Re: Lyrics please - aDiyEnai kAdaruLvAi - Dandapani Desikar
S-P - I have not had a chance to listen to the song, but shouldn't it be 'kAttaruLvAi'? I don't think kAdaruLvAi could mean 'lend me your ear'....

Here is an attempt at tracing the lyrics from the video:
adiyEnai kAtharuLvai angarkkaNNiyE
adiyAr uLLathinil akalAthu iruppavaLE
AlavAi uRai aNNal anbil niRayAdozhu (?)
adiyEnai ======
The last line is not clearly audible. Corrections welcome.

aDiyEnaik kAttaruLvAy angayaRkaNNi
aDiyAr uLLattinilE agalAdiruppavaLE
AlavAy uRai aNNal anbil piriyAdoru (?) angayaRkaNNi
Sanjay swallowed the last word . I just guessed the word "piriyAdoru" since the previous word is "anbil"

Great, Lakshman.
The song is full of meaning and with gentle flow.
One letter "i" is missing in: pOrkizhiyat ---> poRkizhiyait
"anbiRkiniyavaLE" fits in very well as it should be. Sanjay made a slight mess when he sang that part.
There is a technical fault in the song. Just like the court poet nakkIrar pointed out in that song recited by darumi in tiruviLaiyADal episode, there is a poruL kuRRam in this song by MDD. First of all it is Lord Shiva who enabled darumi to get the purse of gold coins from the king by giving him the poem and not angayaRkaNNi. Second, darumi did not get the purse in the end because the episode turned into a duel between lord Shiva and nakkIrar with the result lord Shiva punished nakkIrar by incinerating him. Poor darumi went home empty-handed.

Something is amiss here, the account seems to defy logic -
According to the above narrative :
......there's a court poet 'nakkIrar' - a king - 'darumi' - and Lord Shiva.
.....Court poet, 'nakirar' points out some flaws in the song presumably sung by darumi
.....Darumi was to get a gold purse from the king, which he did NOT get.
.....Shiva had a duel with 'nakkIrar' - the court poet ? Why?

Are you doubting the story or are you asking for a clarification?
"Something is amiss here, the account seems to defy logic" ---it casts a doubt.
If you know the story in full there is no need to make this remark.
If you don't know the story, here is the crux.
The king wanted to know the source of the fragrance in the hair of his queen. He announced a purse for anybody who gives an explanation. darumi was a small time temple gofer. He was wishing/praying for that purse. Lord Shiva appeared and gave him a palm leaf with the poem and asked him to recite it in the court. The poem suggested that the bee which knows about all fragrances has not seen the one that emanated from the hair of the queen thereby suggesting the fragrance was endemic to the hair. When he read it, the king appeared to agree but nakkIrar took exception saying the poem has a blemish. darumi went away and "cursed" the lord for making a fool of him. But the lord took him to the court and challenged nakkIrar as to what the blemish was. naKKIrar said the hair of women does not have natural fragrance and what was emanating was due to what was applied while bathing. Lord Shiva got angry and asked him if that was true of umA (his favorite deity). nakkIrar said "yes". Then Shiva opened his third eye and incinerated nakkIrar. In the end nakkIrar was brought back to life. Shiva said he was testing the court poet.
The story emphasizes the integrity of nakkIrar that he would not compromise his scholarship to be subservient to anybody--even the Lord. In the end darumi did NOT get his purse (unless the king chased him and gave it to him!!!!)

Can someone post a full translation.
Fuller version of the story appreciated. So even with the king agreeing to the (loftier) notion of fragrance endemic to the hair - emanating from the hair itself, he did not part with the purse simply because his court-poet thought otherwise. The court-poet's idea of the source of the fragrance was a mundane one! - and the king now went along with this ordinary explantion for his "solve the mystery" question. Strange. More strange is that Lord Siva went to the court and argued with the court-poet on this matter. Then, piqued with the court-poet's response that his own Uma's hair owed its fragrance to external things applied, the Lord destroyed the court-poet. Defies logic.

S-P:
I don't understand YOUR logic.
Are you trying to rationalize religion? Either you believe the story or you don't. Nobody is forcing you to believe. The first precept in religion is belief. If you start questioning the belief you don't belong there, period.

Just like you, or anyone else, I sure can belong here, with belief or disbelief. Thanks anyway.mahakavi wrote:S-P:

You are misquoting me. I didn't say "here". I said "there". "there" means the religion. If somebody does not believe in religion (i.e., one who starts questioning the logic of religion) and its concepts they don't belong there. That was my point.
I did not say you do not belong in this forum. Don't misread my post.
