). BUT, when one man (oruvar) came along (vandAr) and dispelled (agaTRa) the darkness/gloom (iruL) with the brilliance (oLiyAl) of his blazing intellect (nalla arivu), we realized (arindOm) that (enru) this (idai) was not the land of ruined men, but the land (nADu) of the gods (amarar).

[1] pEdai - can also mean a woman, but I think the poet meant this...

The rest to follow...

caraNam 3
gangai enap-pongi varum taN tamizhinil inba kavitai pala punaindaLittAr veNNilAvE
veTri sangam Udi murasaraindu ezhuga enrAr inda dharaNiyil namakku nigar illai enrAr

Utilizing the cool (taN) [2] language of tamizh (tamizhilE) that comes (varum) gushing (pongi) out like (ena) the ganges (gangai), he composed (punaindu) several (pala) happy (inba) poems (kavidai) and gave (aLittAr) them to us for inspiration. He made us awaken (ezhuga enrAr) by blowing (Udi) the conch (Sangam) of victory (veTRi), and by pummeling (araindu) the drums (muraSu) [3], and telling us/proving to us (enrAr) that there is no one (illai) who is our (namakku) equal (nigar) on this (inda) earth (dharaNiyil).

caraNam 4
4: kavi arasar bhAratiyin kavitai inbam undan kadiroLiyil kANbadenna veNNilAvE inda
bhuviyil nIyum tamizhan enna piranduNdO avar padumaik-kavi madhu arundi magizhndaduNDO

Can one appreciate (kANbadenna) the joy (inbam) that the poems (kavidai) of the king (arasar) of poets (kavi), bhArati, bring in your (undan) moonbeams/moonlight (kadiroLiyil), oh moon? Have you (nIyum), my dear moon, ever had the honor of being born (pirandaduNDO) on this (inda) earth (bhuviyil) as a citizen of tamizhnADu (tamizhan), and have you had the fortune to revel (magizhndaduNDO) in the intoxicating buzz (madhu) created by imbibing (arundi) his (avar) modern/revolutionary (pudumai) poetry (kavi)?

[2] Translated contextually
[3] Probably refers to the famous 'veTRi eTTu dikkum eTTa koTTu muraSE'...

Smt. MSS' rendering of this composition reaches a crescendo in the final parts of the last caraNam - truly creating a rousing buzz that is worthy of both bhArati's poetry, and Sri Kalki's homage - I never tire of listening to it.

I think MS sings the whole song in Desh and not as a ragamaalikai...

Ravi,
'evarO sonnAr' can also mean: who said that it was so?
AmAm, yArO sonnArAm, nAmum adai nambugiROmAm kind of expression.

taNDamizh (taN+tamizh) can also mean iniya (sweet) tamizh.
