To your question "Does supply create demand or demand creates supply?" in the context of performing arts, first supply creates demand and demand arises out of popular choice for the novelty. Rasikas do not imagine the novel idea and make demand on the performer, in the first instance. The novelty attaining the popularity, entices the performer to meet the demand and to all those performers wanting to meet such demands, they choose to be controlled by the rasikas, willingly.

To your poser "where would viruttams and tillAnAs go?", the cutcheri format in CM, consists of devotional numbers at the end of the concert-a dasara pada, Thiruppugazh/Thevaram, tarangam, viruttam and other devotional number. The performer and the rasikas, having enjoyed the music arising out of the vidwath of the performer, pay obeisance to the supreme God, free from the need to show case the vidwath, but focussing on the bhakthi(with rakthi) offering only. The tillana is used to rev up the mood from sober state of mind.

thenpaanan,
The musical content highly rich in manodharma and tradition-classical excellence, determines the composition to be heavy or light. The musical content, which makes demand on both the performer and the rasikas for greater intellectual involvement and treatment and delivers maximum satisfaction, with recall pleasure, qualify as heavy composition. The compositions which have received the special attention and development by the Great Maestros, in their most imaginative and creative moments, become very rich in musical ideas. The deep insights, intricacies and scope for flight of imagination and creativity, lending weight of musical contents, become heavy.
Any worthy composition, with the strength of manodharma and sadhana of the performer, can attain the stautus of heavy composition, with rich musical content-raga-tala-bhava and deliverance of total satisfaction and becoming long lasting in nature.

Nice to heart these replies.

I also had the same question regarding the heavy/light classification of CM.

I recently came across these videos, and they make a lot of sense.

All of Prince Rama Varma's videos are great. Please watch his other videos too.

On a side note, I want to share this beautiful violin duet with all the rasikas, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsrWXkqGzbg
