Accompanied by V V Ravi - Violin ,and Vellore Ramabadhran - Mridangam .The sabha that
organized was Rasika Ranjani Bhaktha SamAjam.
1. seethamma MAyamma(RS,N,S)- vasanta - ThyagarAja
2. cinna nADe nA - kalAnidhi - ThyagarAja
3. needumurthini(R,S) - nAttaiKurinji - Pallavi Gopala Iyer
4. banTureeti - hamsanAdam - ThyagarAja
5. shree varalakshmi namastubhyam (R)- shreerAgam- Dikshitar
6. ManavyaaLagincaraa(S) -naLinakaanti - ThyagarAja
7. mOhana rAmA (R N S T) - mOhanam - ThyagarAja
8. KAna VendAmo - shreeranjani - pApanAsam Sivan
9. viruttam "petra thAythanai" - Desh + madhukowns + sindhubhairavi + bhimplas
10. maname kanamum - bhimplas - ??
11. vishweshwaru darisana - sindhubhairavi -Swati Tirunal
12. Maaye - sudda tarangini - dikshitar
13 . pavamana followed by slokham in madhyamAvati + suruTTi
I went to hear SuryaprakAsh after a 6 month long gap .Gave a great start with a lovely vasanta , surprising me completely with a neraval in vasanta which I have never heard in my life (Has anyone heard vasanta neraval???). Swarams in vasantha were very good , however the next kalAnidhi did dampen the quality that was created before.
A good nAttaikurinji and I heard a rare needumurthini(IIRC, only heard thru MDR recording) with the distinct prayoga nicely sung. The banTureeti had a quick finish (since I expected the sarvalaghu swaras). Shree rAgam was delivered quite well . Till now the concert was just good , and there were not much traces of gAnakaladhara MMI.
The sarvalaghu downpour in naLinakAnti and an extremely good manodharmam in mOhanam were the best . Excellent neraval and a very different sarvalaghu pattern of mOhanam swaram. All
musicians have made it a point to sing KAna vendAmo after main too frequently.
Viruttam was classic in Desh + madhukowns , average in bhimplas and quite good in sindhubhairavi . I am not a big fan of maname kanamum as it is too filmish to me. Like the maaye a lot.
Ravi's violin nAdham was scratchy and little too slow in kalApramAnam. Shri VR's mridangam was not good at all(sreerAgam and nattaikurinji krithi's play was very poor) . Tani was pleasing to mylapore crowd as it was only for 4 and 1/2 minutes.A very good and memorable mOhana RAma , and overall a good concert

Rajeshnat,
It is always nice to read reviews from the Chennai crew.
Both Suryaprakash and VR have been in North America for the Cleveland Festival. Suryaprakash had a long concert tour here.

If you want to know what tarangiNi originally sounded like, you ought not to listen to the recordings you mentioned.vasanthakokilam wrote:'mAyE' does not sound like caarukEshi, atleast not the versions of NCV and MMI that I have heard.

Mind you, the original tarangiNi is beautiful in its own right. Full of pathos.
To give you a feel of the original, here is a recording.

Rajeshnat, nice review!
I have listened to a TMK concert in 2002, Dayton where he sang the most mindlblowing Vasantha - Hariharaputram replete with alapana and swarams. That concert also had a detailed Dhanyasi renedition too, with neraval and swarams...I am sure Bala747 would have hailed that concert

There is a very nice recording of original taraMgiNi on Veena by Prof R Vishveswaran (commercial release)drshrikaanth wrote:If you want to know what tarangiNi originally sounded like, you ought not to listen to the recordings you mentioned.vasanthakokilam wrote:'mAyE' does not sound like caarukEshi, atleast not the versions of NCV and MMI that I have heard. The "popular" version of tarangiNi has been altered beyond recognition. It is not simply a change of D1 to D2 but changes to the sancAras as well. It sound like jhunjUTi which is not helped by singing it in madhyama Sruti. Everyone blames the change on a "Contemporary" musician (Who may no more be contemporary) without actually naming him/her.
