It was a wonderful concert. The pieces chosen were interesting and it was an interesting combination of rAgams, composers, tALams. Each piece was rendered with a lot of bhavam and traditional ferver. The manOdarmam was wonderfully displayed as well. All the AlApanais were shared by the two vainikas, to be followed by the violinst. All the neraval and svarams were exchanged by the three of them.

Smt. Kalpakam Swaminathan's presentations were a class above and had many traditional phrases that were rendered with the appropriate stresses, that they demand. The kritis were all rendered with beautiful sangatis and fitting manOdarmam parts.

Smt. Janaki Srinivasan did a good job in accompanying her guru and supported her ably. Her presentations were neat. She also played a rAgamAlikA tAnam in sahAnA, aTANA and srI during the main tAnam.

Sri Gopinath followed the main artist like a shadow and did very good in his replies. Sri Kumar played with very good anticipation and in accordance to the krits. His short tani was nice as well.

A beautiful array of kritis with apt succession of ragas.
Is it not rare to have a fiddle accompaniment for a veena concert ?

Lovely list! I sometimes miss some of the "common" ragams, and, you know, non-Dikshithar kritis in Smt Kalpakam Swaminathan's concerts. Would have loved to be able to attend the concert.

kssr,
To each vainika his (or her) own! But usually KS is accompanied by rather younger violinists than Sri MR Gopinath.

ganeshkant, Smt. Kalpakam Swaminathan does prefer a fiddle accompaniment in recent times. She feels it is an extra support she gets on stage, along side her disciple and gives a few extra seconds of rest for every line of manodarmam that she plays.

In yesteryears, i m told it is not unknown for vainikas to have fiddle accompanists.

rshankar, i hadn't even heard off the darbAr kriti till Kalpakam Mami told me after the concert. indeed a treasure house that she is, not necessarily of MD kritis alone, but of Traditional Carnatic Music in totality.
