Post by aarthi27981 »

hello, where can i listen to a pakka rendition of this song with the correct words? i listened to one version by unnikrishnan sir, but when i searched the lyrics on the net, the words seem quite different. i request help on this, because i need to teach a few people the correct lyrics and the tune to sing for a function.

There are word/pronunciation differences in various renditions of this Purandaradasa's song as with many of his other songs. We are separated by so many centuries from him.

One version is T.V. Sankaranarayanan's USA concert of 1980's in Sangeethapriya. See under Sri. Manjunaths's folder. http://www.sangeethamshare.org/manjunat ... _dhAsa.MP3 (You need to sign in)

Check your email.

Other versions are commercial releases: Nedunuri actually puts together lines from different stanza's and sings. Chinmaya Sisters' version is very good too.

Here is what I have got for lyrics:

pallavi
rAma mantrava japiso E manuja
Say the mantra (chant, name) of Rama, oh man.

anupallavi
A mantra ee mantra meccisi geDa bEDa
sOmasEkhara tanna bAmini gorE deega(rAma)
Avoid this mantra and that mantra, and say Somasekhara's (sOman = moon, Sikhara = head; thus "one who has the moon on his head", Siva) mantra to be happy.

caraNam
sakala vEdagaLigE sAramE iva mantra
mukti mArgakE eevE moola mantra
bhakti rasa kEdAri ummE toruvamantra
sukhanidhi purandara viTThalana mahA mantra
This mantra, Rama, is the essence (sAram) of all (sakala) the Vedas, and it is the best mantra for reaching salvation (mukti). For those with bhakti, this is the ultimate mantra. This is Purandara ViTThala's (Vishnu's) great mantra.

kulahInanAdaru kUgijapisuva mantra
sale bIdiyoLu uccaripa mantra
halavu pApangaLa hadegeDisuva mantra
sulabhadindali swarga sUregoMbuva mantra

marutAtmaja nitya smaraNe mADuva mantra
saruva RuShigaLalli sErida mantra
duritakAnanakidu dAvanala mantra
poredu vibhIShaNage paTTagaTTida mantra

jAnanidhi namma Anandatirtharu
sAnurAgadi nitya sEvipa mantra
bhAnukulAMbudhi sOmanenipa namma
dInarakShaka purandara viThalana mantra

anupallavi - A mantra I mantra meccisi keDa bEdA, sOmaSEkhara tanna bhAmini .... means 'do not patronize/practice/appreciate other (that and this) mantras and fall on evil ways/be misled, but chant the mantra that Siva taught/explained to his bhAmini (consort)' - refers to the fact that is highlighted in the vishNu saharsanAma - "ISvara uvAca - Sri rAma rAma rAma rAmEti ramE rAmE manOramE sahasara nAma tat tulyam, rAma nAma varANanE"....Siva's mantra could be interpreted as 'Siva mantra'...

Few corrections on the script :
It is " Aa mantra Ee mantra Netchi Ne Kedaa Bedaa".. (netchi meaning believe or trust).
"Kedaa Bedaa" contextually meaning here 'dont get lost' .

In the anupallavi section, referring to it as a mantra on Somashekara (Siva)
I fear is not correct. The reference here is to 'rama mantra' as told by Siva to Paravathi.
(ref Vishnusahsranamam -Eshwara Uvachu ...SriRama Ramaithi Rame.....in response
to paravathi's query of shorter or easier version ...)

In the Charanam .. mukthi margakke "Edhe"(or Idhe) and not eeVe.
Edhe means 'this' , eeVe is plural and not appropriate.

Rama mantrava japiso-Madhyamavathi-Adi-Purandara Dasa
P. Rama mantrava japiso he manuja
Anu P. Aa mantra ee mantra japisi kedalu beda
Somasekara tanna bhamige pelida mantra
Ch.1. Kula heenanadaru koogi bhajipa mantra
Jalajapani nithya japipa mantra
kalusha parvatakidu kulisa vagiha mantra
Sulabhadindali moksha soora gombuve mantra

Ch.2. Marutatmaja nithya smarane maduva mantra
Sarva rushigalalli serida mantra
Durita kaananakidu davaanala mantra
Posidu vibhishanani ge patta gattida mantra
Ch.3. Jnanadi namma ananda tirtharu
Sanuragadi nithya sevipa mantra
Bhanu kulambudi somana nama
Deena rakshka purandara vittala mantra

The orginal varnamettu is in Madhyamavathi raga, but popular version is in Jhonpuri. I like Shri TNS version and consider it as the best, I have heard till date.

I have a different version of Ch.2 and 3. from the book Purandaradasara janapriya keerthanegalu (Kannada from Ankita Pustaka) while Ch1 is the same as munirao2001's.

Ch2. snAna mounangaLige sAdhanada mantra
jnanigaLu manadi dhyAnipa mantra
hInaguNangaLa hingisuva mantra
Enembe vibhIshaNage pattagattida mantra

Ch3. sakala vedangaLige sAravenipa mantra
mukuti mArgake idE mUla mantra
bhakuti rasake batte omme tOruva mantra
sukhanidhi purandhara viTalana maha mantra

3 rd line in Ch3 does not sound okay (batte - cloth?)
